Tidlige forskere på elektrisiteten kunne skape høyvolts elektriske strømmer, men de hadde ingen metoder for å lagre elektrisiteten. Midt på 1700-tallet ble kondensatoren utviklet i form av en Leydenflaske. Den var oppkalt etter universitetet i Leyden i Nederland der mange eksperimenter og publikasjoner om Leydenflaskene ble utført. Med en Leydenflaske kunne forskeren lagre en elektrisk ladning og ta den med for å bruke den et annet sted.
Midt på 1800-tallet observerte Lord Kelvin at elektriske utladninger fra Leydenflasken gjennom en induktor var oscillerende. Dette og senere arbeid av Mahlon Loomis, James Clerk Maxwell og Nikola Tesla førte til utviklingen av radio, fjernsyn og moderne kommunikasjonsmidler. I dag vet vi at Benjamin Franklins tidlige eksperimenter med Leydenflasker faktisk produserte radiobølger, men det var det ingen som kunne høre.
