Osfallet ligger i elva Søndre Osa, et 17 kilometer langt vassdrag som starter ved Valmen i den nordvestre delen av Osensjøen og munner ut i elva Rena og har et samlet fall på drøyt 200 meter på denne strekningen. Hele 25, 5 meter av dette fallet var fordelt på to avsatser ved det såkalte Osfallet, om lag halvannen kilometer fra Søndre Osas utløp i Rena-vassdraget. Med henblikk på tømmerfløtinga var det bygd en løftedam og skådammer langs elvebreddene ved Osfallet, i håp om at stokkene skulle flyte forbi uten å sette seg fast. Da det tidlig på 1900-tallet begynte å bli aktuelt å utnytte energien i slike fall til industrielle formål, lanserte bygdehøvdingen Tollef Kilde et forslag om å bygge et tresliperi ved Osfallet. Forslaget fikk en blandet mottakelse, fordi det kunne true kommunesenteret Rena. Men treforedlingsindustri ville åmotingene gjerne ha. Parallelt med at det ble arbeidet for et tresliperi ved Rena oppnevnte Åmot kommune en komité som skulle arbeide for kraftutbygging i Osfallet. Tollef Kilde og Åmot kommune sikret seg størstedelen av fallrettighetene, og Osfallskomitéen engasjerte ingeniør Johan Jørgen Kinck til å skissere og kalkulere et reguleringsforslag. Man ble oppmerksom på at byggegrunnen var problematisk, og geologiprofessor Johan Herman Lie Vogt ble konsultert når det gjaldt plassering av konstruksjonene. I 1913 var man kommet så langt at entreprenør Aders Oscar Gravem ble engasjert for å bygge anlegget. Dt sto klart til bruk høsten 1914. Noenlunde samtidig var det nye tresliperiet på Rødsvoll på Rena ferdig. Våren 1916 oppsto det imidlertid en krisesituasjon. Sola strålte på dagtid, slik at snøen smeltet raskt, og om nettene regnet det. Ledelsen for kraftverket ante at dette kom til å bli en påkjenning på konstruksjonene, og arbeiderne ble satt til å skru opp botnlukene, en operasjon de ikke var helt fortrolige med, og etter hvert måtte gi opp etter hvert som risikoen for dambrudd vokste. Den 10. mai skjedde det - elva grov seg gjennom den nordre damarmen og skapte seg et helt nytt løp. Samtidig skylte den med seg store mengder sand, stein og grus, som skapte store ødeleggelser videre nedover, blant annet i kraftstasjonen. Enda mer prekært var det ved maskinistboligen, som ble liggende på ei øy mellom frådende vannmasser. Maskinisten og mora hans ble isolerte, og mora ble i tillegg fastklemt da bygningskonstruksjonene kollapset. To modige fløtere greide etter hvert å ta seg ut til dem med båt, men den eldre kvinna døde mens de hogg istykker bygningskonstruksjonene hun var fanget i. Sønnen ble reddet. Også videre nedover i vassdraget var det store skader. Fundamenteringa for brua for vegen mellom Rena og Deset ble blant annet fullstendig ødelagt. Ulykka truet hele Åmot-samfunnet. Tresliperiet og kartongfabrikken, som var etablert på en meget beskjeden aksekapital, hadde mistet sin energikilde, og ble drevet videre på sparebluss med en gammel dampkjel som drivkraft for maskinene. Det å få gjenoppbygd kraftverket ble ikke enklere av at det var dyrtid, og av at også skogbruket, som var ei hovednæringsgrein i Åmot, opplevde et krakk med påfølgende mangeårig lavkonjunktur.
Etter Osfallskatastrofen 12. mai 1916. Fotografiet er tatt mot den nye, men ødelagte kraftverksdammen, der den nordre damarmen brast to dager før dette fotografiet ble tatt. Følgen var at elva grov seg et nytt løp, samtidig som den førte med seg store mengder sand, grus og stein. Dette forårsaket store materielle skader og betydelige økonomiske tap for kraftverkseierne, innbyggerne i Åmot kommune og den nye hjørnesteinsbedriften Rena Kartonfabrikk.

I likhet med de fleste andre opptakene i disse albumene er bildet antakelig tatt av en av organisasjonens funksjonærer i forbindelse med befaringsreiser langs fløtingsvassdragene.
