«Kranglete begynnelse på den siste Osensjøfløtinga.
Kranglete har det gått med fløtinga i Osensjøen hittil, stort sett på grunn av ekstremt lav vannstand. På sandbankene i nordre ende av sjøen ligger det nå 16 000 kubikkmeter tømmer. Tømmer som må bæres ut i sjøen av hjullastere. Vanligvis er sjøen så stor at tømmeret havner rett ut i vannet når isen går, men nå ligger det altså på land.

Det dreier seg om 16 000 kubikkmeter tømmer, og det er 14 dagers arbeid for de tre hjullasterne som nå er i virksomhet, forutsatt at man slipper slike uhell som tirsdag. Da kjørte en av hjullasterne seg fast i sjøkanten. Det er Arne Nordsveen, Rune Sandberg, Per Olav Olsen og Åge Storsveen, alle fra Elverum, som kjører hjullasterne.]
Tre hjullastere er i virksomhet, og en må regne med minst to uker før alt tømmeret er båret ut i sjøen hvis det ikke kommer mye regn og sjøen stiger igjen. Tirsdag kjørte dessuten en av hjullasterne seg fast i sjøkanten, og mandag ettermiddag hadde båtmannskapet vansker med å få «Trysilknut» ut på vannet fra vinteropplagsplassen ved Sørlistøa på vestsida av Osensjøen, litt sør for Valmen.
Dessuten er det vemod over årets fløting, den siste i Osensjøen. Glåma-fløtinga nedlegges neste år, men i vår er det siste gang det fløtes i Osensjøen. Flesteparten av den 16 mann store fløtergjengen er veteraner, mange med 30-40 år bak seg som fløtere. Fløtningsformann Birger Skavern har fløtt i 45 år. De beklager alle at fløtinga nedlegges, det er vemodig at det nå er slutt. Fløterne tror neppe at tømmertransport på bil og bane blir rimeligere, men de kan forstå Borregaard som legger ned fløtinga, etter at tømmerkvantumet har minket sterkt de senere årene. Ingen av Osensjøen-fløterne lider noe særlig økonomisk ved nedleggelsen. Skavern er den eneste helårsansatte i Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. De andre har tatt fløtinga som en hyggelig og kjærkommen avveksling hver vår. De aller fleste er skogsarbeidere som har nok å gjøre i skogen.
I år er det for øvrig mer tømmer i Osensjøen enn på flere år, 16 000 kubikkmeter mot bare 10 000 kubikkmeter de siste årene. Vannstanden i sjøen er nå tre meter under topp nivå, altså er sjøen bare vel halvfull. Fløtinga går best når vannstanden er ca. en meter under toppnivå, så mannskapet håper nå på mye regn. Da kan de nok ha Osensjø-fløtinga unnagjort på 18-20 dager, som er det vanlige.»

Dette er et gammelt lensested, for her renner den om lag 6 mil lange elva Nordre Osa ut med fløtingsvirke fra nordenforliggende skogsterreng. I 1984, da dette fotografiet ble tatt, var det om lag 15 år siden det hadde gått tømmer på Nordre Osa. Osmundsand ble fortsatt brukt som velteplass for lastebiltransportert slipvirke fra omkringliggende skoger. Da våren kom og isen på innsjøen smeltet, skulle tømmeret slås ut i vannet ved hjelp av en hjullaster. Løstømmeret ble holdt samlet i strandsonen ved hjelp av ei lense som var forankret på land. Tømmer fra denne landlensa skulle etter hvert fordeles på «bommer», ringer av sammenkjedete tømmerstokker som fungerte som flytende rammer for løstømmeret når det skulle bukseres over innsjøen mot Valmen og elva Søndre Osas utløp fra Osensjøen. På dette fotografiet ser vi en av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings varpebåter i Osen (til venstre) og ei lense på det blanke vannspeilet som antakelig skulle brukes i en ringbom.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Norges største fløtingsvassdrag, Glomma. Ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum holdt man nær kontakt med ledelsen i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening, og etablerte noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Hovedaktørene i dette prosjektet var historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen Ole-Thorstein Ljøstad. Målet var at prosjektet skulle sikre et bredt spekter av kildemateriale fra den økonomisk viktige aktiviteten Glomma-fløtinga hadde vært. Museet anså så vel faste fløtingsinnretninger, løse gjenstander, fotografisk materiale, muntlig formidlete minner og arkivalia for å være «kilder» i denne sammenhengen. Vestheim og Ljøstad hadde dessuten store ambisjoner for «samtidsdokumentasjon» de to siste fløtingssesongene. Materialet de innhentet skulle gjøres til gjenstand for vitenskapelig bearbeiding, og formidles så vel i bokform som gjennom utstillinger i museet. En del av fløtingas faste kulturminner ble overlatt til grunneierne for en symbolsk pris, og et par av lenseanleggene ble overlatt til organisasjoner som ønsket å etablere fløtingsmuseer. Det største og mest ambisiøse av disse prosjektene var knyttet til Fetsund lenser i Akershus. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum overtok fløtingssenteret Sørlistøa ved Osensjøen i Hedmark som formidlingssted knyttet til tverreelv- og innsjøfløting. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot Skogbruksmuseet fotosamlinga si, mens arkivene ble avlevert til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende ved Fetsund lenser. Der ble ordningsarbeidet startet under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim fra Skogbruksmuseet, seinere videreført av Elin Mortensen og Thomas Støvind Berg i det museet som etter hvert vokste fram ved lenseanlegget på Fetsund. Øivind Vestheims bok om Glomma-fløtinga, «Fløting gjennom århundrer», kom i 1998.
