Karl Theodor Finckelsen ble født i Stavanger og gikk i urmakerlære hos urmaker Sunde. Senere ble det svennevandring til Tyskland og Sverige, før han åpnet egen forretning i Bergen. Etter 1900 begynte han å importere tyske elektriske ur av merket Siemens Schuckert, spesielt til bruk som hovedur i offentlige bygg og som stemplingsur.
Han sluttet med slike ur etter 1. verdenskrig.Da 2. verdenskrig var slutt og urimporten begrenset, så firmaet igjen en nisje i denne bransjen. Firmaet var nå ledet av sønnen Leif. Salget av mønstings-, kalkulasjons-, vaktkontrollur og programapparater gikk så bra at de ble tilbudt agenturet for IBM, også også utenfor landets grenser. Da IBM la ned denne virksomheten i 1964, overtok firmaet som representanter for Simplex Time Recorder.
Firmaet Simplex Finckelsen A/S har agenturet i dag.
