«Tømmersleping i Odalen:
Odalsbåten tilbake til Storsjøen.
I løpet av året går hundrevis av mennesker lenselangs på turstien fra Fetsund sentrum helt ned til båthuset ved Fetsund lenser. Det siste året har kanskje flere lagt merke til at noe mangler på utsida av flåtene ved Blikomøya? Ganske riktig – det er en båt som mangler. Helt fra 1970-tallet har en blå/hvit elvebåt ligget akkurat her. I november i fjor ble den tilbakeført til sin opprinnelige hjemmehavn i Storsjøen i Odalen.
Mange hadde et forhold til båten som «alltid» hadde hatt sin havn utenfor Blikomøya ved Fetsund lenser. For de som bodde i lokalområdet, var det i flere år et slags vårtegn når motoren startet opp, og den lett gjenkjennelige dunk-dunk-duren kunne høres over deler av Nerdrum og Øya. Men båten har ikke alltid ligget her. Den er ikke engang fra Fet og har aldri vært brukt på lensene. Båten har derimot en spennende fortid som slepebåt i Storsjøen.
Storsjøen
Storsjøen, som har et areal på 45.61 kvadratkilometer (mot Øyerens 84,74), tilhører Glommavassdraget og er delt mellom kommunene Sør- og Nord-Odal. Innsjøen er forbundet med Glåma – som elva heter lenger nord – gjennom Oppstadåa. I Oppstadåa er vannføringen spesiell. Når Glåma mellom Funnefoss kraftverk og Kongsvinger kraftverk ligger høyt, renner den mot nord inn i Storsjøen. Når Glåma ligger lavt renner den derimot mot sør. Oppstadåa er med dette en av to elver i Norge som faktisk renner begge veier! Dette fenomenet gir varierte opplevelser for båtfolket. Innsjøen er også kjent for å være svært grunn med en maksdybde på bare 17 meter (mot Øyerens 71 meter).
Odalsbåten og tømmersleping i Storsjøen
Storsjøen har lange tradisjoner som fløtningsvann, og det er her «vår» båt har sin fortid. Båten, som for flere i Fet bare ble kalt «Odalsbåten» heter virkelig VB51 eller «Varp 1» og ble bygd ved Glommen Mekaniske Verksted i Fredrikstad i 1914. Båten var den første varpebåten bygd ved verkstedet, og samme år ble den levert Christiania Tømmerdirektion for bruk i Storsjøen.
I Storsjøen fikk båten kallenavnet «Prammen». Kanskje ikke så rart, da den bare stikker 60 cm dyp og er flat i bunnen. Båten ble umiddelbart satt i arbeid med å trekke tømmer fra utislagsplassene i Storsjøen og helt ut i Glåma. Den ble også brukt i selve Glåma, som utenfor Strøm kirke i Sør-Odal, blir delt av Strømsholmen. Det ene løpet, Krakerudfossen, var fløtingsløpet. Her er elva bred og stri og fylt av store steiner. Det andre løpet, Veslefossen, er trangere og farbar for båter som ikke stikker dypt. I en plan fra 1856 ble det for øvrig planlagt en strømkanal gjennom Veslefossen, men dette ble aldri satt ut i livet. Under sluttrensken i Glåma ble båtene fra Storsjøen brukt i Glåma helt opp til Fulufjorden i Sør-Odalen.
Til tross for at Storsjøen bare er om lag halvparten av Øyeren, tok slepene lengre tid. Slepene på mellom tre og fire tusen kubikk var også mye mindre enn slepene i Øyeren, som i gjennomsnitt kunne være på mellom 150 000 og 200 000 stokker (som utgjør ca. 15 – 30 000 kubikk). Med en motor på bare 12 HK var framdriften på VB51 lav i forhold til de store slepebåtene på Øyeren. Til sammenlikning hadde den langt større slepebåten «Mørkfos», som gikk over Øyeren, en motor på 240 HK (fra 1953 til 1965) og en motor på 316 HK (fra 1966 til dags dato).
I 1975 ble en tidligere fløter og båtsmann i Storsjøen, Karsten Sæther, intervjuet i Glomdalen. Sæther mønstret på VB51 som 18-åring i 1920, og arbeidet på båten helt fram til 1969. Han kunne fortelle om lange dager om bord: «Det var en lei jobb i kaldt vær. Det kunne ta oss et døgn å dra tømmeret over Storsjøen … Stod vinden imot, måtte vi henge oss fast til en stang (pål) og vente på bedre vær …». For mannskapet kunne det også bli dårlig med søvn. Sæther forteller: «I begynnelsen arbeidet vi ett døgn hver, og hvilte ett døgn. Vi var to mann på hvert lag. Senere begynte vi med to døgn hver. Hvis været tillot oss å arbeide hele tida, ble det ikke noe søvn de to døgnene. Fløterne hadde jo akkord, og det var tre fløterlag på Storsjøen fra begynnelsen av 30-åra som vi skulle ta imot tømmer fra. Fløterne ville sjølsagt at vi skulle hente tømmeret fortest mulig.»
Ombygging i Fetsund.
I 1954 kom VB51 til Fetsund for første gang. Båten ble fraktet med jernbanen til lensene for å bli bygd helt om. Båten fikk nytt overbygg og motoren ble byttet ut med en «Säffle» på 25 HJ. Den «nye» båten ble fraktet tilbake til Odalen, der den ble satt ut ved Ullernsundet. Den nye motoren kortet derimot ikke nevneverdig på slepetiden, da mannskapet om bord ikke kunne gå fortere fordi de var redd for at tømmeret i bommene de slepte skulle velte ut under lekken som holdt tømmeret sammen.
Nedleggelsen av fløtinga i Storsjøen.
Utover i 1960-åra gikk tømmermengden sterkt tilbake i hele Glommavassdraget. Dette førte blant annet til at flere sidevassdrag i Glommavassdraget ble lagt ned. Forslaget om nedleggelse av fløtinga i Storsjøen kom i januar 1969. Dette ble gjennomført raskt, og 1969 ble siste sesongen VB51 trakk tømmer fra utislagsplasser som Råsen og Korsmo. Båten ble lagt opp på Bukkeneset, som hadde vært hovedstasjon og vedlikeholdsplass for fløtinga i innsjøen.
Odalsbåten til Fetsund.
Etter nedlegelsen gikk VB51 en uviss tid i møte. Den ble liggende ubenyttet noen år, før Glomma fellesfløtingsforening (Gfff) i 1974 besluttet å flytte båten til Fetsund Lenser. Båten ble liggende på Viulbanen etter at den ble flyttet til Fetsund. Hva som var Gfffs intensjoner med å flytte båten hit er uvisst. Da det ikke var mer fløting i Storsjøen, var det naturlig å flytte båten til et sted der fløtinga fortstatt pågikk, og muligens var båten tiltenkt en rolle i renskinga i Øyeren, eller kanskje også til å samle sammen resttømmer i Svellet mellom Fet og Lillestrøm. Med en dybde på bare 60 cm, skulle man tro at båten ville vært ideell til dette formålet. Dette skjedde imidlertid ikke, og båten ble liggende ubrukt ved Viulbanen på Fetsund lenser fram til 1977. Båten ble da solgt til Øyvind Berg (f. 1941) fra Nerdrum i Fet.
Fra slepebåt til fritidsbåt.
Øyvind Berg hadde sterke røtter til Glomma og lensene hvor han tilbrakte mye tid i barndommen. I ungdomsårene jobbet han også som sagarbeider ved Nedrumsbruket. Berg hadde klare planer for båten, og det var flere elementer som ikke gjorde den spesielt egnet som fritidsbåt. Dette satte Berg seg fore å gjøre noe med! Før båten kom i nærheten av det våte element, la Berg ned mange timer for å istandsette den og gjøre den til en ideell fritidsbåt.
Mye av arbeidet ble gjort mens båten fortsatt lå på Viulbanen. Bak båtens hytte sto det en diger vinsj med en vekt på 4 tonn. På vinsjen hadde det vært en vaier på 3 – 4 000 meter som ble brukt til å dra tømmerbommer med. I tillegg til den store vinsjen, stod selve motoren inne i hytta! Den store vinsjen ble tatt ut av båten ved hjelp av lensenes egen kran. Berg kunne tenke seg en større hytte, og kappa løs hytta med vinkelsliper og flyttet den bak der vinsjen hadde stått. Det ble så sveisa et nytt motorrom til motoren, hvor veggene ble isolert med støymatter. I den nye og større hytta lagde Berg en vinkelbenk. I tillegg ble det lagd ny dørk og hytta ble kledd innvendig med vannfast kryssfinér. Som om ikke dette var nok, ble den gamle slepepropellen byttet ut med en ny for å gi båten mer fart. Berg sveiset også på et rekkverk og malte båten blå og hvit. Fra før hadde båten Gfffs farger i brunt og grått. Motoren ble også vedlikeholdt og fikk blant annet ny regulator.
Det enorme arbeidet bar frukter og våren 1978 kunne båten endelig sjøsettes. Etter at Odalsbåten var blitt heist ned til skråningen nedenfor Viubanen, fikk Berg hjelp av lensearbeider og båtførrer Olav Lund som trakk båten ut med vinsjen på «Nøkken».
Fritidsbåten.
Å finne en god båtplass skulle en kanskje tro ville by på problemer. Båten var i lengste laget for en plass på de private bryggene i Fet. Men da Berg kjøpte båten av lensene, satte han det som en forutsetning at den skulle kunne ligge på lenseområdet. Valget falt på landgangen ved Blikomøya. Et grunt område, men en ypperlig båtplass for den flate «Prammen».
I Bergs eie ble båten mest brukt til fisking, spesielt var området rett utenfor innerråka og midtråka i utløpet av Øyeren en god fiskeplass. Her ble det blant annet tatt opp mye stor gjedde, og Øyvind og broren kunne ha det moro med å tre de digre gjeddehuene på pålene ved båtplassen. Dette er noe artikkelforfatteren husker spesielt godt! Berg satte også garn til sikfiske og fikk gode fangster. Noen ganger kunne det gå i 40-50 sik før garnet var satt ferdig! Selv om båten egnet seg bra til overnatting, ble det mest dagsturer i de nordre delene av Øyeren.
Utover på 1990-tallet og fram mot salget av båten i 2011, ble båten mindre benyttet og tanken på å selge båten ble etter hvert reell. Men det var ikke før noen entusiaster fra Storsjøen kom på visitt at salget ble en realitet.
Tilbake til Storsjøen.
Interessen for å få «Prammen» hjem ble for noen år siden vekket av noen entusiaster med base på Sand i Nord-Odal. Etter flere besiktigelser gikk salget i orden høsten 2011. Etter 37 år i «fremmed» havn skulle båten tilbake til hjemmehavna i Storsjøen. Den 11. november ble båten trukket opp av Glomma og fraktet med lastebil til Bukkeneset i Storsjøen.
De nye eierne – åtte entusiaster – eier hver sin andel i båten. Deres hovedplan var å få båten hjem og bevare den for ettertiden i sitt opprinnelige miljø. På Bukkeneset ligger det flere fløterbåter som er med på å danne et helhetlig miljø og minne fra en forgangen tid da tømmerfløting var en viktig del av innsjøen.
Båten har ligget på land siden flyttingen, men den er nå flyttet innendørs. Entusiastene, som med tiden vil danne en mer formell venneforening, har planer om å sjøsette båten våren 2013. De har ikke tenkt å gjøre nevneverdige endringer på den, for eksempel vil den forbli blå og hvit. Båten skal brukes av venneforeningen til turer, og i 2014 er det planer om å feire båtens – eller rettere sagt – skrogets 100 års jubileum. Når båten igjen kommer på vannet i Storsjøen, vil den for øvrig ligge akkurat der den lå i åra fra 1914 til 1974.
Med flyttingen ble en kjent og kjær båt borte fra lenseområdet. Den vil bli savnet både som en viktig «visuell kulisse» i lenseområdet, men også som bruksbåt med en lett gjenkjennelig lyd. Likevel har båten komme hjem der den hørte hjemme i vel 60 år. Vi ønsker all hell og lykke og håper båten vil få et godt og langt liv i Storsjøen.»

Båten ligger på et plan som antakelig ellers ble brukt til transport av anleggsmaskiner, men på et provisorisk underlag av tre som er avpasset etter skroget, slik at fartøyet ikke skulle vippe på kjølen når bilen kjørte på svingete veg. Transporten er fotografert på en grusveg som er preget av vårløsning. Spedisjonsfirmaet P. Nielsen fra Oslo sto for transporten. Til høyre i bildet ligger ei teglsteinskirke, antakelig Ulleren kirke. Til venstre skimtes deler av en noe mindre lastebil.
«Varp I» eller «VB 51» ble bygd for Christiania Tømmerdirektion i 1914. Båten ble i hovedsak bruk på Glomma i nedre Solør og framfor alt på Storsjøen i Odalen. Den hadde sitt opplagssted på Bukkeneset i Nord-Odal. Der ble det opprinnelige overbygget, motoren og vinsjen fjernet like før jul i 1954 (jfr. SJF.1990-02242 og SJF.1990-02243). Så ble skroget kjørt til lenseanlegget ved Fetsund i Akershus, hvor båten ble ombygd og modernisert, før den altså ble sjøsatt ved Ullern ferjested påfølgende vår for fortsatt bruk i fløtinga i den nevnte regionen.
Lastebilen som ble brukt til dette transportoppdraget hadde registreringsnummer A-48547 og var en såkalt FWD SU-COE. Dette var en amerikansk lastebilmodell - chassisene ble produsert ved FWD-fabrikken i Clintonville i Wisconsin (USA). Derfra ble de sendt til Wilson Motor Bodies i Kitchener i Ontario (Kanada), hvor førerhuset og andre påbygningsarbeider ble utført. Slike kjøretøyer ble levert til den amerikanske hæren i 1940-åra, og en del av dem kom til Europa som ledd i det amerikanske gjenreisingsprogrammet etter 2. verdenskrig.

Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe de kalte «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette innebar at historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for arkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i forbindelse med avviklinga av fløtingsaktiviteten. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte størstedelen av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført.
