I området øst for Eikeren og Fiskumvannet, sør for Drammensdalføret og nord for Sande ligger et 250 000 dekar stort skogområde, som i dag ligger tett innpå bymessig bebygde strøk. Her er det mye granskog, men også litt furu der det er skrinnere mark, og naturligvis en del innslag av lauvtrær, som bjørk, rogn, gråor, osp og selje. Skogene var fra gammelt av fordelt på mange eiendommer, har seinere vært gjenstand for ytterligere oppdelinger, men også ambisjoner om å samle gamle teiger i større komplekser.
Skogene i dette området la fra gammelt av innenfor cirkumferensene til Eidsfoss verk og Konnerudverket. Ved Eidsfoss verk ble det produsert jern fra 1697 til 1875. Konnerudverket – i eldre arkivmateriale omtalt som «Det Jarlsbergske Sølvholdige Blye- og Kobberværk» – ble satt i drift i 1731 og nedlagt i 1777. Her var det sølvholdig bly og kobber som var hovedproduktene. Innenfor cirkumferensen hadde grunneierne plikt til å levere trekol og lakterved til de nevnte bergverksforetakene.
Også i vår tid er området delt i mange skogeiendommer. De fleste er gardsskoger med arealer opptil 4-500 dekar, noen få er større. Den aller største tilhører A/S Selvik Bruk og er på 64 000 dekar. Denne eiendommen ligger samlet i grenselandet mellom to kommuner – Sande i Vestfold og Drammen i Buskerud. Dette eiendomskomplekset er bygd opp gjennom lang tid, i begynnelsen med trelasthandlere i Drammen som sentrale interessenter. En sentral aktør i denne eiendomsutviklinga var juristen og forstkandidaten Willem Stibolt, som arvet deler av skogen gjennom morsslekta si, Kiær-familien. Stibolts erklærte mål var «… at samle al den skog som sognet til Bremsa, Konnerud og Klevjer Elv, et arbeide som paagik fra 1886 til 1910». Stibolt etablerte også Sande tresliperi etter amerikanske forbilder på eiendommen Selvik, som kom i drift fra 1901. I likhet med tidligere industrigründere i området hadde Stibolt undervurdert behovet for vannkraft og for økonomiske ressurser som skulle til for å få virksomheten fullfinansiert. Skogkomplekset i daværende Skoger og Sande ble samlet i et eget selskap under navnet A/S Selvik Bruk. Eiendommen ble et panteobjekt, som i 1912 ble overtatt av Centralbanken. Banken drev eiendommen fra et hovedkontor på garden Andorsrud. Også banken fikk etter hvert økonomiske problemer. Tobakkshandler Johan H. Andresen kjøpte skogen i 1936, og gjorde et supplerende skogkjøp i 1938. Siden den gangen har A/S Selvik bruk vært i Andresen-familiens eie, og eiendommen har vært drevet videre under ledelse av en forstmester med base på Andorsrud.
Tømmeret og vassdragene har, som antydet, vært sentrale i næringsaktivitetene i dette området gjennom flere hundrede år. Elvene og bekkene har vært viktige, både som kraftkilder og transportårer. Mangeårig forstmester i Selvig Bruk, Sverre Skurdal, har blant annet skrevet følgende om tømmerfløtinga på eiendommen og i det vassdraget dette kartet viser:
«Fløtning i distriktet er meget gammel. … Ingen vet i dag når fløting første gang ble foretatt i Vestskogene, men antagelig er denne transportmåte benyttet flere hundrede år tilbake i tiden. Rester av gamle tredammer har vært å se til det siste.
Elvene Bremsa og Gryta (Klevjerelven) var begge farlige å fløte, men helst gikk det godt. En og annen ble ført av gårde med strømdraget. «Ble du blaut, far?» sa Thomas, da gammel’n krøp på land etter en nifs tur i elva. «Du er den dummeste gutt i hele Skandinavien!» svarte faren.
Fra gammelt av ble tømmer tatt opp ved utløpet av Sandeelva, hengslet [lensa] Hersgården, for skipning bl. a. til England, hvor W. Stibolt hadde gode kontakter med treforedlingsbedrifter. Tømmer ble også «moset» (buntet) og slept videre sjøverts til Sande Tresliperi. En periode ble tømmer også tatt på land ved Bølumøra og Røllesøra, hvor det var vedhoggeri, sagbruk og eget jernbanespor for opplasting av tømmer og trelast på jernbanen.
En egen fløtingsforening ble dannet for vassdraget, og Selvik Bruk fikk utført oppmåling og kartlegging av Sandeelva med tilløpene Gryta og Bremsa [jfr. kartsamlinga dette registreringsobjektet er en del av]. Skådammer til vern av elvebreddene og for å hindre at tømmeret fløt inn og satte seg fast mellom busker og trær, ble bygget i stort omfang. De gamle steindammene ble påbygget slik at magasinene ble større og nye ble bygget, bl. a. Bomannsdammen ved Store Bergvann. Gjennom en bergrygg ved Løkmyr ble en kort tunnel (Løkmyrkanalen) sprengt ut i 1917. Vann kunne derved overføres til Store Bergvann. Conrad Fjeld, som overtok bestyrelse av skogene etter sin far Kristian Fjeld, fortalte at Centralbanken i årene 1916-17 kostet på ¾ mill. kroner på utbedring av elveløp og demninger. Utretting av elveløp forekom også, f. eks. på Utenga. I årene fra århundreskiftet og fram til 1920 ble mange mindre landstriper og arealer langs elva innkjøpt for å hindre de årlig tilbakevendende krav om erstatning for skader ved fløtingen. Langs vassdraget var det strukket telefontråder festet til isolatorer skrudd inn i trær. Fløterbasen kunne så har raskt samband til sine damvoktere i de forskjellige damvokterhytter. Vi har under hogst hatt sporadisk kontakt med innvokste isolatorer nesten frem til i dag. Den siste fløtningen ble gjort i Grytelva i 1948. 10 år før, i 1938 var fløtningskvantumet oppe i 12 000 kubikkmeter.»
