I boka «Kniver og knivmakere» (1990) skrev Per Thoresen følgende om Olav H. Wåle:
«Olav H. Wåle, Heddal
Wåle er en av våre mest kjente knivmakere. Han lager både bunadskniver med fullt utstyr, brukskniver med utskåret slire, og enkle brukskniver med minimal dekor. Og han smir bladene sine selv. Han har gitt ut bok om å lage kniver («Kniven – en knivmakers hemmeligheter»), holdt en lang rekke knivkurs mange steder, demonstrert knivarbeid på mange arrangementer, holdt foredrag, vært knivdommer, fått førstepremier på utstillinger, vært intervjuet i aviser og fjernsyn. Olav H. Wåle er rene institusjonen.
Han er født og oppvokst i Hjartdal, men bor i Heddal, helt nede mot Notodden.
Før han prøvde seg som knivmaker, hadde han laget mye bunadssølv, og den første kniven han laget, på slutten av 1970-tallet, var en klassisk staskniv. Det vanlige er jo at en lager en god del brukskniver først. Ved en tilfeldighet fikk han vite at det skulle være knivkurs, med Torstein Groven som lærer, og han meldte seg på. Som erfaren sølvsmed slapp han unna de fleste nybegynnerproblemene som kan få mange andre til å gi opp. Etter dette kurset har han laget kniver, først som hobby, så på deltid, og i de senere årene har han sluttet som byggmester og gjort kniver til heltidsjobb. Bunadsølvet er det blitt stadig mindre av. Det kan gi bedre timebetaling, men han føler at knivarbeidet gir større utfoldelsesmuligheter.
Siden har han holdt mange kurs selv, der det er blitt laget mye kniver som ligner hans egne. Det er han forresten ikke så begeistret for, et kurs skal sette i gang saker og ting i hodet på deltakerne, han passer seg for å gi altfor detaljerte og konkrete instrukser. Og han passer seg for å korrigere for mye, for da blir det lett en Wåle-kniv av det.
Stasknivene hans bygger på telemarkstradisjonen, med gravering etter Bjørn Kleppos forbilder. Likevel skiller de seg klart ut fra andre knivmakeres kniver. Han har arbeidet mye med formen og komposisjonen, han syns mange kniver av denne typen har en form så stiv og stram at de sitter i slira som en blyant. Skaftene hans er langt mykere i linjene. Og de fine bladene hans følger samme linjer.
Dekoren i sølvet har han ikke gjort like mye for å videreutvikle, den er fremdeles av type Kleppo, selv om det også her er lett å se at det er en Wåle-gravering en har foran seg. Han sier at det er mye som er ugjort her, han skulle gjerne hatt mer grundige kunnskaper om dekorasjon.
Wåle er forsiktig med å forandre staskniven før han er sikker på at det er til det bedre. I staskniven er det solid tradisjon og nokså strenge hovedregler. Disse kan nok brytes, men ikke bare for å forandre.
En konkurranse som ble spesielt viktig for ham, var «Skogskniven» på Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1985. Juryen uttalte at Wåles enkle, kraftige brukskniv var utstillingens beste med god margin. Skogskniven hans har han siden laget en mengde av.
En annen hovedtype er en med stempeldekor. Her har han hentet idéer fra gamle dagers tvislirer. I disse knivene har han skapt sin egen type, en helstøpt knivmodell som skiller seg ut, for slik stempeldekor er pussig nok lite brukt, det er mye vanligere med fri pauting. Han får til fine effekter ved å kombinere ganske få stempler, det gir et dypt, karakteristisk mønster med mange variasjoner.
Wåle har ikke så mye sans for overdekorerte brukskniver. En staskniv fra Telemark skal være heldekorert, men brukskniven kan godt være nesten uten dekor. Han liker Skogskniven godt, det er mye brukskniv for pengene. Men mange vil jo gjerne ha litt mer, og en variant med utskåret slire er populær, eventuelt med elghorn i skaftenden mot bladet.
Det er ingen tvil om at Skogskniven har trekk fra Voldbakkens kniver, men det er mest av utseende. Slira er sydd på lest, av lær uten rårand, innsatt med skjellakk. Wåle syr også slirer med friere utforming, med rårand og uten bruk av lest. Voldbakken sa at Wåle var eksempel på en som var blitt påvirket av idéene hans uten å kopiere. Han hadde tatt opp i seg og fordøyd og bearbeidet inntrykkene. Og så hadde han laget sine egne modeller på sin måte ut fra dette materialet.
To velkjente detaljer er Wåles egne. Først den viktige plasseringen av sømmen. Den går ut mot kanten av slira, gjemt bak kanten. Han mener dette er det beste stedet å legge sømmen. Den blir stabil, den holdt godt sammen i den skarpe krummingen, og den gir plass for den andre detaljen: det spesielle opphenget. Voldbakken likte godt begge disse måtene å gjøre det på, i en av knivene som var på utstillingen som ble stjålet i 1989, hadde han selv gjort det på akkurat samme måte – han hadde lyst til å kopiere litt en gang, han også! Kniven hadde dessuten O.H.W.-blad, som mange fine kniver fra Voldbakken har hatt.
I bruksknivene bryr Wåle seg lite om millimeterpresisjon og strøkne detaljer. Dette er robuste kniver, han lager brukskniver for at de skal bli brukt. Er det en veggdekorasjon om å gjøre, henviser han til stasknivene. Nå havner de jo ofte på veggen i alle fall, bruksknivene også, dette kraftige preget er det mange som setter høyt. Og andre som misliker.
Noe av preget fra bruksknivene går igjen også i stasknivene, uten at de er grove. Utskjæringene er av samme type, og i graveringen er det også ting som er i slekt med bruksknivene.
Wåle lager kniver på bestilling. Det kan gi mer frihet å lage det en har lyst til og håpe å få solgt det etterpå, men det gir en fin følelse av trygghet å ha lang bestillingsliste. Han setter av tid til kniver utenom lista, slik at han får noen å selge på knivtreff. Disse knivene uten oppdragsgivere gjør at han får eksperimentere og utvikle seg videre og ikke bli sittende fast i de kjente modellene.
Det går omtrent like mange rette og krumme staskniver. Og nå er det over halvdelen som bestiller knivene med gravert sølvplate i opphenget. Det gir stor, ekstra flate for en pen gravering, det gjør at kniven blir enda mer påkostet og staselig, men selv ville jeg valgt kniven uten slik plate. Jeg syns det er en sak som ikke hører til kniven, liksom. En smaksak, selvfølgelig.
Det er mest private kunder, hos Wåle som hos andre knivmaker. Men han liker spesielt godt offentlige oppdrag, eller fra firmaer. Det er morsomt å se knivene sine brukt som eksklusive gaver og premier, enten det er gaver til kongelige eller premier på travbanen. Det er ikke bare fordi det er han som blir valgt, men også fordi det er kniver som blir valgt til dette, at kniver blir vurdert høyt nok til slikt, for eksempel i stedet for en gullklokke. Ofte blir en kniv gitt sammen med knivboka hans.
Det er også morsomt å lage ting som blir vurdert som investeringsobjekter. En av knivsamlerne har etter hvert kjøpt hele femten staskniver fra Wåle.
Brukskniver laget i store serier kunne lønt seg bra, men med den arbeidsmåten han bruker, har han faktisk bedre timebetaling for å lage staskniver. Men en staskniv er et alvorlig prosjekt, det kan være avslappende å lage brukskniver innimellom.
Wåle tror sikkert at han må gå helt lei av å lage kniver en dag. Han blir stadig vekk lei, men foreløpig ikke verre enn at det hjelper å lage en Skogskniv eller to.»
I 1995 skrev Johan E. Strand denne artikkelen om Olav H. Wåle i Norsk knivforenings medlemsblad, Knivbladet:
«OLAV H. WÅLE
Olav H. Wåle betraktes som en av våre aller fremste knivkunstnere. Han mestrer de fleste teknikker og lager alt fra den enkleste brukskniv til de fineste staskniver med dekor i både gull og sølv. Opp gjennom årene har Wåle vært en markant skikkelse i norsk knivmiljø; han har avholdt en rekke knivkurs, vært mye benyttet som knivdommer og holdt mange foredrag om knivstell. Det er derfor ikke til å komme utenom at han jevnlig har blitt portrettert i både aviser, ukeblad og fjernsyn.
Wåle har fått et tyvetalls førstepremier og har forfattet to knivbøker. Å kalle ham en «institusjon» innen knivmakerfaget er derfor ikke for svakt. Til glede for Knivbladets lesere er Wåke villig til å øse fra sin utømmelige viten om knivmakerens edle kunst. I tillegg kommer han med friske synspunkter om bl.a. knivdømming, et hett tema blant mange knivfolk.
Olav H. Wåle burde være kjent av alle norske knivmakere, så i stedet for å fylle sidene med personalia, har jeg også bedt ham komme med tips om knivmaking, noe bladet stadig har etterlyst. Dette portrettet blir derfor en fin blanding av personalia, historikk og meninger fra en nestor i faget.
Olav H. Wåle er født i 1928 og oppvokst i Hjartdal i Telemark. I dag bor han i Heddal, nær Notodden. Utdannelsen fikk han i bygningsfaget og drev i flere år som byggmester. I tillegg har han arbeidet som sølvsmed og laget mye fint bunadssølv før han begynte med staskniver. Arbeidet som sølvsmed gav ham en solid plattform som knivmaker, og resultatene lot ikke vente på seg. Resultatet ble redusert smykkeproduksjon og økt knivmakerarbeide.
Wåle lager fremdeles bunadssølv, men mest deler for å komplettere utstyret til tidligere kunder.
Knivsmiing
Wåle smir selv sine knivblad, og har derfor selvsagt benyttet egne blad på de fleste knivene han har laget. Han fikk tidlig interesse for smiarbeidet og prøvde seg allerede i barneårene sammen med faren, som reparerte gårds- og hesteredskap og kvesset minebor. I 1946 fungerte han derfor som «borsmed» på linjearbeide.
«Jeg var vel ikke rare smeden», minnes han, «men jeg måtte jo forsøke etter beste evne.» Senere la han smiinga på hylla, og tok ikke opp håndverket før han begynte å smi knivblad. Knivbladproduksjonen har aldri vært stor, men fra tid til annen blir det noen blad han ikke selv har brukt til egne kniver, og de har vært ettertraktet. Råsmidde blad begynte han først å smi i 1984, og de har blitt meget populære.
Wåle er opptatt av gamle tradisjoner, og han husker at i guttedagene var alle knivblad råsmidde og at tinndølbladene lå i gamle spikerkasser på butikken, uslipte på både bladside og egg.
Stål til knivblad
Til det bløte stålet bruker Wåle kaldvalset plate, St.12.03, da han synes at dette er lettere å sveise og bearbeide enn det vanlige St.37-stålet. Eggstålet bør helst ha 0,9-1 % karbon og minst mulig legeringsmetaller som mangan, nikkel, krom og annet. Han har også benyttet svensk, lavlegert stål med 0,89 % karbon, det østerrikske VEW.K90 og det svenske SIS 2140-stålet; alt med godt resultat.
Han påpeker at det er viktig å merke seg at både herdetemperatur og anløpning som oftest må endres ved overgang til andre ståltyper. Det er også viktig for kornstrukturen og skarpheten i bladet at stålet blir skikkelig hamret (pakket) under utsmiing. Dette er detaljer som kanskje innvirker like mye på bladets endelige kvalitet som både herding og anløping.
«De gamle smedene hadde årelang erfaring i å smi og varmebehandle stålet. De forstod kanskje ikke helt hva som skjedde i forbindelse med herding og anløping, og dekket seg derfor gjerne bak mystikk og overtro. I dag har vi tekniske oppgaver til hjelp når stålet skal varmebehandles, men dette mangler fortsatt mange knivsmeder, så også i dag er erfaring og gode arbeidsrutiner avgjørende for den endelige kvalitet», sier Wåle med ettertrykk.
Skaftemner
Wåle er kresen ved valg av skaftemner og vektlegger i tillegg tørkingen. Spesielt når skaftet skal holkes, deles opp med mellomringer eller legges beslag på, er han nøye. På rått treverk bør endene beskyttes med litt voks, slik at tørkeprosessen går langsommere. Trebitene kan gjerne ligge med barken på en tid, slik at veden surner noe. Oppbevaring i kjeller uten for mye lufting er glimrende.
Tørkingen kan også fremskyndes ved koking i vann med litt salt – til trebitene synker. Deretter tørkes de på vanlig måte, med endestykkene beskyttet av voks eller lim. En ekstra uttørring i varmeskap kan også gjøre godt og spare deg for mange ergrelser. Den ideelle tørkingen er når store emner får tørke langsomt. Senere kan de splittes, slik at de enkelte, små stykkene får tørke langsomt hver for seg.
«Drømmeemnet» må bevares som en drøm. «Det kommer svært ofte an på øyet som ser, om skjønnhet skal bedømmes. Mens én knivmaker ønsker skaft med fin mønsterstruktur over det hele, vil en annen kanskje heller ha et med mere variasjon og liv i veden.
Slirelær
Olav H. Wåle benytter mange forskjellige former for sliredekor. Å komme inn på alle detaljer, er å gå for langt, men vi vil spørre om hans erfaringer med forskjellig lær, et aktuelt debattemne.
Han sier at det i perioder har vært vanskelig å skaffe godt slirelær, men at det i dag som regel går greit. Wåle foretrekker gjennomgarvet masurlær til slirer med skåret dekor. Til slirer med pauting og annen dekor i fuktig lær vil han heller ha lær med rårand, gjerne med litt løs struktur i overflaten. Til glatte slirer er det best med masurlær, sier han, for kniven har lett for å sette seg fast i en rårandlærslire som er blitt fuktig. Han legger til med et glimt i øyet at det er mange som har fått ødelagt fisketuren fordi kniven sitter dønn fast i slira.
Overdrevet bruk av lærfett på slira er skadelig. Siden vi forsøker, ved valg av lær, tørking og etterbehandling, å få slira så hard og stabil som mulig, bør den ikke mykes for mye opp med lærfett. Til beskyttelse mot fuktighet synes Wåle at det er tilstrekkelig med en forsiktig overflatebehandling med silikonfritt lærfett eller skokrem.
Holker
«For å bli dyktig gravør, gjelder det, her som ellers, at øvelse gjør mester», sier Wåle, som selv er litt av en mester i den kunsten. Det som skjemmer holker og beslag i edle metaller, er ofte dårlig avretting og pussing. Vi ser fordypninger og spor etter fil og pussepapir, selv etter at holken er blanket og polert, sier Wåle engasjert.
Skikkelig utkoking i svovelsyre eller liknende er nødvendig for å fjerne kopperoksyd og andre ureinheter i overflaten. God avpussing og rengjøring er spesielt viktig på gull, og dessverre ser vi ofte gullholker med så dårlig glans at de like gjerne kunne ha vært laget av kopper eller messing. Selvsagt, legger han til, må metallholker være helt ferdige og syrebehandlet før de graveres.
Samlerobjekter og kongelige kniver
Allerede i 1984 gikk bladet Kapital så langt at de betegnet Wåles staskniver som gode investeringer. Det burde fortelle noe om hans omdømme og kvalitetsnivå. Wåle har levert kniver over hele landet, til alle samfunnslag, også til kongelige personer. Da dronning Sonja fylte 50 år, lå det en Wålekniv på gavebordet. Det var selvsagt en damekniv i bunadsutførelse. I 1987 laget han staskniver til Sara og Andrew i England. Knivene var bestilt av SAS.
«Når jeg tenker på alt det styr det i ettertid har vært med det engelske kongehus, er det nesten latterlig å tenke på all den ståhei det var mellom Utenriksdepartementet, Den engelske ambassade og Kongehuset for å få inngravert de kongelige navnene på knivene» - sier Wåle humoristisk.
Knivbøker
Olav H. Wåle er en allsidig mann, for ved siden av et bredt knivmakeri, har han også begått to bøker om samme emne. «Kniven – en knivmakers hemmeligheter» fra 1987 og «I knivmakerens verksted» som kommer ut i år. Her går han også et skritt videre fra den forrige boka og lærer deg å mestre vanskelige oppgaver, som smiing, holking, gull og sølvarbeider.
Knivdømming og utstillinger
Det burde være kjent at Wåles kniver har oppnådd et tyvetalls førstepremier på en rekke utstillinger. I en årrekke har han også fungert som dommer for slike arrangement. Han har klare meninger om slike konkurranser, og her er mye å merke seg:
Han er noe usikker på om knivmakeren også må ha smidd bladet selv for å kunne oppnå første premie. Han er kjent med at dette har vært krevd tidligere, og at både Bjørn Kleppo og Ole Jacobsen Vestby måtte avstå fra første premie i konkurranse fordi de ikke benyttet selvsmidde knivblad.
«Den praksis enkelte knivdommere bruker i dag er helt forkastelig, da den gir dårligere resultat hvis knivmakeren bruker eget blad. Dette har jeg påpekt overfor dommere og knivmakere, og kan gjerne vise hva jeg mener med disse eksemplene:
Jeg smir to knivblad av samme type, størrelse og kvalitet. Begge har en liten feil, f.eks. ujevn slip på den ene siden, eller en liten veile. Det ene bladet bruker jeg selv i en staskniv som leveres inn til konkurranse. Slire, skaft og utførelse blir bedømt til 1. premie, men kniven trekkes ned til 2. på grunn av feil i bladet.
Det andre bladet overdrar jeg til en annen knivmaker som benytter det i en staskniv som også leveres til samme konkurranse. Kniven får samme gode bedømmelse som min og oppnår 1. premie. Feilen i bladet blir kanskje anmerket, men knivmakeren får intet trekk fordi han ikke selv har smidd bladet.
Selv om enkelte kanskje vil kritisere det, har jeg i forbindelse med dømming i konkurranser praktisert å gi knivmakeren fullt ansvar for det bladet som monteres i kniven. Er det benyttet et blad av feil størrelse, form, sliping eller etterbehandling, har knivmakeren fått trekk for dette.
Spørsmålet om bedømming av blad på 1. premiekniver bør snarest avklares, og det burde gis ekstra poeng til den som lager alle knivens deler selv.
For å få mer like forhold i konkurranser bør det snarest mulig settes opp retningslinjer og regler for bedømming. Delte klasser for tidligere premierte og upremierte burde utgå, for en ny knivmaker skal ikke komme lettere frem enn de gamle. Dermed unngår vi også det store skillet mellom gode og dårlige 1. premiekniver. En slik kniv bør ha samme status enten den kommer fra nybegynneren eller spesialisten. Heri ligger nettopp en del av utfordringen til knivmakeren. Det virker kanskje urettferdig for nybegynnere, men for å hjelpe nye knivmakere burde disse få anledning til å levere kniver til egen klasse, hvor de vurderes av erfarne knivfolk. Her bør det ikke være premiering, men kanskje et deltakerbevis eller diplom. På den måten kan en usikker nybegynner få litt hjelp til å komme videre uten å risikere den helt store nedturen. Den som mener han er god nok, kan selvfølgelig ta sjansen og sende kniven sin til «vanlig bedømming».
Profesjonell knivmaker
Siden 1981 har Wåle vært knivmaker på heltid, og omtrent like lenge har han avholdt en mengde knivkurs; i 1980-årene spesielt tilknyttet Akademiet i Rauland i Vest-Telemark.
Olav Wåle har aldri angret på disse årene som heltids knivmaker: «Jeg har fått være med i en viktig utviklingsperiode innen norsk knivmaking. Selv om jeg ikke har stukket meg frem blant de mange «landsfedrene», har jeg hatt en fin tid blant norske knivmakere.
Jeg tror jeg tør si at jeg har hjulpet hundrevis, kanskje tusener et skritt videre på veien. Langt de fleste har også satt pris på hjelpen, og jeg har opp gjennom årene fått takk fra både kjente og ukjente. Dessverre er det også noen av «knivfolka» som har blitt sure når jeg har fått litt oppmerksomhet, og mener samtidig at dette kunne de gjort bedre selv. Synd at det skal være slik, men det har ikke plaget meg så mye.
Jeg går i løpet av året over i pensjonistenes rekker, og har derfor de siste årene tatt inn minst mulig nye bestillinger. Etter hvert vil jeg bare lage kniver når jeg har lyst og krefter.
Fremdeles ligger jeg inne med bestillinger for om lag ett år, men her vil det nok dessverre bli forsinkelser på grunn av sykdommen som har plaget meg den siste tiden.»
Wåle gjennomgikk en større operasjon like før påske, og Knivbladet ønsker han en riktig god bedring og mange gode knivmakerår i fremtiden.»
