I nordenden av innsjøen Øyeren skulle det fløtingstømmeret som kom flytende på vassdraget fra de skogrike bygdene nordover i Solør og Østerdalen. Det som skulle til sagbruk eller treforedlingsbedrifter på Nedre Romerike skulle skilles fra det som skulle videre over innsjøen mot den nedre delen av Glomma for videre bearbeiding til trelast eller papir ved anlegg som lå nærmere vassdragets utløp i salt sjø og skipsforbindelser som innebar avsetningsmuligheter på fjernere markeder. Tømmeret ble sortert på grunnlag av påslåtte økseprofiler i yteveden på stokkene. Disse profilene identifiserte kjøperne av hver enkelt stokk. Sorteringa skjedde lenge ved Bingen i Sørum, men i forbindelse med utbygginga av jernbanen mellom Kristiania og Kongsvinger i 1860-åra ble sorteringslensa flyttet til Fetsund i Fet. På 1900-tallet ble stokker som skulle i samme retning «soppet» – presset sammen i bunter – som ble bundet sammen ved hjelp av vaiere og lenket sammen med tanke på videre buksering, innover mot Lillestrøm eller sørover innsjøen mot Glommas videre løp i retning Sarpsborg og Fredrikstad. Ettersom passasjene i deltaområdet like nedenfor lenseanlegget ved Fetsund var smale og svingete, var det grenser hvor store og brede partier som kunne slepes her. Følgelig ble soppene først buksert i smale remser – «nedlegg» – fra den nedre delen av lenseanlegget til et sted som hette Sofiedal i Enebakk, etter 1978 til Engelsvika eller Årnestangen litt lengre sør, hvor faren for å gå på grunn var mindre. På et av disse stedene ble det første nedlegget fortøyd, mens slepebåten hentet det neste. Turen fra lenseanlegget til Sofiedal tok to-tre timer. Når to nedlegg var kommet dit, ble de bundet sammen til ei «vending». Og når det var gjort kunne slepebåtmannskapet starte på den lange turen ned mot Glommas utløp fra sørenden av Øyeren. Med slepebåten M/B Mørkfos som trekkraft tok tolv til atten timer å tilbakelegge denne distansen. Når dette var unnagjort ble det slepene lagt ved Sandstangen på østsida av innsjøen eller ved Sleppetangen på vestsida, der lokale fløtere løsnet bindslene slik at stokkene kunne flyte løst videre nedover, hvor de passerte flere kraftverksdammer via tømmerrenner som ikke hadde kapasitet til å ta buntet virke. De største vendingene på Øyeren inneholdt om lag 200 000 stokker. Lengre nede, ved Nes og seinere ved Glennetangen eller Furuholmen, ble tømmeret på nytt sortert og «moset» med sikte på slepebåtbuksering inn det østre eller det vestre elveløpet, avhengig av hva som passet best for kjøperen.

Her ble virket fra gammelt av sortert og «soppet» eller «moset» (buntet), og det som skulle til Lillestrøm, Strømmen og Oslo ble skilt fra det som skulle videre nedover vassdraget. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var det bare storbedriften Borregaard fabrikker i Sarpsborg som fortsatt fløtet, så noe særlig sortering var det ikke snakk om lenger. Tømmeret ble moset i høvelige bunter med hver sin «grime» (vaierbindsel). Inntil 200 av disse mosene ble bundet sammen i et slep som ble buksert forsiktig ned gjennom en meandrerende djupål i det grunne deltapartiet lengst nord i innsjøen. Når et slikt slep kom fram til Sofiedal ved Engelsvika på innsjøens vestside, like ved grensa mellom Rælingen og Enebakk kommuner, ble slepet ankret opp og slepebåten Mørkfos gikk tilbake til Fetsund for å hente nok et slep av samme type. Når også dette var framme ved Sofiedal ble de to slepene koplet sammen, slik at Mørkfos kunne trekke begge to sørover med ei lang trosse. I noen tilfeller ble det også hektet på bommer med løstømmer fra «etterrensken» langs sjøen. Slepet kom gjerne fram til Sleppetangen, ved nedre Glommas utløp fra Øyeren, seint på kvelden. Da ble slepet oppankret mot land, slik at lokale fløtere påfølgende dag kunne løsne vaierbindslene og la tømmeret flyte løst nedover mot tømmerrennene forbi kraftverksdammene nedover i vassdraget. Mørkfos gikk nordover mot Fetsund igjen om natta, slik at båten kunne fortsette slepearabeidet derfra neste morgen. Dette flyfotografiet er tatt etter at to slep var koplet sammen til ett, altså nedenfor Sofiedal, idet det slepes langs Øyerens vestbredd. Opptaket ble gjort i 1985, det siste året det foregikk kommersiell tømmerfløting i dette vassdraget.
Ved inngangen til året 1984 startet Norsk Skogbruksmuseum arbeidet med det som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Da var det klart at den tradisjonsrike tømmerfløtinga i vassdraget ville bli avviklet i 1985. Museet ønsket derfor å få i gang et dokumentasjonsprosjekt der tømmertransporten på vassdraget skulle ha hovedfokus. Historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som hadde arbeidet ved museet fra 1982, skulle ha hovedansvar for prosjektet. Han tok sikte på å samle et representativt utvalg av løse gjenstander fra fløtinga til museet, han ville dokumentere faste fløtingsinnretninger i vassdraget, ta vare på eldre fotografier og arkivalia, samt samle det han kalte «minne- og tradisjonsmateriale» med tilknytning til Glomma-fløtinga. Særlig museets fotograf, OT Ljøstad, var en trofast samarbeidspartner under arbeidet med prosjektet. Vestheim og Ljøstad reiste mye langs vassdraget i 1984 og 1985, men også i oppryddingsfasen i de par første sesongene etter dette. Glomma fellesfløtingsforening overlot sitt fotoarkiv, som besto av 72 album en del negativmateriale fra ulike deler av vassdraget, til Norsk Skogmuseum. Papirarkivene ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la dem bli liggende i den murte delen av kontorkomplekset Fellesfløtingsforeningen hadde hatt på Fetsund. Der veiledet Øivind Vestheim en del lokale medarbeidere som ble engasjert for å ordne arkivet. Forvaltningen av arkivmaterialet ble etter 1990 overlatt til lensemuseet, som ble etablert på Fetsund dette året. Mange av gjenstandene Vestheim samlet inn til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med prosjektet ble dessverre kjørt direkte på fjernmagasin i Elverum, uten at de ble registrert. Dermed gikk beklageligvis viktig informasjon om proveniens og bruk tapt. Heller ikke de fotografiske opptakene ble tilfredsstillende registrert da de var «ferske». Øivind Vestheim brukte en kassettopptaker som «feltdagbok» under mange av turene langs vassdraget. Bjørn Bækkelund skrev av mange av kassettene etter at han begynte ved museet høsten 1997. Innslagene av tradisjons- og minnemateriale på disse opptakene var få. Prosjekt Glomma skulle opprinnelig vare fra og med 1984 til og med 1988, altså i fem år. Det viste seg imidlertid at oppgavene ble mange, og at arbeidet tok lengre tid enn forutsatt. Øivind Vestheim avsluttet sin del av prosjektet med utgivelsen av boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer» i 1998. Han sluttet for øvrig ved museet like før boka var ferdig. I ettertid har nye medarbeidere ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum gradvis forsøkt å gjøre noe med det forvaltningsmessige etterslepet etter Prosjekt Glomma.
