Dette er et skannet postkort som Norsk skogmuseum fikk låne for skanning av samleren Knut Borg fra Lena på Toten. Orginalkortet skal være tilbakelevert.
Dette fotografiet er tatt av Thv. Kierulf [eg. Christian Thorvald Kierulf], som levde fra 1890 til 1966. Etter hans død skrev Andreas Vevstad følgende nekrolog i tidsskriftet «Norsk Skogbruk» (nr. 2 1967):
«Thv. Kierulf er død. Helsen sviktet og kreftene ebbet ut det siste året, og han sovnet stille inn julaften, vel 76 år gammel. Et langt liv for norsk skogbruk og norsk natur var slutt.
Thv. Kierulf var født i Asker i 1890, og han tok eksamen ved Skogbruksavdelingen i 1915. Etter 6 år i forskjellige private bedrifter ble han i 1921 assistent i Hedmark Skogselskap. Da konsul Heiberg i 1923 gikk av som formann i Det norske Skogselskap ble Skogselskapets ledelse omorganisert. Forstkandidat G. Sibbern, som til da hadde vært kontorsjef, ble adm. Direktør, og Thv. Kierulf ble ansatt som sekretær. I 1940 ble han kontorsjef, en stilling han hadde til han gikk av for aldersgrensen 1. desember 1960.
Kierulfs virketid i Det norske Skogselskap ble altså hele 37 år. Skogselskapet var ennå ungt da han ble ansatt, men det hadde vunnet en sikker plass i vårt samfunn. Fylkesskogetaten var bygget opp i Skogselskapets regi, og det forvaltet ennå i en del år framover statsbidragene til skogbruket. På den faglige sektor var Skogselskapet aktivt. Av merkesakene i 1920-årene kan nevnes fjellskogens behandling, frøsankingen, lauvskogskjøtsel, planteproduksjon m.m. Til tross for skogbrukets vanskelige økonomiske stilling gikk det framover med skogkulturen, og i 1927 passerte antall utsatte planter for første gang 10 mill.
Så kom skogvernloven av 1932. Det norske Skogselskap var her aktivt med i forarbeidene, og kontakten mellom det offentlige skogoppsyn ble beholdt også etter at loven var trådt i kraft. Først i 1938 overtok Skogdirektoratet administrasjonen av skogreisingen, og i 1941 ble fylkesskogselskapenes funksjonærer statstjenestemenn.
Når vi ser på Skogselskapets historie fra denne tiden, legger vi merke til hvor allsidig selskapets virke var, hvordan det grep inn på nesten alle områder av vårt skogbruk. Særlig var det stor aktivitet på det faglige område, og mange av de idéer Skogselskapet lanserte og de initiativ det tok har vist seg å være levedyktige og har gitt gode resultater.
Thv. Kierulf fant i første rekke sitt virke på skogbrukets indre front. Skogselskapets stab var liten, og oppgavene var mange, så det ble nok å gjøre. Det indre organisasjonsarbeid tok sin tid, kontakten med fylkesskogselskapene også. Kierulf reiste mye over hele landet, og han vant venner over alt. Han kjente alle i skogbruket, og alle kjente ham. Hans lokalkunnskap var imponerende – det fikk jeg ofte bekreftet de gangene jeg fikk høve til å reise sammen med ham.
For å skape bedre kontakt mellom hovedkontoret og fylkesskogselskapene ble medlemsbladet «Skogen» startet i 1935, opg Kierulf ble redaktør fra første stund. Dette bladet, som kanskje var uanseelig i sitt ytre, hadde en stor oppgave, og takket være Kierulfs innsats løste det denne på en utmerket måte. «Skogen» ble et bindeledd mellom medlemmene og organisasjonen, og det bidro til å holde skogsaken varm blant de mange medlemmer som ikke hadde direkte tilknytning til skogbruk.
I 1939/40 ble Kierulf også redaktør av Tidsskift for Skogbruk. Han hadde fungert som redaksjonssekretær der, og han førte tidsskriftet videre på det sikre faglige grunnlag det hadde vært fundert på helt siden starten i 1898. Tidsskift for Skogbruk var opprinnelig månedstidsskrift, men i 1955 gikk det over til kvartalsskrift, etter at Norsk Skogbruk var startet.
I 1935 gav Kierulf ut «Plant skog» – en håndbok i skogkultur. Boken ble skrevet etter oppdrag fra Det norske Skogselskap, og den fikk stor betydning.
I 1944 innbød Det norske Skogselskap til en premiekonkurranse om «et lite, populært skrift for den vanlige skogbruker og særlig med sikte på barskogdistriktene». Kierulf vant denne konkurransen, og resultatet, «Bondens ryggstø», ble trykt i 1951.
Ved Skogselskapets 50-årsjubileum i 1948 redigerte Kierulf jubileumsboken . Resultatet ble et to-bindsverk, ikke bare om Skogselskapets, men om vårt skogbruks utvikling i første halvdel av dette århundre. Kierulf skrev selv Skogselskapets historie, og han har her reist Skogselskapet, og særlig dets ledere, et varig monument.
