Ideen om frøplantasjer har vært sentral i det skoggenentiske arbeidet i vår del av verden. Danske og svenske forskere skisserte alt før 2. verdenskrig hvordan kvaliteten på skogen kunne heves ved å lete opp elitetrær i skogene, pode skudd fra toppene av disse trærne på små grunnstammer i spesielle plantasjer og – 15-20 år seinere starte høsting av frøbærende kongler fra disse plantasjene. Deretter skulle de utvalgte klonene stadig evalueres gjennom såkalt avkomtesting av de trærne som plantasjefrøet ble opphav til. Skogbrukets planteforedlingsarbeid i Norge kom ikke ordentlig i gang før etter 2. verdenskrig, da forstkandidaten Tollef Ruden (1907-1992) ble fikk stilling som forsøksleder i Det norske skogforsøksvesen med dette som arbeidsfelt. Gjennom 1950-åra arbeidet Ruden og hans mannskap aktivt med å lokalisere elitetrær, og med tester i veksthus. De første frøplantasjene fikk de anlagt i andre halvdel av 1950-åra. Omkring 1960 kom fylkesskogselskapene aktivt med i dette arbeidet. For Hedmarks del ble frøplantasjespørsmålet fremmet under fylkesskogselskapets årsmøte i 1961, og to-tre år seinere var det praktiske arbeidet i gang. Lokaliteter i Glommadalføret ble diskutert, men ettersom det ble ansett for å være en fordel at plantasjene ble lagt på arealer med god grunn og i en viss avstand fra naturskog (for å unngå for mye «fremmedbestøvning»), valgte man å starte med lokaliteter i jordbruksbygdene på Hedmarken. Hedmark skogselskap fikk blant annet disponere arealer på prestegardene i Stange og Romedal. I Stange satset man på en liten granfrøplantsje. Den var i drift fram til 2006, da dette fotografiet ble tatt. Samtlige plantasjetrær på realet sør for Stange kirke ble felt i samband med konglesankinga dette året.

Det var viktig at konglene ble sanket før kongleskjellene begynte å sprike, slik at frøet falt ut. Sankerne skulle også være på vakt mot åpenbart skadde kongler. Her skimter vi uttredelser av et harpiksaktig stoff, men tilfellene var neppe alvorlig nok til at disse konglene ble liggende igjen på feltet. 2006 var det siste året denne Stange frøplantasjen var i drift. Derfor ble samtlige trær felt, slik at konglene kunne sankes fra kvisten (greinene) som ble liggende på bakken, uten risikofylt klatring. To unge gutter var engasjert som sankere. Konglene ble revet løs fra greinene og lagt i ei plastbøtte. Hver gang bøtta var full, ble den tømt over i sekker, som ble merket med sankested, sankedato og sankerens navn. Denne informasjonen skulle følge konglene til Det norske Skogfrøverk på Hamar.
