Fra gammelt av var skog, og særlig rettvokste bartrær som kunne gi tømmer til konstruksjonsvirke, mangelvare i norske kyststrøk. Derfor var det på avskoget snaumark på Vestlandet at de første storstilte forsøkene på å reise ny skog ble gjort på andre halvdel av 1800-tallet. Etter 2. verdenskrig ble dette en oppgave staten prioriterte høyt. Skogreisinga på Vestlandet fikk sin egen plan i 1952. Storsamfunnet grep stimulerende inn. I 1950 tok staten 50 av kostnadene knyttet til skogreising i sørnorske kyststrøk, og med hele 75 prosent av kostnadene i nordnorske kystbygder. De statlige tilskuddene på Vestlandet steg for øvrig til 65 prosent omkring 1970. Det ble utarbeidet lokale skogreisingsplaner i mange kystkommuner. Også dette forvaltningsnivået bidro med penger, oftest 25 prosent av kostnadene, for å stimulere til realisering av planene. På denne måten ønsket man både å styrke ressursgrunnlaget på mange små jordbrukseiendommer og å bidra til god råstofftilgang til den skogbaserte industrien, som hadde stor nasjonaløkonomisk betydning. I 1952 kommenterte daværende skogdirektør Alf Langsæter (1897-1986) situasjonen på Vestlandet slik: «I de fire vestlandsfylker er interessen vakt og tiltakene fra bygdefolket selv der borte, med skogreisingsplaner i hver bygd, er prisverdig. Jeg må forresten understreke hvor viktig det er med forsvarlig planlegging, bl. a. ved velge den riktige plantemark. Her har det vært syndet, det skal vi ikke hefte oss ved nå, men vi kan ikke fortsette å gjøre feilene. Den beste mark først, av den mark der skogen kan stå varig.» (Fra tidsskriftet «Skogeieren» nr. 10 1952, side 152). Mange kystkommuner fikk egne skogreisingsledere, som skulle stimulere til planting og veilede, slik at resultatene ble best mulig. Tilskuddene var rause, og mange grunneiere forsto at de kunne få offentlig støtte til å øke verdien av egne eiendommer. Det svirret en del utsagn om hvor stor verdiøkningen kunne bli. Synkende realverdi på tømmer i et stadig mer globalisert og «oljedrevet» samfunn har i ettertid fått disse prognosene til framstå som vel optimistiske. Mange plantet, og utover i 1950- og 60-åra kunne man konstatere at arbeidet gikk raskere enn forventet. Med oljeøkonomiens stadig sterkere gjennomslag gikk det imidlertid stadig langsommere fra 1980-åra. Rapporten «Melding om kystskogbruket 2015» forsøkte å blåse nytt liv i skogreisinga langs kysten. Dette dokumentet skisserte hvordan verdiskapinga i kystskogbruket kunne firedobles i løpet av en 30-årsperiode, og minte om kystskogenes viktige karbondioksidbindende kapasitet og trevirkets miljøvennlighet sammenliknet med andre materialer og energikilder. Aktører i naturvernorganisasjonene og miljøforvaltningen reagerte negativt, med henvisning til at produksjonsskog i kystmiljøene ville gå ut over det biologiske mangfoldet. I slike miljøer ble det oppfattet som spesielt problematisk at det var mest aktuelt å plante gran, som i mange kyststrøk er et ungt treslag, og sitkagran, som er et vestamerikansk treslag som ble introdusert i Norge på andre halvdel av 1800-tallet og for alvor fikk gjennomslag som «skogreisingstre» etter 2. verdenskrig.

Nederst i den ovenforliggende lia ser vi dels bladløs, stedegen lauvskog, men også plantefelt med gran, som antakelig ble plantet i dette området etter 2. verdenskrig. På andre halvdel av 1800-tallet konstaterte man at det bare fantes noen få lokaliteter med gran på Vestlandet. Dette treslaget var i ferd med å innvandre til landsdelen. At forekomstene av dette treslaget på Vestlandet ble så store som de er blitt, skyldes at forstmennene som skulle gjenoppbygge skogressursene langs kysten oppdaget at grana gjennomgående «slo bedre til» enn furua, som det fantes en del av i enkelte bygder, og som funn i torvmyrer gav tydelige indikasjoner på at Vestlandet hadde hatt svært lenge.

Museumsfotograf Bård Løken tok dette bildet under hjemreisa til Elverum etter å ha undervist på en fotografworkshop på Vestlandet i februar 2018. Motivet ble valgt med tanke på illustrasjonsbehovene i et bokprosjekt kollega Bjørn Bækkelund arbeidet med.
