Den 7. mai 1952 skrev Kongsvinger-avisa Glåmdalen dette om den situasjonen som sannsynligvis førte til at mennene på fotografiet møttes:
«Spennende døgn i Nord-Odal mens flom og 3 000 kbm. tømmer holdt på å feie vekk Sandfossdammen og Sand bru
Det var en spenningens dag i Nord-Odal i går. Tidlig om morgenen sprang ei lense der Mørkåa munner ut i Råsen, og 3 000 kubikkmeter tømmer satte seg i bevegelse nedover mot Sand, Sandfossdammen og Sand bru. Regnet i Råsens store nedslagsdistrikt, fikk vassdraget til å svulme opp og anta dimensjoner som bare gammelt folk kunne erindre maken til. Her nyttet intet. Fløterne sto maktesløse med sine langskaftete haker overfor naturkreftene. Ville dammen holde overfor dette veldige presset fra tømmer og vatn? var det stående spørsmål blant nordodølingene som stod iført sydvester og regntøy og fulgte situasjonen fra knausene omkring.
Gav dammen etter, ville det ikke være håp for brua. I radioen ble det spådd muligheter for lettere vær, men værstasjonen på sin side meldte om 52,9 millimeter nedbør på ett døgn, mens normalen for hele mai måned er 51,7, og utover hele dagen striregnet det ufortrødent. Ved middagstider kom fløtningsinspektør Greni til åstedet og tok et overblikk over situasjonen sammen med ingeniør Gjessing, fløtningsformann Birger Møller, John Bergsødegården og distriktssjef Thoner. De så imidlertid ingen større fare. Fløtningsinspektøren forsikret at det måtte bli den rene syndflod hvis vatnet skulle stige slik at tømmeret jumpet over dammen og ned mot brua. Dammen som sådan tvilte han ikke et øieblikk på. Den er solid og vil kunne motstå nesten hva som helst. Men fløtningsinspektøren, som bare for noen få dager siden ønsket seg mengder av vatn, syntes det nå ble vel mye, ja, så mye at det ville sinke fløtinga. Den skulle ellers vært unnagjort i tverrelvene Nord-Odal i løpet av de nærmeste dagene.»
Den 9. mai 1952 kunne Østlendingen melde at problemet var løst:
«Tømmerfloken ved Sand løst i går
Både onsdag og i går haket, lirket, skjøv og dro 20 iherdige fløtere på de ca. 6 000 kbm tømmer som hadde korket seg ved Sandsdammen i Nord-Odal. Hovedmassen ble stengt med en lense, og ved middagstider i går lyktes det å få hull på byllen for alvor. Så snart stokkene fosset gjennom dammen i stedet for å la seg slepe over den, ble det dobbelt liv og lyst i arbeidet, og det gikk fort unna.
Fløtingsinspektør Greni var tilstede der det meste av gårsdagen, og direktør Sparby avla også et besøk.»

Karene gjorde sitt beste for å forhindre at det skulle danne seg en haug som det kunne bli krevende å få fjernet på dette stedet. Fotografiet er tatt våren 1952, da det var storflom i Sandselva. Vannet strømmet over damkrona til høyre i bakgrunnen, og med det fulgte fløtingstømmer i store mengder. Folk fra lokalsamfunnet hadde samlet seg på vegen vest for elva for å se flomdramaet på nært hold.
De store tømmermengdene vi ser på fotografiet kom etter at lensa ved Mørkåas utløp i Råsen hadde sviktet under en kraftig regnflom. Store mengder vann og tømmer ble ansett for å være en fare for dammen - se fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe de kalte «Prosjekt Glomma». Dette innebar at historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad fulgte fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløting om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for papirarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. Materialet ble enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført.
