Ein av dei kaldaste vintrane i manns minne var vinteren 1941-42. Verdskrigen hadde kome til Odda, og det var knapt med varer og brensel. Rett over jul 1941 fraus Sørfjorden til mellom Odda og Lofthus. Varer og folk som elles kom med båt til Odda, måtte no ta buss frå Lofthus.
