Femundselva, Trysilelva og Klarälven er navn på hovedåra i et vassdrag som har sine kilder i Femundstraktrene i Engerdal i Norge og sitt utløp i Vänern ved Karlstad i Sverige. Vassdraget er om lag 460 kilometer langt, hvorav cirka 300 på svensk side. Nedslagsfeltet er på omkring 11 850 kvadratkilometer. I dette området er det framfor alt skogen som preger landskapet. Vassdraget har vært mye brukt som transportåre for tømmer. I den nedre delen, på svensk side, skal det ha vært fløting på 1600-tallet. Etter hvert som de store dimensjonene, sagtømmeret, her ble uthogd, kjøpte tømmerhandlerne virke stadig lengre oppover langs elva. Politiske motsetningsforhold mellom Danmark-Norge og Sverige innebar imidlertid at eksport av norsk tømmer på elver som rant over grensa til nabolandet var forbudt. Svenske myndigheter ville heller ikke at svensk tømmer skulle selges til norske trelasthandlere. De politiske spenningene hemmet tømmeromsetningen langs den norske delen av Trysilvassdraget. Lenge var det slik at lovlig tømmeromsetning fra Trysilvassdragets norske nedslagsfelt bare kunne skje ved å kjøre virket på snøføre fra lensesteder ved Trysilelva over kjølen mot vest for videre fløting på Glommavassdraget (fra Jordet mot Osen og fra Høljes mot Flisavassdaget). Trelasthandlerne i Kristiania var imidlertid klar over de store ressursene i grensetraktene, og sikret seg skog. Mot slutten av 1700-tallet ble det ført forhandlinger med svenske myndigheter om tømmerfløting over riksgrensa, og det endte med at man i 1791 lempet på restriksjonene. Etter at Norge i 1814 ble skilt fra Danmark og tvunget inn i en personalunion med Sverige vedtok Stortinget «Lov om Vasdragenes benyttelse af Svenske Undersatter» (av 25. oktober 1815). Her heter det blant annet at «Vasdragene i Riget skulle være aabne for og kunne benyttes af svenske Undersaatter ved Fremdriften af deres Skovproducter, saalænge en lige Bestemmelse for norske Undersaatters Brug af Vasdragene inden Sverriges Riges Grædser i Sverrige har Lovskraft. Denne Brug af de norske Vasdrage skal dog være forbunden med Iagttagelse af, hvad der, for at forekomme Misbrug og Uleiligheder, maatte findes fornødent at anordne». I Trysil og Engerdal fantes det ved inngangen til 1800-tallet bare 15 små gardssager som som produserte planker og bord til lokalt forbruk. Ved Vänern derimot, fantes det trelasthandlere som etterspurte store tømmerkvanta. «Herrar Timmerhandlare på Clara Elf med deri fallande Vattendrag» skal ha etablert en fellesfløtingsforening tidlig på 1800-tallet. Denne organisasjonens møteprotokoller fra 1832 og framover skal være bevart i Värmlandsarkivet i Karlstad. Trelasthandlerne inngikk også langsiktige leveranseavtaler med skogeierne langs sidevassdragene mot å gjøre disse vassdragene lettere fløtbare ved sprenging av steinskjær og bygging av ledeskjermer og dammer, som gjorde det mulig å samle opp tilstrekkelige mengder fløtingsvann. Likevel hendte det at det tok et par sesonger å få tømmeret ut av tverrelvene. I hovedvassdraget var fløtinga mer effektiv, spesielt etter at det ble foretatt sprengingsarbeider i et par av fossene der. Det kan dokumenteres at det har vært fløtet betydelige mengder tømmer fra Engerdal og Trysil til skogindustrien ved Vänern fra 1840-åra og framover. Fløtingskvantumet var størst i 1950-åra, med et årsgjennomsnitt på bortimot 150 000 kubikkmeter (fastmasse). Fra 1960-åra begynte sagbruk på Drevsjø i Engerdal og i Trysil å kjøpe opp sagtømmerkvalitetene. Etter den tid var det bare massevirke som ble fløtet til Sverige. I 1950-åra bygde Klarälvens flottningsförening en stor terminalplass for lastebiltransportert tømmer ved Røskjota i Engerdal, der virket ble lagt til tørk før utislaget og fløtinga startet, noe som reduserte søkketømmerandelen. Fra midten av 1960-åra ble det bygd flere slike anlegg. Velteplassene eller tømmerterminalene fikk virke som var framkjørt på et stadig mer finmasket nett av skogsbilveger. På denne måten kunne fløtinga på sidevassdragene først begrenses og etter hvert avvikles. Hovedløpet i Trysilvassdraget hadde likevel, som det siste vassdraget i Norge, løstømmerfløting fram til 1991. I sluttfasen ble virksomheten viet betydelig oppmerksomhet. NRK fjernsynet produserte dokumentasjonsfilm fra Trysil-fløtinga og Thorbjørn Bakken lagde reportasjebok med tittelen «Rompa her!» I 1991 kom også Hedmark fylkeskommune og Fylkesmannen i Hedmark, med innleid bistand fra museene i fylket, med rapporten «Fløtningsinnretninger i Hedmark», der kulturminnene etter tømmerfløtinga i Trysilvassdraget er dokumenterte.

Hvert båtlag besto vanligvis av fire mann: En «framstavnkar», som satt ved årene, en «bakstavnkar» akterut, som bidro til manøvreringa ved hjelp av ei skåtestang, og to «haugkarer», som skulle arbeide på tømmerhauger som hadde bygd seg opp i den sentrale delen av elveløpet. I tillegg gikk det en del landkarer med fløterhaker langs begge elvebredder, der de skjøv stokker som hadde strandet ut i de strømmende vannmassene igjen. På dette fotografiet ser vi bare «framstavnkarer» og «bakstavnkarer». Fløterbåtene som ble brukt i Trysilvassdraget var forholdsvis store, med skrog som var bygd av smale, tynne furubord, sammenføyd ved hjelp av «kinger» (metallkramper). Båtene var det arbeidsformannen (fløterbasen) Kåre Joar Graff som bygde båtene de siste åra det ble fløtet tømmer på Trysilvassdraget.
I tiåra etter 2. verdenskrig ble lastebiltransport på et stadig mer finmasket vegnett og med stadig større lastebiler et alternativ til tømmerfløting, først langs de små og vanskelig fløtbare sidevassdragene, men etter hvert også i hovedvassdragene. Ledelsen ved daværende Norsk Skogbruksmuseum så denne tendensen, og organiserte fotodokumentasjon av tømmerfløtinga. I 1982 ble det gjort et grundig arbeid i Haldenvassdraget, og i årene som fulgte var «Prosjekt Glomma» sentralt i museets faglige virksomhet. Etter at fløtinga i Norges lengste fløtingsvassdrag ble avsluttet i 1985, fortsatte amanuensis Øivind Vestheim og fotograf Ole-Thorstein Ljøstad dokumentasjonsarbeidet langs Trysilvassdraget. Dette fotografiet ble tatt der, i 1986.
