I gamle Fåberg prestegjeld møter elva Gudbrandsdalslågen innsjøen Mjøsa. Lågen er cirka 20 mil lang og har et nedbørsfelt på om lag 11 500 kvadratkilometer. I bygdene langs Lågen og dette hovedvassdragets mange sideløp vokste det skog, og tømmer fra disse skogene var et produkt bøndene i Gudbrandsdalen kunne omsette i klingende mynt, bare de fikk det fram til et betalingsvillig marked. Dette var lenge en vanskelig oppgave, for markedet lå lenge langt unna, i mer kystnære strøk, og tømmeret var tungt. Skogeierne måtte satse på at oppdriften i vannet skulle bære det mot sagbruk og etter hvert også papirfabrikker. I elvene gav strømmen i det rennende vannet framdrift, over innsjøer med mer stillestående vannspeil var en mer avhengig av vind, og etter hvert av motorfartøyer. Og mens tømmerstokkene kunne flyte fritt i elvene var det mer hensiktsmessig å samle dem i flåter eller bunter – i dette området kalt «sopper» – når det skulle bukseres over innsjøer og vann. Der betydelige fløtingselver rant ut i innsjøene ble det derfor etablert lenseanlegg, hvor løstømmeret ble samlet, sortert og ordnet for buksering over mer stillestående vannspeil i flåter, såkalte ringbommer eller sopper. Det nevnte området i Fåberg – mellom Vingnes på vestsida av vassdraget og det som etter hvert skulle bli Lillehammer by – var et slikt lensested. Fra gammelt av var det ofte grunneierne på slike steder som så muligheter for å skaffe seg inntekter ved å etablere lenser og ta avgifter av det tømmeret som ble ekspedert fra disse lensanleggene. På 1700-tallet ser det ut til at det var brukerne på Trosset-gardene som drev lensa ved utløpet av Lågen. Fra midten av 1800-tallet overtok kapitalsterke kjøpmenn i den nyanlagte kjøpstaden Lillehammer lensene og de inntektsmulighetene de representerte. Disse aktørene tok seg godt betalt, noe vi må regne med at både skogeierne i bygdene ovenfor og tømmerkjøperne ved den nedenforliggende delen av vassdraget var misfornøyde med, for fløtinga nedover Gudbrandsdalen og videre over Mjøsa var kostbar, og det påvirket tømmerets markedsverdi.
1909 ble et merkeår for tømmerfløtinga i denne regionen. Da ble det vedtatt lover for en fellesfløtingsforening som skulle samordne fløtinga for elva Ottas sammenløp med Lågen i Sel kommune og nedover. Samtidig inngikk Christiania Tømmerdirektion, som organiserte virkestransporten videre nedover mot Øyeren på Nedre Romerike, avtale om å overta lensedriften ved Lågens utløp i Mjøsa, i første omgang i 15 år, men med mulighet for forlengelse av avtalen. Tømmerdirektionen investerte stort i lenseanlegget, og fikk blant annet bygd et digert «soppeapparat» - en buntemaskin – og et vifteformet sorteringsanlegg, som gjorde det enklere å sortere det tømmeret som skulle til sagbruk og treforedlingsbedrifter i Mjøsregionen fra det som skulle videre nedover Vorma og Glomma. De private eierne hadde neppe finansiell styrke til å løse inn og drifte et slikt anlegg, så i 1930 solgte de rettighetene sine til Christiania Tømmerdirektion, som gjennom en fusjon med Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion seks-sju år seinere ble til Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Denne organisasjonen fortsatte å drive Lillehammer lense inntil fløtinga i Lågen opphørte i 1969.
Onsdag 12. mai 1909 kunne avisa «Lillehammer Tilskuer» melde følgende:
«Som vi allerede før har meddelt, har Kristiania Tømmerdirektion besluttet at anskaffe to Soppeapparater i Mjøsen. Det ene blir permanent stationeret ved Lillehammer Lændse, det andet er transportabelt. Soppemaskinen ved Lændsen er nu paa det nærmeste færdig.
Den bestaar af to 64 Meter lange flydende Broer, der holdes sammen af to 12 M. lange Tverbroer. Paa den ene Langside ligger Maskinen. Hele Apparatet ligger paa langs i Strømretningen. Tømmeret kommer drivende ind over den øvre Ende, og føres af Strømmen ned mod to flere Meter dybe Arme, der stikker ned fra den nederste Tverbro. Her holdes det da op, og det slig, at Stokkene blir liggende paa tvers imellem begge Langbroer. Naar hele Rummet er fyldt trækkes en forskyvelig Bro, der ogsaa er forsynet med nedstaaende Arme, nedover af Maskinen, og derved presses Tømmeret sammen i en flere Meter dyb Sop. Der slaaes Staaltraadbaand om, og Soppen er færdig. Armene paa den nederste Tverbro løftes op og Soppen flyder ud. Saa begyndes der igjen paa samme Maade. …»
Det var fortsatt denne lensa som var i drift da dette fotografiet ble tatt. Anlegget ble noe modernisert i slutten av 1950-åra, og var i drift til og med 1969-sesongen.
Fra soppeapparatet ved Lillehammer lense, der fløtingsvirke fra Gudbrandsdalslågen og dens sideelver, ble «soppet» - buntet - med sikte på videre buksering sørover Mjøsa. Dette anlegget ble produsert av Hamar jernstøperi i 1909, etter et prinsipp som var utviiklet av fløtingsformann Arnt Andersen Svartedal (1869-1909), da det ble klart at bunting av fløtingstømmer med håndmakt ikke lenger var effektivt nok til å kunne ta unna stadig voksende tømmermengder. Her - bak fotografen - ble tømmeret først sortert etter påslåtte tømmermerker. Deretter ble det sorterte virket, merkekategori for merkekategori, sluppet inn i en innlenset kanal der den svake strømmen i elva drev det langsomt nedover mot et endebasseng. Denne soppeapparattypen besto av to flåteganger eller pongtonger som ved Lillehammer lense var 64 meter lange. De ble montert parallelt med en fast innbyrdes avstand av 12 meter lange tverrbruer. I den ytre enden av pongtongene var det montert ei slags bru med fangarmer, «sverd», som stakk langt ned i vannet. I den andre enden var det ei bevegelig bru, som ellers hadde samme form og egenskaper som den faste. Lensemannskapene ledet fløtingstømmer, på tvers av strømretningen, inn i bassenget mellom pongtongene. Deretter ble sverdene på den bevegelige brua senket, og så ble den kjørt med motorkraft mot den faste. På denne måten ble tømmeret ble presset sammen i en bunt, som det kunne slås en kjetting eller en stålvaier rundt. Nedenfor anlegget ble soppene - buntene - bundet sammen til slep, som skulle bukseres sørover Mjøsa.
I bakgrunnen ser vi Vingnesbrua, vegforbindelsen på tvers av vassdraget, som sto ferdig i 1934, tre år før dette fotografiet ble tatt.
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for arkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble i forbindelse med avviklinga av fløtinga overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte størstedelen av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
