I 1989 skrev Per Thoresen følgende om knivsmeden Bjarne Engli i «Knivbladet», Norsk knivforenings medlemsblad (3/89, side 16-19):
«Knivsmeden Bjarne Engli
I vår fikk jeg oppfylt en liten drøm jeg har gått med de siste årene: jeg fikk se Bjarne Engli smi! En dag i april kjørte jeg til Raudsand, overnattet hos Karen og Bjarne Engli, og besøkte Olav Bekken på Tingvoll museum rett over fjorden dagen etter. Mye knivprat den helga.
Hemmeligheten
Smeder har sine små hemmeligheter, og slik skal det være. Bjarne Englis hemmeligheter er etterspurt vare, og det skulle vært morsomt å presentere dem her og nå. Etter å ha studert saken, tror jeg at jeg kan si hva den store hemmeligheten er: total mangel på slurv og tilfeldigheter.
Det er slik det er med de beste smedene våre. De greier seg med få oppvarminger. De overoppheter ikke et sekund. De slår ingen overflødige slag, men får alt til med en gang uten å måtte korrigere underveis. De slår så hardt og fort og presist at det hele er over før du får summet deg. Og de har en helt spesiell omhu og grundighet fra de kapper om stålet og jernet og til den endelige slipinga.
Som Engli sier: Mange tror at herding og anløping er hele saken. I virkeligheten er alt du gjør viktig, fra først til sist.
En stakkars tilskuer er selvfølgelig fascinert av det som foregår, men også sørgelig klar over at her er det langt fram for en amatør.
Gruvesemeden
I 1982 ble Røsand Gruber nedlagt, og det lille samfunnet Raudsand i Romsdal gikk nesten i stå. Høye herrer langt borte ville heller investere i nordsjøolje enn i Raudsands vanadiumholdige jernmalm, selv om det var boret og klart for sprengning til de neste to års produksjon. Historien er velkjent fra mange slike «ensidige industristeder» som vi hører om på Dagsrevyen.
Det var ikke mange på stedet uten en eller annen tilknytning til Gruva. En av dem som mistet jobben var gruvesmeden Bjarne Engli, som hadde vært smed der i 25 år.
Engli ble krigspensjonist, noe som egentlig burde vært ordnet lenge før. Stor innsats i Hjemmefronten med mange opprivende opplevelser, og harde opphold i nazistiske fengsler og konsentrasjonsleirer hadde satt sine spor.
Hobbysmeden
Svært mye av verktøyet og utstyret i smia hadde han laget selv, og han fikk det med seg da han sluttet. Ambolten også. Ifølge Karen sto det bare i veien. Helt til Olav Bekken sa at ni setter vi opp ei lita smie! Engli kunne jo smi hva det skulle være, og med ei hobbysmie kunne han smi noe han alltid hadde likt å smi, men som det var blitt lite tid til: knivblader.
Smia kom opp, ei nøktern og praktisk smie uten nasjonalromantikk, med orden og ryddighet. Her ble det smidd det ene og det andre. I 1954 var han på Teknologisk Institutt i Oslo og lærte om varmebehandling av eggstål. Og han hadde smidd en del knivblader i årenes løp, men det hadde aldri blott tid til å utforske saken til bunns.
Nå ble det tid. Dette kunne forresten lett blitt noe annet enn smiing og knivblader. I tidligere år hadde «Engli-brødrene» spilt til dans og underholdt rundt om i distriktet, med Bjarne Engli på trekkspill. Det kunne fort blitt musikk i stedet.
Var det noen som ville ha knivbladene hans?
To blader havnet hos Anne Stalsberg i Trondheim. Hun må ha likt dem, for kort tid etter sendte hun det ene til Aasmund Voldbakken for at han skulle lage en kniv til henne med det bladet i. Voldbakken slipte og brynte bladet. Og ble overrasket over kvaliteten. Her var det en smed som hadde hatt en heldig dag!
I 1984 traff Voldbakken Engli på Elverum. Han hadde flere blader med seg, det kunne være morsomt å se om de var bra, de også? Han fikk kjøpt med seg noen, og gjorde en oppdagelse som mange har gjort etter: de var like bra, alle sammen. Voldbakken forteller at det var en opplevelse. Han skundet seg å bestille flere blader, og etter hvert ble det nesten alltid Engli-blader i knivene hans. Og omvendt: Hvis Engli hadde en bestilling fra Voldbakken liggende, gikk den foran. De andre fikk vente litt.
Dette samarbeidet førte til at Engli snart var en av våre mest kjente smeder. Det påvirket også bladene hans. I 1985 slipte han bort navnet «RAUDSAND» fra stempelet etter forslag fra Voldbakken. Og fasongen ble ofte den som Voldbakken foretrakk, også når han smidde for andre.
Etter de nødvendige eksperimentene (en periode var bladene noe bløte) er det svært få som kan levere så jevnt høy kvalitet som Engli.
Den ruglete overflaten er blitt litt av et varemerke for Bjarne Englis knivblader. Han hadde ikke sett denne utførelsen før, men påstår at det var han som begynte med det. Denne overflaten viser liksom bladet rett fra ambolten, og gir en helt spesiell kontakt med smeden. Alle feil blir synlige, eller det blir synlig at det ikke er noen feil.
Ettersom han la stålet helt opp i ryggen, lar han ikke ryggen være ruglete, slik vinkeljernsmedene av og til gjør. Bladene kan også bestilles glatte. De fleste synes vel at det ser best ut med et glatt blad til en kniv med blanke holker.
Et annet varemerke er den blanke stålranda, med tydelig skille mellom jern og stål.
Bladene med lang tange gir han en ekstra sveis. Ellers er det ikke hard sveis på Englis blader. De er f. eks. ikke stuket, det ville krevet en hardere sveis. Lange tanger blir smidd runde i enden, klar for gjenging.
Jeg synes det er morsommere å se på når det blir smidd med flattjern enn vinkeljern. Er den ene måten bedre enn den andre? Engli mener at han kan sveise ved lavere temperatur med flattjern, for slagget får flere steder å sprute ut på. Skal du file dekorasjoner i ryggen, er det en fordel at det er jern du filer i. Skal du derimot endre fasongen på et blad, er det en fordel at det er stål i ryggen, ellers er det lett for at slagg titter fram når du har slipt deg gjennom jernet.
Foran varmen
Et ord sier: «En smed bedømmes etter sin ild». Stemmer det, kommer Engli pent fra bedømmelsen, for jeg har knapt nok sett noen pleie essa som han. Varmen blir styrt og stelt så det er en fryd, ikke det minste slagg blir med over til smiing av neste blad så sant det lar seg pirke ut. Og belønningen kommer hele tida i form av en rein og klar varme, som riktig koser seg.
Etter å ha smidd omhyggelig og nøyaktig, med kraft og følelse, nærmer bladet seg ferdig fasong. Det blir sammenlignet med malen, og tykkelsen blir undersøkt med krumpasseren. Små justeringer blir gjort før stempelet blir slått i.
Alt som foregår foran ambolten har preg av at det er akkurat slik det skal gjøres. En smed som Engli er i stand til å holde varmen i emnet lenge på hver oppvarming, ved å smi jevnt og raskt uten de små pausene som får temperaturen til å rase nedover.
Når vi ser demonstrasjon av smiing ute, får vi lett et feialktig inntrykk av prosessen. I det sterke lyset ute blir emnet ofte varmet opp for mye. I den gode trekken blir det så kjølt ned raskere enn i ei smie, også fordi ambolten og hammeren er kaldere enn i smia. Og så blir hele oppvisningen lett ganske provisorisk. Smeden er ofte mye bedre på hjemmebane enn vi får inntrykk av der vi står i klynga og forstyrrer.
Så det er gøy å se det gjort på helt skikkelig vis denne gangen, i de vante omgivelsene, med det vante utstyret og med god tid.
Varmebehandling
Engli henviser til det Ulf Lie skrev om dette i artikkelserien sin i Knivbladet, og lar det bli med det. Som andre smeder har han sine hemmeligheter med herding og anløping, og de har han tenkt å beholde.
Men jeg tror at den viktigste «hemmeligheten» er nøyaktigheten. Han prøve en stekeovn til anløpning, men fant at resultatet ble dårlig. Da han kontrollerte varmen med termometer, så han at termostaten tillot store variasjoner. Nå har han skikkelig herdeovn og anløpingsovn, og nå er det ingen variasjoner mer.
Han tar fram noen knekte blader. Bruddflatene er ganske ulike. Han gjør stadig eksperimenter med både smiing og varmebehandling, og knekker bladene etterpå for å se resultatet. Det kan være en god investering.
Størjekanon
Det er vel heller få knivsmeder som ikke har smidd annet enn knivblader. Så det forbauser ikke det minste å få høre om revesakser, låser, økser og annet fra Engli. Vi så på dert han smidde til svenneprøven i 1952: «1 dekorativt gitter samt arbeide av 1 inntrukken dørlås med nøkkel». I en kvalitet som dere kan tenke dere. Karakteren ble «utmerket godt».
Da jeg var på Tingvoll museum neste dag, sa Olav Bekken av og til at den der er smidd av Engli, og den der borte, og den der, når han pekte på gjenstander på museet. En artig sak var ei størjekanon. Den havnet på museet da den ble pensjonert da makrellstørjene ble sjeldenheter langs kysten. Men den rakk å få tatt noen. Et par store brugder ble det også. Bekken sa at det kunne vel bli litt skyting med den til sommeren, sånn at folk fikk se hvordan den virket.
