Rendalen er et bredt dalføre, som er omgitt av skog og fjell på andre kanter. Landskapet gav gode muligheter for flere primærnæringer. I hoveddalføret var det mye dyrket og dyrkbar jord, og i motsetning til folk i de frostutsatte nabobygdene i nord og øst kunne rendølene stort sett regne med å berge gode avlinger av bygg, havre, blandkorn og poteter. Rendalen hadde også store utmarksbeiter, som muliggjorde et betydelig husdyrbruk, og skoger med tømmer som kunne omsettes i kontante penger. Rendølene har i mange generasjoner vært opptatt av å videreutvikle dette næringsgrunnlaget. Alt på 1800-tallet så man det faktum at den flate elvesletta gjennom hoveddalføret stadig var oversvømt av flomvann fra Renavassdraget som en utfordring det gikk an å gjøre noe med. Kunne de få senket elveløpet, ville det tilgjengeliggjøre store våtmarksområder for dyrking og dermed for produksjon av kulturvekster som kunne fø en voksende befolkning. I midten av 1830-åra beskrev amtmannen (fylkesmannen) i Hedmark mulighetene i Rendalen slik: «… betydelige Strækninger af dyrkbar Jord venter i raa Tilstand allerede i Aarhundrer forgjæves paa Arbeidende Hænder for at bringes istand til at ernære en fordoblet Folkemængde.» Omkring 1880 startet de første forsøkene på å grøfte ut Hornsetmyrene i den ytre delen av dalføret for å nå slike mål. Det store prosjektet – å senke Hornsetstrømmen og Åkrestrømmen – virket imidlertid vel ressurskrevende. Idéen levde likevel videre. I slutten av 1920-åra pekte man på at senking av de to nevnte elvepartiene og Lomnessjøen ville gjøre det mulig å legge 8 – 10 000 dekar under plogen. Nå tok man kontakt med vassdragsdirektør Arthur Hugo-Sørensen (1875-1959). Dermed fikk rendølene hjelp til å utarbeide kalkyler for hva en senkingsprosess ville koste. Ekspertene antydet 332 000 1929-kroner. Dette beløpet forutsatte man i å reise i et spleiselag mellom staten, kommunene Ytre og Øvre Rendalen og de grunneierne som ville nyte godt av at Renavassdraget ble senket. Finansieringa av prosjektet ble utfordrende. Den økonomiske stagnasjonen i mellomkrigstida rammet både kommunene og næringsaktørene i jord- og skogbruket hardt. Dermed ble det vanskelig å få etablert et troverdig «distriktsbidrag». Da hjalp det lite at den store arbeidsledigheten utover i 1930-åra skapte finansieringsordninger som åpnet muligheter for tilskudd fra staten til «nødsarbeid». I slutten av 1930-åra skal det en del arbeidsledige ha hatt nødsarbeid i Åkrestrømmen. Høsten 1940 så en optimistisk NS-ordfører i Ytre Rendalen for seg at 60 ledige vegarbeidere kunne starte arbeidet i Hornsetstrømmen. Det kom sannsynligvis ikke noe særlig ut av dette initiativet.
Etter 2. verdenskrig ble det blåst nytt liv i elvesenkningsprosjektet. Utredningsarbeider viste at prosjektet ville komme 184 grunneiere til gode, og at 10 360 dekar jord på elveslettene i dalbotnen kunne bli dyrbare. Kravet fra myndighetene var at grunneierne sjøl skulle finansiere 70 prosent av den verdiøkningen eiendommene deres ville få. 118 ytterdøler og 30 øverdøler hadde sagt seg villige til å bidra. Mange av dem hadde nok tenkt seg at bidragene deres skulle bestå av praktisk egeninnsats. I etterkrigstida åpnet det seg imidlertid muligheter for å få utført arbeidet maskinelt med bulldosere og gravemaskiner. Ordførerne i de to rendalskommunene, Helge Berger (1891-1957) og Knut Wardenær Brøten (1893-1988), gikk inn for Vassdragsvesenets forslag om å la Oslo-firmaet A/S Entreprenør få oppdraget. Dermed ble det fart i sakene. I løpet av høsten 1946 og våren 1947 hadde man greid å mudre opp Åkrestrømmen såpass at vannspeilet i Lomnessjøen kunne senkes en halv meter. Dermed anså man at 3 000 dekar ny dyrkingsjord var vunnet. Sommeren 1948 startet arbeidet med å fjerne 40 000 kubikkmeter masse fra Hornsetstrømmen med sikte på å tørrlegge ytterligere cirka 7 000 dekar. Prosjektet ble fullført sommeren 1950. Det viste seg, som man hadde fryktet da maskinene ble satt inn i elvesenkningsarbeidene, at en del av grunneierne ikke hadde økonomi til å betale sine bidrag i kontante penger. Cirka 50 000 kroner i grunneierbidrag sto fortsatt ubetalte sommeren 1950. Dette ble løst ved at kommunene gikk inn og forskutterte kravene fra Vassdragsvesenet, samtidig som at de varslet om at de kunne komme til å søke å få dekt sine tilgodehavender hos enkelte grunneiere ved å overta jordeiendom. De neste store endringene i denne delen av Rena-vassdraget skjedde i andre halvdel av 1960-åra, da vann fra en dam i Glomma ved Barkald i Alvdal ble ført i en 29 kilometer lang tunnel gjennom fjellet til en kraftstasjon ved Otnes, med avløp til Renavassdraget.
Fra Åkrestrømmen - elveløpet mellom Lomnessjøen og Storsjøen i Rendalen. Fotografiet er tatt sommeren 1947, da det ble gjort betydelige arbeider for å senke elveløpet. Fotografen har antakelig stått på vegen langs vassdragets vestbredd og tatt bildet østover, på skrå over Åkrestrømmen. Bildet viser et stilleflytende vassdrag, der det var gravd og skyflet opp en god del sand og grus fra elveleiet til en voll langs elvebredden. Bakenfor skimtes et kulturlandskap med engarealer og et par små bruk, muligens Nordenget og Misterosen. Bakenfor dem igjen er det ei rand med skog og helt i bakgrunnen en fjellrygg.
Oppmudringsarbeidene som vises på dette fotografiet ble gjort for å realisere gamle idéer om å senke vannstanden i Renavassdraget, slik at om lag 10 000 dekar med tilstøtende våtmark kunne gjøres til dyrkbart jordbruksareal. Dette prosjektet er nærmere omtalt under fanen «Opplysninger».

Da fløtinga i Glomma ble avviklet i 1985 ble det ordnet slik at fellesfløtingsforeningens arkivsaker ble overlatt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å fortsette å oppbevare dem i det eksisterende arkivrommet ved Fellesfløtingsforeningens kontor på Fetsund. Amanuensis Øivind Vestheim fra Norsk Skogbruksmuseum veiledet lokale prosjektansatte, som startet ordning av materialet. Den daglige forvaltningen av arkivene er seinere overtatt av medarbeidere fra museet som ble etablert på Fetsund lenser i 1990. Fotosamlinga fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforening ble overført til daværende Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum. Materialet består av 72 album. Motivene er fra hele Glommavassdraget, samt fra ymse ekskursjonsreiser fløtingsfunksjonærene deltok i langs andre vassdrag. Museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad har reprodusert de fleste av opptakene i dette materialet og skrevet negativnummere i albumene han har utført repro fra. Det finnes også originalnegativer til en del av motivene. Disse skal være merket og ordnet i mapper etter at de kom til museet.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
