- Det er ikkje sikkert stadfesta når den eldste kyrkja i Odda vart reist, men mykje tyder på at det kan ha vore kring 1050. Dette var ei enkel kyrkje, bygd som ei stavkyrkje. Etter dette - kring 1270 - kom den kyrkja vi i dag kjenner som den gamle steinkyrkja, og som kapellet på Berjaflot er ein kopi av. Segna seier at det var skotske murarar som bygde kyrkjene. Denne kyrkja vart for trong til det stigande folketalet. I 1851 kom den nye kyrkjelova som påbaud at kyrkjene skulle ha plass til 3/10 av folketalet i sokna. Folketalet i Odda sokn var i 1865 1596. No byrja ein å diskutera om ein skulle byggja ei ny kyrkje i staden for å utvida den gamle. Dei som ville byggje ny kyrkje vann med knapt fleirtal, og dei ville byggja den nye kyrkja på den gamle tomta. Grunna størrelsen vart det likevel avgjerde at den nye kyrkja skulle byggjast sør for kyrkjegardsmuren. Vilkåret var at den gamle kyrkja skulle rivast før den nye vart bygd, slik at ein kunne nytta stein frå den gamle til den nye. Den gamle kyrkja vart reven på dugnadsarbeid ein laurdag i april 1870. Mønsteret for den nye kyrkja fann ein i Øystese, ei langskipskyrkje av reisverk eller tømmer. Arkitekt C.Erichsen, som leverte teikningar, som var ein kopi av kyrkje i Øystese, men med fleire sitteplassar. Den 17. mai 1870 tok arbeidet på grunnmuren til, og den 4. november same året vart kyrkja vigsla.
