Dette fotografiet ble tatt under arbeidet med å legge ut den såkalte Prestegardslensa i fra Glommas østre bredd i 1984. Dette var en konstruksjon som i Elverum ble kalt ei «sløngelense», men som i fløtingslitteraturen oftest betegnes som «ledelense» eller «stryklense». Slike lenser besto av sammenlenkete stokker, som skulle flyte i vannskorpa og dermed lede løstømmer som kom fra ovenforliggende deler av vassdraget slik at det fløt videre uten å drive inn i bakevjer eller sette seg fast på steinskjær eller grunner i elva. Like nedenfor Elverum prestegard deler Prestøya Glommas løp i to, med fossestryk på hver side. Poenget med Prestegardslensa var å få tømmeret til å gå via den største av disse fossene, Prestfossen, på den nordvestre sida av øya. Her var vannføringa større enn i Klokkerfossen. I slutten av 1960-åra ble det dessuten bygd en flomvoll langs sørsida av Prestfossen, slik at tømmeret ikke lenger kunne drive inn på Prestøya når vårflommen var på sitt strieste. I Klokkerfossen på østsida derimot var det mange oppstikkende steinblokker og flere holmer med krattvegetasjon, som i fløtingssammenheng var hindringer der tømmerstokkene kunne vase seg sammen i digre hauger, som det var slitsomt å få løsnet igjen. Fra 1964 ble de støpte karene som bar Norsk Skogbruksmuseums bru fra fastlandet over til friluftssamlinga på Prestøya et hinder for fløtingsvirke som kom inn i denne delen av elveløpet. Den øvre enden av Prestegardslensa ble forankret i et tre ved elvebredden litt nord for prestegardstunet, mens den nedre enden ble festet i en steinblokk som lå høvelig plassert i elveløpet nordøst for Prestøya. Når tømmeret kom ned mot det sistnevnte punktet sørget strømdraget i elva for at tømmeret ble trukket mot Prestfossen.
Fra gammelt av ble ledelensene gjerne lagd av ferskt fløtingstømmer, fortrinnsvis stokker som hadde fått påhugd eller påboret «auger» (hull) ytterendene fordi de skulle «hankekjøres» (slepes i lange kjeder på snødekt underlag fra hogstteigene i skogen til fløtingsvassdraget). Gjennom disse «augene» ble det tredd vidjer (trebindsel), som rett og slett kunne hogges av ved hjelp av ei øks når fløtinga nærmet seg sluttfasen, slik at lensestokkene fulgte med det øvrige lensetømmeret videre nedover vassdraget. Seinere - etter at det ble slutt med å øye tømmer i forbindelse med framkjøring fra skogen - kjøpte Glomma fellesfløtingsforening lensetømmer som ble auget, og der augene ofte ble forsterket med beslag av bandjern. I denne perioden ble lensestokkene sammenføyd ved hjelp av korte jernkjettinger - «lensekoppel» - som ble tredd gjennom augene i stokkendene og låst ved at en jerntein (ei «nål») i den ene enden av kjettingen ble tredd gjennom en ring (ei «kause») i den andre enden. Lensestokkene skulle bindes sammen med toppendene i motstrøms og rotendene i medstrøms ende, for dette reduserte faren for at løstømmeret ble liggende langsmed lensa og øve unødig stort press på dette flytende stengselet. Fra gammelt av skal det ha vært vanlig at Prestegardslensa ble lagt mens det ennå var is på Glomma, da det gikk an å bruke hest til å dra stokkene i riktig posisjon. Prestegardslensa lå imidlertid i den cirka 6 kilometer lange fløtingsroden mellom Søstuvika i Strandbygda og Hanstadholmen, der Fossum-karene lenge var sentrale aktører i fløtinga. De var også dyktige båtbyggere, og leverte farkoster som var svært stabile, både når de skulle ros gjennom fossene og når fløterne bøyde seg over båtripa for å binde sammen lensestokkene. Fossumbåtene gikk for å være lette å ro, og manøvrerbarheten ble enda bedre etter krigen, da Glomma fellesfløtingsforening investerte i flere påhengsmotorer. Kopling av lensestokker i strømmende vann var likevel tungt arbeid, og fløterne hadde gjerne tau og taljer som hjelpemidler i dette arbeidet.

Lagringsmåten, med luftspalter mellom tømmerfloene, skulle sikre at lensetømmeret hadde gode flyteegenskaper. Fløterne hadde brukt sammenføyde «lensekoppel» (korte kjettinger) for å forebygge at tømmeret rullet mot elva før sesongforberedelsene startet. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt brukte den ene av karene en fløterhake til å komprimere floa av lensestokker slik at den andre kunne få løsnet låsene som holdt kjettingkoplene ihop.

Dette er et av mange fotografier som ble tatt i forbindelse med det fagmiljøet på Norsk Skogbruksmuseum (fra 2003 Norsk Skogmuseum) kalte «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette prosjektet ble utviklet etter at museet var gjort kjent med at tømmerfløtinga i Norges største vassdrag skulle avvikles. Målet med prosjektet var å sikre mest mulig kildemateriale og dokumentasjon fra denne virksomheten, et materiale som deretter skulle brukes til å lage en publikasjon om virksomheten. Det var den da nyansatte historikeren ved museet – amanuensis Øivind Vestheim – som ble prosjektleder, og han samarbeidet tett med museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad. Disse to reiste mye langs vassdraget de siste par fløtingssesongene for å dokumentere virksomheten. Målet med prosjektet var å sikre mest mulig kildemateriale og dokumentasjon fra denne virksomheten, et materiale som deretter skulle brukes til å lage en publikasjon om virksomheten. Det var den da nyansatte historikeren ved museet – amanuensis Øivind Vestheim – som ble prosjektleder, og han samarbeidet tett med museumsfotograf OT Ljøstad. Disse to reiste mye langs vassdraget de siste par fløtingssesongene for å dokumentere virksomheten.
