Det norske Skogforsøksvesen ble etablert som en offentlig forskningsinstitusjon i 1917. Lenge arbeidet medarbeiderne i Skogforsøksvesenet primært med biologiske problemstillinger. Først etter 2. verdenskrig, om lag 30 år etter at Skogforsøksvesenet ble etablert, begynte institusjonen arbeide med driftstekniske undersøkelser. Ideen var forankret på øverste nivå i det norske skogbruket. Umiddelbart etter krigen gikk skogdirektør Karenus Sørhuus (1881-1971) inn for at den dyktige unge forstkandidaten Ivar Samset (1918-2015) skulle få studere ingeniørfag ved Norges tekniske høyskole i Trondheim. Etter to års studier der hadde Sørhuus sett for seg at Samset skulle bli leder for et nytt landbruksteknisk institutt i Oslo-området. Lederen i Skogforsøksvesenet, Erling Eide (1890-1966), grep imidlertid inn og tilbød Samset en forsøkslederstilling i sin organisasjon. Den første tida fikk Samset reise mye og se hvordan driftstekniske undersøkelser var organisert i nabolandenes skogbruk. Deretter gav Samset og legen Birger Tvedt seg i kast med en hogstundersøkelse, der enkelte av skogsarbeidere brukte de nye motorsagene som var på veg inn i skogbruket. Deretter fulgte forsøk med sikte på å utvikle effektiv tømmertransport med hest. I 1950 fikk Samset anledning til å bruke et helt år på ei studiereise til Canada. Derfra, og fra andre utenlandsreiser, vendte han hjem med mekaniseringsidéer som han ønsket å overføre fra utenlandsk storskogbruk til det norske bondeskogbruket.
De første åra foregikk forsøkene hos ulike forsøksverter, ofte storaktører i privatskogbruket. Ambulerende forsøksvirksomhet falt kostbart. En dag i slutten av 1950-åra traff Samset sin gamle skogskjøtselprofessor fra Norges Landbrukshøgskole, Knut Skinnemoen (1899-1992), som var skogforvalter i Akershus skogforvaltning. Skinnemoen antydet at Hurdal prestegardsskog kunne være en høvelig arena for den driftstekniske forsøksvirksomheten. Seinhøstes samlet Samset ledere fra Direktoratet for statens skoger og Skogforsøksvesenet til en befaring i Hurdal. Snaut halvannet år seiere, i januar 1959, inngikk Det norske Skogforsøksvesen kontrakt med Kirke- og undervisningsdepartementet om at Hurdal og Eidsvoll prestegardsskoger, med et samlet areal på drøyt 8 500 dekar, skulle brukes som forsøksskog, i første omgang for en periode på 25 år. Kontraktforholdet ble seinere forlenget med nye 25 år, og fikk dermed varighet fram til 2009.
Den driftstekniske forskningen Samset og hans kolleger arbeidet med var tuftet på oppfatninger om at så vel skogbruket som den skogbaserte industrien i Norge var under press i et stadig mer globalisert marked. De betraktet eierstrukturene, med mange små enheter både på skogeiersida og i industrien, som en del av problemet. Det ofte kuperte og bratte terrenget og lange avstandene til transportårer, som fløtingsvassdrag og bilveger, var andre problemer som den norske skognæringa måtte forholde seg til. Samset og medarbeiderne hans registrerte også at lønningene til den manuelle arbeidskrafta steg, og antok at dette var en tendens som ville fortsette. Driftsteknikerne mente at dette var utviklingstrekk som måtte møtes med motorisering og industrialisering, også i skogen. Forsøksskogene i Hurdal og Eidsvoll skulle bli utviklingsarenaer for et slikt mekanisert bondeskogbruk.
For å kunne drive slike forsøk trengte driftsteknikerne i Skogforsøksvesenet hus, både til driftsmateriell og til personalet. Tanken om et stort bygg ved det som opprinnelig ble kalt «Driftssentralen i Hurdal» ble reist i 1962. Personalet ved Skogforsøksvesenets driftstekniske avdeling begynte å diskutere hvilke funksjoner bygget skulle ha rom for og skissere løsninger. Skissene ble overlatt til arkitekt Per Fikseaunet (1920-2004), som bearbeidet dem til bygningstegninger. Statsfondet for skogbruk og skogindustri bidro med 200 000 kroner i 1963 og med nye 185 000 kroner i 1964. Dermed kunne byggmestrene Erik (1921-1990) og Leif Solberg (1897-1974) starte byggearbeidene. Bygningen fikk ei grunnflate på 860 kvadratmeter. Det inneholdt internat med blant annet 40 sengeplasser, kjøkken, spisesal, undervisnings- og øvingsrom, bibliotek og et stort fellesrom. Ved den offisielle åpningen seinhøstes i 1965 skal Ivar Samset blant annet ha sagt: «Her vil vi møtes, teknikere, forstkandidater, ingeniører fra inn- og utland til fri meningsutveksling. Dette er ikke et kurssentrum, det er et driftsteknisk forum – et samlingssted for skog- og skogindustrielle symposier.» Et slikt samlingssted måtte naturligvis ha et navn som gjenspeilte de faglige ambisjonene. Samset og hans samarbeidspartnere lot seg inspirere av latinen, som var det gamle naturfaglige vitenskapsspråket. Stedet ble kalt «Silvifuturum», en understrekning av at forsøksskogene i Hurdal skulle brukes til å utvikle skogbrukets framtid.

Samset er fotografert på ei hogstflate. Han var kledd i mørk vinterfrakk og nikkersbukser. Han hadde et lyst skjerf i halsen, hatt på hodet og gummistøvler på beina. Bildet er sannsynligvis tatt på et tidspunkt da han gjorde seg klar til å fortelle om forsøk den driftstekniske avdelingen i Det norske Skogforsøksvesen hadde gjort på nettopp denne lokaliteten.
Ivar Samset var født i Skien, der faren John Samset var skogforvalter i Grenland skogforvaltning. Gjennom å følge faren på en del av hans befaringer fikk unge Ivar et nært forhold til skogen og skogbruket som fagområde. Etter examen artium i 1938 hadde han praksis i Treschow-Fritzøes skoger i Siljan, før han fikk plass som elev ved skogskolen på Kongsberg. Derfra bar det videre til Norges Landbrukshøgskole på Ås, der han avla en meget god eksamen i 1944, etter å ha skrevet hovedoppgave om bøkeskogene i Vestfold. Den unge forstkandidaten Ivar Samset ble han ansatt som skogbrukslærer ved Buskerud landbruksskole. Daværende skogdirektør Karenus Sørhuus hadde imidlertid hørt om Samset, og visste at han var minst like interessert i teknologi som i bøkeskogens biologi. Sørhuus ordnet det slik at Samset fikk studere ved Norges tekniske høgskole i Trondheim. Skogdirektøren skal ha tiltenkt den evnerike unge mannen en posisjon i et jord- og skogbruksteknisk institutt han arbeidet for å få etablert i Oslo-området. Lederen i Det norske Skogforsøksvesen kom ham imidlertid i forkjøpet, og tilbød Samset en stilling som forsøksleder i en nyopprettet avdeling for driftstekniske undersøkelser under denne organisatoriske paraplyen. Samset oppfattet aktørene i skogbruket som grunnleggende konservative. Dette skal ha vært bakgrunnen for at han innledet sine undersøkelser med studier av manuell hogst og av transportredskaper med hest som trekkraft. I 1950 fikk Samset anledning til å reise et helt år for å studere skogbrukets driftsteknikk i Nord-Amerika. Han vendte tilbake med mange impulser, særlig fra det canadiske storskogbruket, som han etter hjemkomsten til Norge forsøkte å tilpasse det norske bondeskogbrukets vilkår. Også i åra som fulgte reiste han mye og kom begeistret hjem med idéer som han ville tilpasse norske forhold. Noen impulser gikk også den andre vegen, fra Samset og hans institutt til andre lands skogbruk. Samset høste mye anerkjennelse for sitt arbeid. Han sto blant annet sentralt i et omfattende samarbeid med det greske skogbruket. Samset var også en profilert aktør i IUFRO – International Union of Forest Reseach Organizations. I 1971 ble han valgt til president i IUFRO, et tillitsverv Samset hadde i fem år. Det siste året, i 1976, fikk han gleden av å være vert for en verdenskongress som samlet om lag 2 000 skogbrukere i Oslo. Også hjemme høstet Samset mye heder og anerkjennelse. I 1956 fikk han professortittel, og med den fulgte også en sentral posisjon i det skogfaglige miljøet ved Norges landbrukshøgskole. Et grunnleggende premiss for Samsets arbeid var hans oppfatning om at det norske skogbruket og den norske skogindustrien var under press, både i et hjemmemiljø med stadig stigende lønnskostnader og et stadig mer globalisert marked for skog- og tømmerprodukter med voksende prispress. Samset så det som sin og det driftestekniske forskningsmiljøets fremste oppgaver å være serviceorgan for aktørene i skogbruket i en slik situasjon. Han mente at teknoøkonomiske framskritt var en forutsetning for at skogsektoren skulle greie seg i den konkurransen den ble stadig mer eksponert for, og hadde liten forståelse for at bevilgningene tll virksomheten han ledet ikke var så store som han kunne ha ønsket. Samsets pågående, engasjerte personlighet og hans åpenbare faglige dyktighet bidro likevel til at driftsteknikk i de første tiåra etter 2. verdenskrig var ett av de aktivitetsfeltene i skogbruket det ble investert mest i. Samset var kjent for å ha en autoritær lederstil. «Hans diplomatiske evner er forholdsvis svakt utviklet» uttalte Oluf Aalde, som først stiftet bekjentskap med den fargerike professoren som student, deretter som medarbeider i Det norske Skogforsøksvesen, og seinere møtte ham igjen fra ulike posisjoner i det statlige skogbyråkratiet. Samset var overbevist om den driftstekniske forskningens og sin egen store betydning. Han kunne være skarp, kritisk og provoserende, noe som virket belastende på en del samarbeidsrealsjoner. På den annen side høstet han stor beundring for sin faglige dyktighet og sitt voldsomme engasjement for fagfeltet sitt og skogbruket som næring. Ivar Samset videreførte dette engasjementet også etter at han ble pensjonist. På sine eldre dager skrev han to sjølbiografiske bøker, «Storm gjennom skogene» (2003) og «Fra muskler til maskiner i skogen» (2008), basert på et omfattende dagbokmateriale fra et uvanlig aktivt liv i skogbrukets tjeneste.
Dette fotografiet er hentet fra ei samling som er skapt av og har tilhørt Det norske Skogforsøksvesen (1917-1972), Norsk institutt for skogforskning [NISK] (1972-2006) og Norsk institutt for skog og landskap (2006-) på Ås i Akershus. Tore Vik, som gjennom mesteparten av sin skogfaglige karriere var forsker ved de nevnte institusjonene, tok kontakt med Norsk Skogmuseum om arkivene etter virksomheten i 2007, året etter den gang siste omorganisering av virksomheten. De gamle arkivene med dokumenter og fotografier fra Avdeling for driftsteknikk forekom ikke den nye ledelsen relevante, og det ble reist spørsmål om Riksarkivet i Oslo eller Skogmuseet i Elverum kunne bidra til bevaring. Museet sa seg villig til å påta seg denne oppgaven. Avtale om overtakelse av fotoarkivet ble inngått i 2008. Materialet består av positivkopier i brevordnere, film i konvolutter og dias. Til sammen anslås det å omfatte cirka 27 000 opptak, i hovedsak fra perioden 1947-1990. Mye av materialet er fra prosjekter Avdeling for driftsteknikk har hatt i norsk skogbruk, men en god del er også fra reiser professor Ivar Samset gjorde som leder for den internasjonale skogforskningsorganisasjonen IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations). Kvaliteten på opptakene er varierende.
