Denne maskinen var britiske Sinclairs oppfølger til suksessen ZX Spectrum, rettet mot et mer avansert marked - profesjonelle og avanserte amatører. Den hadde et fullt tastatur, en rask Motorola 68008 prosessor og erstattet store floppydisker med to kompakte mikro-kassett-stasjoner for lagring og programvare. Den hadde BBC standard TV- og tele-tilkoplinger, med fargeskjerm - 256 (8 samtidige) farger.
Industridesigner Rick Dickinson, som alt hadde designet ZX81 og ZX Spectrum, sto for formgivingen også av QL. Maskinen ble solgt inn som en "neste generasjons" datamaskin, og fikk derfor navnet QL for Quantum Leap. Den ble imidlertid lansert bare en måned Apple Macintosh, som satte en helt annen snatdard for brukergrensensnitt og design. Hastverket med å lansere før Apple medførte også en del vansker både med produksjonstid og kvalitet, og QL tapte hardt i konkurransen. Produksjon opphørte allerede i 1985.
I Norge var det Viking Data som forhandlet Sinclair. QL ble solgt med en grunnpakke med kontorprogrammer - tekstbehandling, database, regneark og presentasjonsgrafikk - til ca. 9000 kroner for norsk versjon - 7000 kr. for engelsk versjon. Det tilsvarer ca. kr. 18000 / 25000 i 2020.
