Dette fotografiet er tatt i Julussdalen i Elverum, der Skogfrøverket i 2014 startet opparbeidinga av en ny frøplantasje for gran for bruk ved etablering av ny fjellskog (6-800 meter over havet). Behovet for et slikt nyanlegg oppsto fordi enkelte av de forpaktningsarealene om bruk av dyrket mark til slike plantasjer som ble inngått i 1950- og 60-åra ikke er ble forlenget etter 50 års drift. I pionertida for frøplantasjer var spesielt et par av fylkesskogselskapene svært aktive, seinere har Skogfrøverket overtatt ansvaret for hele denne virksomheten. Da det ble klart at man måtte skaffe erstatningsarealer for de plantasjene som skulle avvikles kom det flere tilbud. For Skogfrøverket var det viktig å velge lokaliteter som det var overkommelig å drifte med mannskap som har frøproduksjonsanlegget på Hamar som arbeidssted, og som ligger slik til at man har godt håp om å få gode «kongleavlinger» med begrenset bestøvning fra omkringstående skog med annen klimatilpasning og andre genetiske egenskaper enn dem man tar sikte på å avle fram. I Skavhaugskogen fikk man først tilbud om et areal ved elva Julussa, men der var frøverkets folk noe bekymret for frostproblematikk i etableringsfasen. Den skogfaglige ledelsen for legatskogen tilbød da å hogge et annet, sørvendt liareal hvor man antok at frostfaren var mindre. Etter hogsten ønsket Skogfrøverket å få kultivert arealet, slik at man lett kan plante grunnstammer på rader med en innbyrdes avstand som gjør det overkommelig å foreta maskinell ugrasrydding og bruk av maskinelt utstyr under høsting. Faren for «fremmedbestøvning» er begrenset, fordi denne granplantasjen ligger omgitt av furuskog. Et sandholdig jordsmonn kan gi et vel tørt vekstklima, men dette vil antakelig stimulere kongleproduksjonen. Elgpopulasjonen i Julussdalen er stor, og for å beskytte arealet mot beiteskader, vil det bli oppsatt et høgt gjerde rundt plantasjen, som er på 130 dekar. Noe av dette er impediment, men cirka 100 dekar vil bli beplantet med grunnstammer av gran som er podet med toppskudd fra «elitetrær» i de høydelagene plantasjen skal forsyne. Skogfrøverkets folk startet utplantinga av 1 500 podete grunnstammer i 2015, og fortsatte med 1 000 i 2016. Etableringsfasen ble imidlertid tøff, og en del av plantene døde på grunn av tørke og snutebilleangrep, slik at de vil måtte fornyes. Skavhaugplantasjen etableres på mark som tilhører Stiftelsen Skavhaugen gard og skogsdrift, og i samarbeid med stiftelsens daglige leder Ove Idar Sætereng og skogbrukssjef Erik Stenhammer i Elverum kommune. Parallelt med prosjektet i Julussdalen etableres det også nye frøplantasjearealer på Svennebyøya i Våler.

Fotografiet ble tatt høsten 2016, drøyt to år etter at dette arealet ble overflatedyrket for å kunne tilplantes. Man brukte fireårige planter, som de to siste åra hadde stått i potter ved Biri planteskole i Oppland. På disse grunnstammene hadde Skogfrøverkets folk podet kvister fra elitetrær fra de eldre frøplantasjene på Oppsal i Ringebu kommune i Oppland kommune og Kaupanger i Sogndal kommune i Sogn og Fjordane fylke. Utvalget av podemateriale er gjort av Ragnar Johnskås, som i mange år har arbeidet med avkomtesting og frøavl ved Skogfrøverket. Podningene er merket med tallkoder som er referanser til det genetiske opphavet. Matjorda i haugen på dette fotografiet ble brukt som fylljord i plantehullene. I bakgrunnen på dette fotografiet ser vi Frode Murud, som kjørte en ATV med tilhenger, som Skogfrøverkets medarbeidere brukte til å transportere planter og fylljord rundt på plantasjefeltet.
Norsk Skogmuseum har gjennom flere år samarbeidet med Det norske Skogfrøverk om å dokumentere institusjonens og skogkultursektorens historie. Skogfrøverket er blant annet ansvarlig for driften av frøplantasjer, som skal sikre kvalitetsfrø til produksjon av skogplanter for ulike høydelag. Tidlig på 2000-tallet har det foregått utfasing av en del eldre frøplantasjer, noe som har utløst behov for etableringer av nye. En av de nye plasseres på Skavhaugen i Julussdalen. Bård Løken og Bjørn Bækkelund fra Skogmuseet var der for å dokumentere oppyrkinga av plantasjearealet våren 2014 (jfr. SJF-F.007125 - SJF-F,007137). Dette fotografiet er tatt under en oppfølgingstur høsten 2016, da personell fra Skogfrøverket arbeidet med planting på frøplantasjearealet.
