I 1914 kjøpte Kristians amts skogselskap – en frivillig organisasjon som på dette tidspunktet hadde 359 medlemmer – eiendommen Skogly i Vardal for 12 000 kroner. Skogly besto av 12 dekar jord, som skogselskapet ville bruke til skogplanteproduksjon, og et våningshus, hvor det ble innredet kontor for virksomheten. I 1917 ble anlegget komplettert med ei lita klengstue. Dyrkingsarealet på Skogly var i minste laget, og barrotplantene var sårbare ved lange og tidkrevende transporter. Derfor anla Oppland skogselskap [nytt navn etter at Kristians amt ble til Oppland fylke i 1918-19] i slutten av 1920-åra supplerende, små planteskoler i Valdres og Gudbrandsdalen. Fra 1937 kom det også i gang en liten planteskole på eiendommen Blåvarp på Eina på Toten.
Etter 2. verdenskrig ble det lansert ambisiøse planer for utvidelse av Gjøvik by, og Skogly-eiendommen, der Oppland skogselskap hadde kontor og hovedplanteskole, ble omregulert til boligfelt med gater og villatomter. Noe av skogplanteproduksjonen ble da flyttet til Askimmyra i Vardal, men der viste det seg raskt at forholdene var for dårlige. I begynnelsen av 1950-åra leide derfor Oppland skogselskap eiendommen Diset på Biri med sikte på å flytte skogplanteproduksjonen dit. Der bygde organisasjonen kontor- og driftsbygning, opparbeidet plantefelter og fikk montert vatningsanlegg med Mjøsa som kilde. De første plantene fra Diset ble levert i 1954. Dette tiåret var en gullalder for skogplanting i Norge, og Oppland skogselskap måtte snart supplere arealene på Diset ved å forpakte Biri prestegard. Tidlig i 1960-åra drev organisasjonen skogplanteproduksjon på cirka 250 dekar jord. På denne tida fikk anlegget også sitt første kjølelager. I 1969 kulminerte produksjonen i «barrotepoken» med leveranser på drøyt 8 millioner planter. Fra 1974 startet prøveproduksjon av dekkrotplanter i såkalte torvband. Fem år seinere bestemte man seg for å satse fullt og helt på såkalte «pluggrotplanter» som ble drevet fram i pottebrett av plast. Samtidig, i 1979, inngikk Oppland skogselskap en ny avtale med Kirke- og undervisningsdepartementet. Skogselskapet bygde ny prestebolig og fikk deretter disposisjonsrett over hele Biri prestegard. Dermed var man klare for langsiktige investeringer. Skogselskapet bygde en ny driftsbygning med kjølelager inntil prestegardslåven, hvor det ble innredet verksted og personalrom. I 1980-åra ble det bygd en serie veksthus for pottebrettproduksjon av skogplanter på prestegardens innmark. I 1990 hadde Oppland skogselskap en produksjonskapasitet på opptil 10 millioner slike planter i året.
I 1980-åra inngikk Oppland skogselskaps datterselskap A/S Skogstre et samarbeid med oljeselskapet Tennoco, Norges Skogeierforbund, Skogbrukerforeningen av 1950 og Det norske Skogselskap om bygging av et digert veksthus der det skulle produseres skogfrø på trær i digre potter, basert på kontrollerte bestøvninger. Det samme veksthuset skulle også brukes til å produsere stiklinger av utvalgte avlstrær av gran. Begge disse prosessene viste seg vanskeligere å realisere enn entusiastene i Oppland skogselskap hadde tenkt, og ingen av dem ble noen kommersiell suksess.
Forbruket av skogplanter sank gradvis fra 1970-åra og framover, og i 1990-åra opplevdes nedgangen som dramatisk. Flere skogselskap måtte avvikle sine anlegg. Blant disse var Akershus skogselskap, som i 2001 la ned Furusmo planteskole i Ullensaker etter om lag 100 års drift der. I og med at miljøet i Akershus deretter inngikk et planteproduksjonssamarbeid med Oppland skogselskap, kom Biri planteskole vel gjennom denne fasen. I 2008 ble planteskolen på Biri rammet av en stor brann. Anlegget ble gjenoppbygd med moderne fasiliteter, og det vurderes nok en gang satsing på foredlingsprosjekter ved kontrollerte krysninger på pottepodninger, denne gangen med varme- og hormonstimuli. Virksomheten drives nå (2017) under selskapsnavnet Skogplanter Østnorge, der Oppland skogselskap har 57 prosent av aksjene og Akershus skogselskap har 43 prosent. Planteskolen selger 8 til 12 millioner skogplanter i året, mest gran, noe furu og litt bjørk og svartor. Planter fra Biri omsettes både på Østlandet, Sørlandet og Vestlandet.

Fotografiet viser hvordan plantene var pakket rammer eller kasser av tre og satt på paller som kunne kjøres inn og ut av lageret ved hjelp av gaffeltruck. Til venstre i forgrunnen sto det et par paller med med pluggrotplanter av gran, til høyre ser vi et parti med furuplanter. Rotpluggene var innkapslet i tynn plastfolie og lagt vekselvis den ene og den andre vegen, slik at plantetoppene stakk ut på begge sider. Disse plantene var behandlet med insektmiddelet «Merit Forest», men Biri planteskole leverte også planter som var beskyttet mot snutebilleangrep ved hjelp av voksbehandling. Emballert på denne måten kan plantene tas ut av kjølelageret og stå ei til to uker før utplanting med hullpipe. Ved lengre lagringstider på kulturfeltene anbefales det at plantene settes på bakken og vannes.
Dette opptaket inngår i en serie som ble tatt på Skogplanter Østnorges anlegg på Biri i Oppland, etter at Skogfrøverkets personale hadde tipset Norsk Skogmuseum om at denne planteskolen hadde modernisert produksjonen, slik at den hadde et noe annet forløp enn det vi kunne se på museets eldre planteskolebilder.
