Mot slutten av 1800-tallet, etter at kobberverket i Sulitjelma var satt i drift, oppsto det en skjerpefeber i Nord-Norge. Det ble innmeldt tusenvis av malmfunn fra de tre nordligste fylkene, og særlig mange fra Nordland. I perioden fra 1891 til 1904 ble det registrert 32 000 ertsfunn i dette fylket. De fleste funnstedene viste seg å være verdiløse, men over 4 000 lokaliteter ble mutet med fristbevillinger med sikte på kommersiell utnytting. I mange tilfeller ble dette antakelig bare gjort for å sikre seg muligheter, og for å blokkere andres muligheter. Enkelte forekomster ble det knyttet store forhåpninger til. I amtmann Rasmus Theisens femårsberetning om tilstanden i Nordland i perioden 1896-1900 finner vi følgende optimistiske rapport om utsiktene til utvikling av bergverksindustri i Dunderdlandsdalen:
«I Dunderlandsdalen i Mo fandt i Femaaret omfattende Undersøgelser Sted af de der optrædende fra 1825 kjendte forekomster af Jernmalme for at konstatere Muligheden af deres økonomiske Udnyttelse. I dette Arbeide deltog Geologer og praktiske Bergmænd, der studerede Forekomsterne opover Dalen ligetil Stormdalen, omkring Langvandet, og opover Rødvasdalen til under Svartisen. Undersøgelserne bekostedes af Konsul N. Persson i Helsingborg, der hertil anvendte betydelige Kapitaler. Udsigterne til lønnende Drift paa disse i Grunden fattige Forekomster af Jernmalm var dog smaa, indtil det lykkedes at faa den bekjendte Edison interesseret i dem. Som bekjendt, er nu under Forberedelse en Drift i disse Trakter, som den hele Verden følger meg største Interesse. Beskrivelsen af denne hører imidlertid ikke denne Femaarsperiode til.
Den nevnte konsulen, som eide gruvevirksomheten i Sulitjelma, hadde leid den svenske geologen Alfred Hasselbom med en hærskare av assistenter til å ta prøver og utrede driftsmuligheter. I Dunderlandsdalen ble det gjort funn ved Dunderland, Lilleåli, Ørtfjellmo, Ørtvatn, Vesteråli og Bjørnhei. Mye av jernglimmerskiferen var imidlertid forholdsvis fattig. Ekspertene mente likevel at de kunne drive ut 88, 7 millioner tonn malm med en jerngehalt på 35, 7 til 40 prosent fra de nevnte feltene. For å gjøre det ble det investert 40 millioner kroner – et enormt beløp tidlig på 1900-tallet – i å bygge et industrianlegg som skulle utnytte verdiene. Denne satsinga var det selskapet Dunderland Iron Ore Company (dannet i 1902) i samarbeid med «The Edison Ore Milling Syndicate» som sto bak. Topografen Amund Helland, som også var geolog, beskrev det slik i «Topografisk-statistisk beskrivelse over Nordlands Amt» (bind II) fra 1908:
«For nu at øge gehalten af den fattige malm, skal denne skilles fra det uholdige berg, hvilket sker påaa den maade, at malmen knuses fint, og magneter skiller malmen fra det uholdige. Den knuste malm falder som en regn, og jernmalmen trækkes da ind til magneten, ikke saaledes at den fæstner sig til magneten, men saaledes at malmkornene under faldet afbøies til siden ind mod magneten og flader i et rum for sig. Endvidere fjernes en del af den fosforholdige apatit, og endelig skal den knuste malm formes og brændes, saa den bliver som en mursten eller brikket.
Til dette øiemed er opført en række bygninger af jern og bølgeblik: Knusehus (cruscher house), tørrehus (dryer house) forrådshus (rock stock house), finknusehus (grinding house), sigtehus (screen house), blæsehus no. 1 (blower house nr. 1), hus til sortering av magnetjernsten (magnetite separator house), hus til sortering av jernglimmer (hermatit house), blæsehus no. 2 (blower house nr. 2), forraadshus for sortert malm (consentrate house), jernbanen (rail), briketterings- og blandingsplans (briquetting and mixing plant), ovne (furnaces) og kai.
Navnene paa disse bygninger vil maaske kunne give et begreb om processen. Først skal malmen knuses i knusehuset, saa skal den tørres i tørrehuset, saa skal den finknuses, saa sigtes, derpaa skal en del berg blæses bort i blæsehuset, saa falder den forbi magneter, der uddrager den magnetiske jernmalm, derpaa falder den atter forbi magneter, der udskiller jernglandsen, saaskal den atter udsættes for vind; saa føres den fra Storsforshei paa den 17 km lange bane til Guldsmedviken, hvor den formes og brændes.
Malmen brydes for tiden ved Ørtvatn, og indtil sommeren 1907 er der brudt i alt 120 000 tons, men det store anlæg er, som nævnt, endnu ikke i ordentlig drift.
Malmen lastes paa store vogne ved hjælp av dampskuffer (steamshowels), som kan løfte 15 tons, og vognene, som rummer 10 ½ ton, drages op i høiden ved det store knusehus. Her falder den ned paa et stort valsepar, 7 engelske fot lange og 7 fot brede; hver valse veier 50 tons og drives av hver sin dampmaskine; valserne gjør 160 omdreininger i minuttet. Fra de store valser falder malmen paa 3 mindre, men dog svære valser, 5 fod i diameter og 3 fod lange, hvorpaa malmen atter fordeles paa 2 par valser.
Fra knusehuset føres malmen paa bælter uden ende op til tørrehuset. Her er øverst sigter, der udskiller alt det, som er mere end 1 ½ tomme i diameter, hvilket gaar tilbage til valserne. Det finere knuste glider ned paa plader i tørrehuset, hvor der fyres med stenkul. Derfra kommer det i et forraadshus.
Derefter skal malmen knuses finere, og dette sker i finknusehuset, hvor der er 4 par valser, 3 fod i diameter og 8 tommer brede. Til denne finknusning behøves stor kraft, til hvert valsepar 350 hestekræfter.
Derefter kommer malmen til sigtehuset, og her sigtes ud alt det, som er over ¼ mm. i diameter. Det, som er grovere, gaar tilbage til finknusehuset.
Derefter kommer malmen i blæsehus no. 1; her udsættes den for en luftstrøm, frembragt ved en ventilator, der blæser paa den faldende malm, saaledes at en del af den lettere, mere apatitholdige eller fosforholdige sten fjernes fra den tyngre malm. Derefter kommer malmen til den bygning, hvor den mere magnetiske malm, magnetjernstenen, udskilles. Her er 4 rækker magneter, hvert med 35 sæt og i hvert sæt er 16 enkelte magneter, ialt 1 540 magneter.
Derefter kommer det, som ikke er udskilt, til den bygning, hvor den mindre magnetiske malm, jernglimmermalmen, hematiten, skal udskilles. Her er 4 rækker magneter, hvert paa 60 sæt og hvert sæt paa 20 enkelte magneter, i alt 4 800 magneter.
Derefter kommer malmen ind til blæsehus no. 2, hvor man atter udskiller endel uholdigt og fosforsyreholdigt gods ved en luftstrøm, ligesom i det første blæsehus, hvorefter malmen kommer i oplagshuset for den sorterede malm.
Saa føres den paa jernbanen til Gudsmedvigen. Her kommer den i fyldkasser og tappes gjennem render med snekkeskruer, idet den fugtes, og kommer saa i brikketpressen, hvor den presses til briketter, som er 3, 5 og 6 engelske tommer høie, brede og lange; i vogne, som gaar i kanaler, kommer de ind i briketteringsovnen, som ophedes med genetratorgas (Grøndals system). En saadan ovn er 10, 5 m. bred og 52 m. lang. Af saadanne ovne er 2 færdige, men der skal blive 6.
Til knusning og separation er der 11 dampmaskiner paa tilsammen 4 000 hestekrefter. I 1903 var man færdig med en slem skjæring gjennem morenebanken ved Guldsmedviken, saaledes at banen kunde befares med lokomotiv. »
Utførselen av briketter fra Dunderland tok til i 1907. Allerede året etter måtte virksomheten, som hadde om lag 1 000 ansatte, innstilles. I 1913 gikk tyske Alfred Krupp inn i jernverket med ny kapital, og selskapet skiftet navn til «New Dunderland Iron Ore Company». Det nye selskapet la om produksjonsteknologien fra den beskrevne magnetbehandlinga til en svensk våtsepareringsmetode i et nytt foredlingsverk ved Gullsmedvik. Virksomheten kom imidlertid ikke i gang så lenge det på grunn av 1. verdenskrig var vanskelig å få tak i kol til driften. Det var imidlertid to driftsperioder i mellomkrigstida. I 1938 gikk et engelsk selskap inn med kapital i selskapet. Virksomheten startet imidlertid opp under 2. verdenskrig. Norsk Jernverk overtok eierinteressene i 1947.

Opp mot og gjennom den øvre delen av bygningen fører et skråplan med skinnegang, antakelig en transportveg for vogner med malm til knuseverket.
Dette fotografiet er tatt i samband med den industribygginga selskapet Dunderland Iron Ore Company Ltd. sto bak tidlig på 1900-tallet. Selskapet ble organisert i 1902 med sikte på å utnytte seks malmfunn i Dunderlandsdalen gjennom magnetseparering av forholdsvis fattig, finknust malm og påfølgende produksjon av jernbriketter. Produksjonen kom i gang i 1907, men den var ikke økonomisk bærekraftig og ble følgelig avviklet alt i 1908. Virksomheten ble gjenopptatt seinere med annen teknologi. En orientering om den tidlige fasen i virksomhetens historie finnes under fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet er hentet fra et arkiv der bildene i hovedsak er tatt av medarbeidere fra Skogdirektørens kontor (senere Direktoratet for statens skoger) i samband med befaringsreiser i forvaltningsdistriktene. Negativsamlinga, med samme nummerering, er også overlatt til museet, men mye mangler og noe er dårlig bevart, blant annet fordi opptakene i hovedsak er gjort på nitratfilm. Dette bildet har ikke bevart originalnegativ. Det fotografiske arkivet etter det statlige skogtilsynet inneholder også et større antall diaskopier, samt originale positivkopier utenfor katalogsystemet, men med samme originalnummerering fra DSS. Samlinga omfatter dessuten et betydelig antall nyere positivkopier som er registrert på emne og person hos DSS, uten egne nummer.
