- Idrettsutøvarar i Odda hadde oppnådd fine resultater i mange år, men mangla gode tilhøve å trena på. Ingeniør Rosengren på Odda Smelteverk arbeidde iherdig for å få til ein kommunal idrettsplass, og i 1936 fekk Odda kommune kjøpa den ynskte tomta på Eidesmoen for 60 000 kr. I april/mai 1936 starta arbeidet med å planera ut området. Tretti mann fordelt på seks lag transporterte vekk skjeringsmassar, rydda skog, laga dreneringsgrøft og planerte ut om lag ei 30 mål stor tomt. Planen var at idrettsbana med internasjonale mål - 400m løpebane- og to tennisbanar skulle vera ferdige til bruk sommaren 1937. Bygningar til sanitæranlegg, kontor, kafé og tribunar låg i planane. Til banedekke bruka dei generatorslagg frå smelteverket. Dette vart harpa og lagt i eit 10 cm tjukt lag med det grovaste slagget nedst, det finaste øvst. Dette var eit nytt og eineståande banedekke. Prøvar vart send til ekspertar i Oslo til undersøking, og det hausta mykje lovord. Arbeidet med å legge grasmatte starta i 1953, og var ikkje ferdig før i 1955, med offisiell opning 24. juli.
