Tømmertunnelen fra Isnesfjorden i Glommas vestre løp ble prosjektert med sikte på at fløterne i denne delen av vassdraget skulle kunne gjøre seg så god nytte av de tilgjengelige vannmengdene som mulig. Vann var nemlig en knapphetsfaktor, og fløtinga gjennom Sølvstufoss var en flaskehals i fløtinga. Arbeidet med den 3 170 meter lange tømmertunnelen, hvorav 2 602 meter skulle gå gjennom fast fjell, ble påbegynt i sommeren 1906. Opprinnelig hadde ingeniørene anslått at det ville ta fire-fem år å sprenge ut den delen av tunnelen som skulle gå i fjell. De tenkte seg da at det skulle sprenges fra begge sider av fjellet. De bestemte seg imidlertid for å gå ned med to synkesjakter. På denne måten kunne det sprenges fra flere fronter, og anleggstida kunne reduseres til drøyt to år. Høydeforskjellen mellom vannspeilene på Isnesfjorden og Visterflo er på cirka 20 meter, noe som gav tømmerrenna et fall på cirka 1:155. I tunnelen ble det lagt ei vanlig tømmerrenne av tre, men ved inntaket fra Isnesfjorden måtte det til ei leddet, regulerbar jernrenne som var 30 meter lang for å kunne justere vannføringa i tømmerrenna etter vannstanden i fjorden. I forkant av inntaksåpningen til tunnelen var det også en cirka 300 meter lang tautransmisjon som ble brukt til å hente tømmer fra opplagsplassene på fjorden. Samtidig med bygginga av tømmertunnelen ble det bygd nye lenseanlegg i nedre Glomma, først ved Nes (1908), seinere ved Glennetangen (1936). Ved disse anleggene ble tømmeret sortert etter påslåtte øksemerker, slått sammen i moser (bunter med vaierbind) og slept enten til Oppsund i det østre elveløpet eller hit til Svartedal eller Toppen. Fløtinga på denne siste strekningen var for øvrig ikke enkel, for det var stedvis grunt. Særlig ved Trøsken ble det arbeidd for å mudre og gjøre løpet lettere farbart. Ved utløpet av tømmerkanalen, ved Eidet, ble det bygd et lenseanlegg med to ledelenser og to mosemaskiner. Derfra ble mosene slept med båter gjennom Rolvsøysund til bedrifter, både fra Greåker og sørover mot Fredrikstad og ellers i Oslofjord-området.

I forgrunnen ser vi to digre stålportaler, som antakelig ble brukt til å justere posisjonen til «inntaksskuffen» for å tilpasse den til vannstanden i Isnesfjorden og dermed oppnå en høvelig vannføring inne i tømmertunnelen. På toppen den bakre av disse stålportalene er det bygd et lite bordskur med saltak og bordvegger, antakelig for å skjerme motoren som ble brukt ved heving og senking av inntaksskuffen. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt sto en mann på tømmeret ute i renna mens en del arbeidskamerater fulgte med fra flåtegangene på begge sider av innløpet. Til høyre i bildet ligger det ei kvilebrakke, en bordkledd bindingsverkskonstruksjon med saltak og med et krysspostvindu. Det arbeidet 25-30 mann på Toppen, et mannskap som administrativt sett var underlagt lensebestyreren på Eidet.
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette innebar at historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. Materialet ble enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
