Maleriet var en gave til givers bestemor ved hennes bryllup 21. september 1914. Marie Hestmann (f. Fritsvold 1893) var niesen til Kristian Skolmen. Hun giftet seg i 1914 med Robert Petter Olai Hestmann (f. 1876) i Fagerborg kirke i Kristiania (Oslo). Maleriet fulgte henne til prestegårdene på Gimsøy (1914-16), Tjøtta (1916-1933), Ørland (1933-37) og hennes «enkesete» Professor Brochs gt. 3, Trondheim, 1937 til hennes død i 1979.
Kristian Skolmen (1863-1946) ble i 1882 utdannet lærer og fikk i 1884 jobb ved Snipstadengen skole på Østre Toten. Her møtte han sin framtidige kone Marie Pålsdatter Fritsvold. De giftet seg i 1888 og flyttet til Kongsberg, hvor Skolmen hadde fått lærerstilling ved Nymoen skole. I 1892 fullførte Skolmen et kurs for «uddannelse af Lærere og Lærerinder i Tegning for Folkeskolen og Middelskolen» på Den Kongelig norske Kunst- og Haandverksskole i Christiania (i dag Statens håndverks- og kunstindustriskole). Senere hadde han selv mange elever i maling og tegning.
I 1895 etablerte han Kongsberg Tekniske Aftenskole sammen med lærer Ole Ulrichsen Hoff og ingeniør Christian Jørgensen. Han underviste klasser fram til han tok avskjed i 1928. Har var også aktiv i med mange aktiviteter og arrangementer utenom skolen. Han startet kor og musikkforeninger, og sammen med overlærer Petter Caspar Busengdal etablerte de Kongsberg Guttemusikkorps i 1911.
Skolmen produserte malerier fra 1882 til 1946. Han malte også på f.eks. dørfelter, kubbestoler, skap med mer. I 1896 ble han antatt på Statens høstutstilling med et "Aaklædemønster" av folkevisen «Villemann og Magnhild».
Han var lærer på Kongsberg i mer enn 40 år, både ved Nymoen skole, Middelskolen og gamle Vestsiden skole. I 1928 gikk han av med pensjon.
