Det første lenseanlegget på Nes i Skiptvet ble anlagt i 1853. Det kom som en erstatning for den gamle Lindhollensa nedenfor Vammastrykene i Askim, som hadde vært tømmersorteringsanlegg for nedre del av Glomma i mange hundrede år. Egentlig ble det, på grunn av vindforholdene, bygd to lenser på Nes i 1853. Den som ble kalt Neslensa lå på vestsida av elveløpet ovenfor Nestangen, der det var en markant elvesving. På motsatt side, og dermed i Eidsberg, lå den såkalte Buskildsrudlensa. Ved disse to anleggene ble alt tømmer som skulle til brukene ovenfor Sarpsfossen og i Sollielva sortert fra de beskjedne kvantaene som i denne perioden skulle til Fredrikstad. Etter hvert som antallet tømmerkjøpere og mengdene med tømmer økte, ble imidlertid kapasiteten ved anleggene for liten. Alt i 1859 ble det anlagt ei hjelpe- eller oppsamlingslense ved Furuholmen i Varteig. Etter ønske fra stadig flere og stadig mektigere sagbrukseiere i Fredrikstad, som mente at det ville være penger å spare på å samle all tømmersortering i den nedre delen av Glomma på ett sted, ble Nes og Buskildsrud lenser nedlagt i 1895, mens Furuholmen lense ble ombygd og kraftig utvidet. Furuholmlensa lå gunstig til med hensyn til vindforhold, men det var en ulempe at tømmer som skulle til Sanne og Solli bruk måtte slepes tilbake gjennom Mingevatnet. Da all fløting til Fredrikstad-brukene ble overført til det vestre løpet med passasje gjennom Mingevatnet, Isnesfjorden og tømmertunnelen til Eidet var tida moden for å tilbakeføre sorteringsanlegget til Nes. Dette ble realisert i 1908. Denne gangen ble Neslensa bygd like nedenfor Nestangen. Den nye lensa var epokegjørende i den forstand at den ikke var forankret i pæler, som var svakest når vann- og tømmermengdene var størst, med vaierfester. Denne løsningen ble seinere kopiert ved mange lenseanlegg i Norden. Den nye Neslensas store svakhet var vindeksponeringa, som kunne føre tømmeret på avveger, slik at det måtte kostbare oppsamlingsaksjoner til. Dette var, sammen med at reguleringer i vassdraget innskrenket lagringsplassen for tømmer ovenfor lensene, argumenter for flytting av virksomheten til Glennetangen i Skiptvet. Denne flyttinga ble realisert i 1938.
I 1993 ble det etablert et lensemuseum på Nes. Museet ligger idyllisk til ved Glomma. På land består anlegget av sag, verksted med smie, en dampdrevet kraftstasjon og ei spisebrakke. På elva ligger mosemaskinen med tilhørende hus.

Dette later til å være en mosemaskin av den typen fløtingsformann Arnt Svartedal utviklet da det ble klart at bunting av fløtingstømmer med håndmakt ikke lenger var effektivt nok til å kunne ta unna stadig voksende tømmermengder, antakelig tidlig på 1900-tallet. Denne mosemaskintypen besto av to flåteganger eller pongtonger som var montert parallelt med en fast innbyrdes avstand. I den ene enden av pongtongene var det montert ei slags bru med fangarmer, «sverd», som stakk ned i vannet. I den andre enden var det ei bevegelig bru, som ellers hadde samme form og egenskaper som den faste. Lensemannskapene ledet fløtingstømmer, på tvers av strømretningen, inn i bassenget mellom pongtongene. Deretter ble sverdene på den bevegelige brua senket, og så ble den kjørt med motorkraft mot den faste. På denne måten ble tømmeret ble presset sammen i en bunt, som det kunne slås en kjetting eller en stålvaier rundt. Fotografiet er tatt over en pongtong med trebru og skinnegang for ei bevegelig mosemaskinbru. Like bak pongtongen flyter det en tømmerbunt. Helt til høyre i bildeflata ser vi den faste endebrua på denne mosemaskinen. På den motstående pongtongen står det to fløtere. I bakgrunnen skimtes nok en mosemaskin og et par flytende skur med pulttak. På en bakkekam inne på land (til venstre i bildet) skimtes et gardstun og et kvitmalt våningshus.
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe de kalte «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette innebar at historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentasjonsarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte størstedelen av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
