I nordenden av innsjøen Øyeren skulle det fløtingstømmeret som kom flytende på vassdraget fra de skogrike bygdene nordover i Solør og Østerdalen. Det som skulle til sagbruk eller treforedlingsbedrifter på Nedre Romerike skulle skilles fra det som skulle videre over innsjøen mot den nedre delen av Glomma for videre bearbeiding til trelast eller papir ved anlegg som lå nærmere vassdragets utløp i salt sjø og skipsforbindelser som innebar avsetningsmuligheter på fjernere markeder. Tømmeret ble sortert på grunnlag av påslåtte økseprofiler i yteveden på stokkene. Disse profilene identifiserte kjøperne av hver enkelt stokk. Sorteringa skjedde lenge ved Bingen i Sørum, men i forbindelse med utbygginga av jernbanen mellom Kristiania og Kongsvinger i 1860-åra ble sorteringslensa flyttet til Fetsund i Fet. På 1900-tallet ble stokker som skulle i samme retning «soppet» – presset sammen i bunter – som ble bundet sammen ved hjelp av vaiere og lenket sammen med tanke på videre buksering, innover mot Lillestrøm eller sørover innsjøen mot Glommas videre løp i retning Sarpsborg og Fredrikstad. Ettersom passasjene i deltaområdet like nedenfor lenseanlegget ved Fetsund var smale og svingete, var det grenser hvor store og brede partier som kunne slepes her. Følgelig ble soppene først buksert i smale remser – «nedlegg» – fra den nedre delen av lenseanlegget til et sted som hette Sofiedal i Enebakk, etter 1978 til Engelsvika eller Årnestangen litt lengre sør, hvor faren for å gå på grunn var mindre. På et av disse stedene ble det første nedlegget fortøyd, mens slepebåten hentet det neste. Turen fra lenseanlegget til Sofiedal tok to-tre timer. Når to nedlegg var kommet dit, ble de bundet sammen til ei «vending». Og når det var gjort kunne slepebåtmannskapet starte på den lange turen ned mot Glommas utløp fra sørenden av Øyeren. Med slepebåten M/B Mørkfos som trekkraft tok tolv til atten timer å tilbakelegge denne distansen. Når dette var unnagjort ble det slepene lagt ved Sandstangen på østsida av innsjøen eller ved Sleppetangen på vestsida, der lokale fløtere løsnet bindslene slik at stokkene kunne flyte løst videre nedover, hvor de passerte flere kraftverksdammer via tømmerrenner som ikke hadde kapasitet til å ta buntet virke. De største vendingene på Øyeren inneholdt om lag 200 000 stokker. Lengre nede, ved Nes og seinere ved Glennetangen eller Furuholmen, ble tømmeret på nytt sortert og «moset» med sikte på slepebåtbuksering inn det østre eller det vestre elveløpet, avhengig av hva som passet best for kjøperen.
Slepebåten Mørkfos ble bygd i 1912 ved Glommens mekaniske Verksted i Fredrikstad, der den hadde byggenummer 17. Oppdragsgiveren var Fredrikstad Tømmerdireksjon, som organiserte tømmerfløtinga i den nedre delen av Glommavassdraget. Den skal først ha gått lengre nede i vassdraget, men ble flyttet til Øyeren i 1936, i samband med at Fredrikstad Tømmerdireksjon og Christiania tømmerdireksjon fusjonerte og samorganiserte tømmertransporten i øvre og nedre del av Glommavassdraget under navnet Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. På Øyeren ble båten brukt til å slepe tømmer fra Fetsund ned til Sleppetangen, hvor «mosene» i slepene ble løst opp, slik at stokkene kunne gå fritt gjennom tømmertunnelene ved kraftverkene ved Solbergfoss, Kykkelsrud og Vamma, før tømmeret igjen ble «moset» ved Glennetangen lense for videre sleping, enten i det østre eller vestre løpet av Glomma. Mørkfos var, som de fleste slepebåtene i Glommavassdraget, opprinnelig en dampbåt. I 1939 ble dampkjelen ombygd slik at man kunne begynne å fyre med olje i stedet for kol og ved. I 1953 ble dampmaskinen fjernet og erstattet av en tresylindret dieselmotor fra den anerkjente leverandøren Wickmann motorfabrikk AS på Bømlo i Hordaland. Samtidig fikk den også nytt styrhus. Overgangen fra damp- til dieseldrift betydde at mannskapet, og dermed driftskostnadene, kunne reduseres betydelig. Som dampbåt hadde Mørkfos et mannskap på sju: Skipper, maskinist, fyrbøter, tre dekksmenn og kokke. Med dieselmotoren kunne bemanninga reduseres til fire, også fordi kokka, Solveig Johansen, gjorde dekksmanns jobb når hun ikke var opptatt i byssa. Wickmann-motoren ble erstattet av en MWM-motor (fra Motorenwerke Mannheim i den tyske delstaten Baden-Württemberg) i 1966, og denne motoren har Mørkfos fortsatt. Etter at fløtinga opphørte ble fartøyet i 1994 overtatt av entusiaster som har organisert seg under navnet «Mørkfos venner». Denne organisasjonen tilbyr sommerturer på Øyeren i samarbeid med fløtingsmuseet ved Fetsund lenser. Riksantikvarens seksjon for fartøyvern har støttet restaurering av MB Mørkfos.

Vi ser slepelina, en lang vaier som ble brukt til å dra et slep med tømmer som var «soppet» (buntet) og bundet sammen sørover innsjøen. Sjølve slepet ser vi ikke på dette fotografiet, for det var viktig med en viss avstand mellom «propellvannet», det opprørte vannet bak båten og tømmeret. Ble avstanden for kort ville strømmen fra propellene øve for kraftig press på tømmeret i gal retning. Fotografiet er tatt på den øvre delen av slepestrekningen, i deltaområdet nedenfor lenseanlegget. Her var det grunt farvann, og båten og slepene måtte følge en meandrerende djupål og ha bistand fra den noe mindre slepebåten Rauma, som bisto med bukseringa av den bakre enden av slepet. Dette var et vanskelig «slalåmløp» som tok om lag fire timer. Skipperne på båtene hadde telefonforbindelse. Slik arbeidet man seg langsomt og forsiktig ned til Sofiedal, et lite bruk på Øyerens vestside, like ved grensa mellom Rælingen og Enebakk kommuner i Akershus. Herfra kunne Mørkfos aleine gå videre nedover mot Sleppetangen og Glommas videre løp. På denne strekningen kunne Mørkfos trekke to slep av den størrelsen det var mulig å få med ned gjennom deltaområdet.
I begynnelsen av 1980-åra ble det klart at det gikk mot slutten med tømmerfløtinga i Glomma. Derfor fikk historikeren Øivind Vestheim, som ble ansatt som amanuensis ved Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i 1984, dokumentasjon av denne virksomheten som en av sine primæroppgaver. Vestheim gjorde mange reiser langs vassdraget, der han snakket med fløtere og dokumenterte ved hjelp av notatblokk og diktafon. Han hadde også med seg museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad på flere av turene. Vestheims dokumentasjonsarbeid dreide seg også om de materielle levningene etter fløtingsvirksomheten som snart skulle opphøre. Han ble blant annet sentral i første fase av bevaringa av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiver ved Fetsund lenser. Arkivet ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det ligge på Fetsund, hvor Vestheim sammen med lokale engasjementsmedarbeidere foretok en første ordning. Den daglige forvaltningen av Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv er seinere overlatt til fløtermuseet ved Fetsund lenser. I 1985 omtalte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum Vestheims arbeid som «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette siste driftsåret til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening dokumenterte Vestheim og Ljøstad fløting i Åmot i Østerdalen, ved Norsfossen i Solør, ved Bingen og på Øyeren i Akershus, og ved Sleppetangen, Solbergfoss, Vamma, Glennetangen og Eidet i Østfold. For å få gode oversiktsbilder av lensesystemer og tømmersleping leide museet fly. Sluttproduktet fra Vestheims arbeid med Glomma-fløtinga ble boka «Fløting gjennom århundrer – fløtingas historie i Glomma- og Mjøsvassdraget», som ble utgitt som Norsk Skogbruksmuseums særpublikasjon nr. 13 i 1998.
