Christopher Hansteen, f. 26/9-1784 i Oslo, d. 15/4-1873 i Oslo.
Hansteen studerte jus fra1802 i København, men ble interessert i naturfagene da han ble kjent med fysikeren H.C. Ørsted. Ernærte seg som privatlærer inntil han ble lærer ved latinskolen i
Frederiksborg (Hillerød ved København), 1806-14. Han vant en prisoppgave for et arbeid om jordmagnetismen 1811, ble 1813 ansatt som lærer i anvendt matematikk ved det nye universitet i
Christiania, tiltrådte 1814, ble utnevnt til professor (i astronomi og anvendt matematikk) 1816. Fritatt for forelesningsplikt 1856, avskjed av helsegrunner 1861 (77 år gammel). Var også lærer i
matematikk ved den Militære Høyskole (som også utdannet ingeniører), fra 1826 til 1849.
Han var meget produktiv, skrev om magnetisme, nordlys, meteorologi, astronomi, mekanikk osv. Fikk bygget opp et astronomisk, senere også et geomagnetisk observatorium i Oslo. Var særlig
kjent internasjonalt for sine arbeider om Jordens magnetfelt, som han studerte på en lengre ekspedisjon til Sibir 1828-30. Han samlet data om jordmagnetisme fra forskere over hele Europa,
bearbeidet dem og utviklet sin egen teori for jordmagnetismen og publiserte det første pålitelige kart over den. "Hansteens theories were ultimately disproved by Gauss in 1839, but Gauss
credited Hansteen with influencing his thinking" i følge Encyclopaedia Britannica. Han underviste i mekanikk, astronomi og spesielt i jordmagnetisme. Skrev lærebøker i plangeometri og i
mekanikk. Han oppfattet seg selv mer som fysiker og astronom enn som matematiker, og forsøkte flere ganger å få opprettet en egen stilling med ansvar for underevisningen i anvendt
matematikk.
Hansteen var samfunnsmesig meget aktiv, en av de sentrale skikkelser ved universitetet, direktør for Geografisk Oppmåling i 55 år (1817-73), redaktør av almanakken 1815-62, i direksjonen iSelskabet til Norges Vel, i en komité for reformasjon av landets skolevesen, i tilsynskomitéen for mål og vekt (nåværende justervesen), og mye annet. Faderlig venn av Abel. Far av
malerinnen og kvinnesakskvinnen Aasta H. Bror av memoarforfatterinnen Conradine Dunker.
