ADDITIONAL
Most people from Nordfjord hail from generations of smallholders who, in order to secure sufficient income, were forced to take up an additional trade. Many men left the village during the winter season to do such work, while the women were running the farms.
For a long time, fishing was the most important additional trade in many Nordfjord villages. Rural crafts – c arpentry and boat building, as well as wood-, metal- and leatherworking – were also important sources of income. Typical women's trades were spinning, weaving and sewing.
From the end of the 19th century, tourism became important in our region, with hotel operations and shuttle services being central trades.
Over time, several additional trades developed into main trades. There were also farmers who started working for the public or private sector instead of doing rural crafts or fishing.
In today’s society, the motivation to pursue an additional trade often comes down to a wish to use one’s knowledge, abilities and extra time or access to special resources.
The basic exhibition "ATTÅT" opened at Nordfjord Folkemuseum in the summer of 2023. The exhibition will be on display for several years. We dare to promise you that the exhibition is worth the visit. Welcome!
