I første halvdel av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glommavassdraget. Museumsdirektør Tore Fossum ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum tok da initiativ til noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet ville sikre et størst mulig kildemateriale knyttet til den rollen vassdraget gjennom hundrevis av år hadde spilt som transportåre for tømmer fra skogbygdene i innlandet mot tømmerbearbeidende virksomheter og eksporthavner ved kysten. Målet var i første instans å sikre et bredt utvalg av kilder til historisk kunnskap om virksomheten, deretter å bearbeide en del av disse kildene vitenskapelig i et bokprosjekt. Museet samarbeidet med Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Denne organisasjonen overlot arkivmaterialet sitt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i kontorbygget ved Fetsund lenser, der man arbeidet for å etablere et lensemuseum. Amanuensis Øivind Vestheim fra Norsk Skogmuseum startet, i samarbeid med lokale prosjektansatte, en ordnings- og katalogiseringsprosess, som etter at museumsidéen ble virkeliggjort i 1990 har vært videreført av personale fra lensemuseet. Fotosamlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening - 72 album, samt en del «løse» bilder og noe negativmateriale - ble overført til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, hvor det i første omgang ble reprofotografert og enkelt registrert. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening skulle også «rydde opp etter seg» i Glomma, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. En del installasjoner ble revet, andre ble overlatt til grunneiere som fant det interessant, og flere anlegg (blant annet Fetsund lenser og Sørlistøa ved Osensjøen i Åmot/Trysil i Hedmark) ble solgt for symbolske beløp med sikte på museumsutvikling. Museene fikk også overta en del driftsmateriell som ikke hadde nevneverdig omsetningsverdi. I 1980-åra var «samtidsdokumentasjon» et nytt og interessant begrep i museumssektoren, og for Norsk Skogbruksmuseum ble «Prosjekt Glomma» særlig organisert som et samtidsdokumentasjonsprosjekt med amanuensis Øivind Vestheim og fotograf OT Ljøstad som hovedaktører. I 1984 og 1985 reiste de mye langs vassdraget for å intervjue fløtere, ta fotografier og gjøre filmopptak, samt notere seg prosedyrer de mente karakteriserte fløtinga. Ljøstad fikk også anledning til å ta en del oversiktsbilder fra småfly, både i Glommavassdraget og Trysilvassdraget. Dette fotografiet ble tatt i Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings båtbyggeri på Flisa, der museumsfotografen fikk anledning til å dokumentere hvordan et fløterbåt - en såkalt «Flisa-båt» - ble bygd. Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings båtbyggeri på Flisa skal ha vært i drift fra omkring1930 til det ble klart at fløtinga i vassdraget skulle opphøre i 1980-åra. Øivind Vestheim skrev seinere boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer - Fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», først og fremst basert på trykte kilder, men med mange av Ljøstads fotografier som illustrasjoner. Boka ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings båtbyggervirksomhet på Flisa i Solør ble dokumentert i to omganger. Ljøstad og Vestheim var innom båtbyggerverkstedet i begynnelsen av mai 1984, men da var karene i ferd med å avslutte vinterens arbeid med bygging og reparasjon av fløterbåter. Museumsfolkene vendte tilbake den første uka i november samme år, for å følge produksjonen av den aller siste flisabåten på nært hold. Dette ble en båt med trespanter, til tross for at det vanlige ved dette båtbyggeriet, i hvert fall etter 1970, hadde vært å bruke jern i disse elementene. Lars B. Olastuen, som begynte i båtbyggeriet i 1969-70, hadde bare vært med å bygge to farkoster med trespanter før den som ble museets dokumentasjonsobjekt. Det finnes knapt notater fra Øivind Vestheims arbeid med dette prosjektet.
