Imsa kommer fra Imssjøene, som ligger i fjellet lengst øst i Ringebu kommune, om lag 620 meter over havet. Derfra renner elva drøyt to mil sørøstover mot Østerdalen og Glomma gjennom Imsdalen, dels mellom bratte bergskrenter. Nederst i dalføret forenes Imsa med Eldåa. Fra sammenløpet mellom disse to elvene var det bare cirka tre kilometer gjennom grenda Imsroa ned til Glomma, om lag 270 meter over havet. På den siste strekningen, nedenfor Ingeborgstua, delte elva seg i to armer. Her var det store grusavsetninger i elveløpene, som førte til at elva gikk ut over sine bredder når det kom store flommer. Dette problemet nødvendiggjorde stadige elverenskingsarbeider.
Det ble fløtet tømmer fra Imssjøene og nedover. Ved utløpet av den søndre Imssjøen ble det for øvrig tidlig bygd en attholdsdam som skulle brukes til å regulere vassføringa med sikte på at fløtinga skulle bli årssikker. Uten denne dammen var det bare den nedre delen av vassdraget som var fløtbar. I elveløpet var det en mengde skjær og store steiner, som hindret tømmerets framdrift når det var lite vann og som ofte skadet stokkene også når det ble brukt damvann. Bratte, til dels steile elvebredder vanskeliggjorde fløtingsarbeidet.
Fløtinga i Imsa ble organisert i en fellesfløtingsforening i 1862. Dette innebar at «at Flødningen for Fremtiden udføres med fælleds af Fløderhuusbonden leiede Mandskaber, og at Flødningsomkostningerne reparteres paa Tømmereierne i Forhold til Tømmermængden fra det Sted, hvor Tømmeret kommer i Vasdraget». Foreningen innkasserte «damtoll», penger som skulle brukes til vedlikehold av dammen ved utløpet av Imssjøen og til sprenging av steinblokker i elveløpet som var til hinder for fløtinga. Hvor pengene skulle brukes, skulle avgjøres når grunneierne, brukerne på gardene Vestgård, Negård, Stai, Messelt og Mykleby, møttes til årsmøte. På denne tida var fløtinga i Imsa organisert i tre avdelinger, under en fløterhusbond som ble valgt av årsmøtet. Fløtingskartene fra tida omkring 1. verdenskrig antyder hele fem avdelinger. Alt i 1867 brast Imsdammen. Uten den var fløterne avhengige av regnflommer for å få ut tømmeret, så arbeidet tok tid, og dammen ble gjenoppbygd. Også Nordre og Søndre Eldåa hadde hver sin fløtingsdam.
I tiåret 1901-1910 ble det i gjennomsnitt innmeldt 69 621 tømmerstokker til fløting i Imsa årlig. Det kan tenkes at tømmer som ble fløtet i Eldåa er inkludert i tallmaterialet fram til og med 1907. Det var nemlig først i 1908 at Nordre og Søndre Eldåa fikk egne rubrikker i fløtingsstatistikken. I 1950-åra var disse vassdragene ute av statistikken igjen. I tiåret 1951-1960 ble det i gjennomsnitt innmeldt 67 781 tømmerstokker til fløting i Imsa, med 1957 som toppår. Da skulle fløterne i dette vassdraget ekspedere 104 137 stokker ned til Glomma. Det ser ut til å ha vært relativt små kvanta som ble «liggende inne» fra en sesong til den neste i Imsa. Fløtingskvantumet var fortsatt forholdsvis høyt gjennom 1960-åra, men deretter sank det raskt. 1971 var siste sesong det ble rapportert om tømmerfløting i Imsa.

Dette redskapet ble brukt til å løfte tunge steinblokker opp på muren som var under oppførelse. Helt til venstre i bildet, ved flomvollen langs elveløpet, sto det en arbeidskledd mann.
Dette fotografiet er hentet fra album 11 i samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med notatblokk, lydbandopptaker og kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten tømmertransport til vanns hadde vært. En del installasjoner i og ved elver og innsjøer måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noen eiendommer og kulturminner ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum etter at fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. Materialet ble enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert. Dette fotografiet er hentet fra album 10 i samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening.
