Arbeidarar, politikarar og fleire i Tyssedal og Odda kjempa for å bevara lokalsamfunnet og arbeidsplassar etter at aluminiumsverket blei lagt ned og rive i 1981-1982. Industrisaka som utvikla seg var eineståande i Noreg.
Utdrag frå bokprosjektet KRAFTA ER VÅR! Kampen om Tyssedal av Ellen Resjø:
Tyssedal-samfunnet blei bygd ut og aluminiumsverket reist på begynnelsen av dette århundret. Utenlandsk kapital gikk til investeringer på grunn av den billige elektriske krafta i Norge. De utenlandske storselskapa hadde latt fabrikken og produksjonsutstyret bli nedslitt på 60-tallet. På begynnelsen av 70-tallet bestemte de å legge ned fabrikken sin i Eydehavn og gjorde det klart at de ikke ønska å investere i Tyssedal-fabrikken. Men de ville fortsette produksjonen inntil videre i Tyssedal. Fabrikken var da Norges minste og mest umoderne aluminiumsverk og trengte sårt å moderniseres for å være konkurransedyktig. Etter press fra fagforening og kommune, innleda staten forhandlinger om hjemkjøp av DNN
Aluminium AS. Selskapet blei statsbedrift fra 1. januar 1976.
Under hjemkjøpsforhandlingene ga DNA-regjeringa en garanti for at arbeidsplassene i Tyssedal skulle opprettholdes. Opp gjennom 70-tallet blei det forhandla om hva slags alternative arbeidsplasser Tyssedal- og Odda-samfunnet skulle få. Stat og kommune ønska alternativ industri til Tyssedal — staten ut fra hensynet til norsk aluminiumsindustri og annen kraftkrevende industri og kommunen ut fra det ensidige næringsgrunnlaget i Odda. Disse bestrebelsene lyktes ikke. Ingen konkrete prosjekt blei
lansert som var lønnsomme nok eller som kunne gi lokalsamfunnet et tilstrekkelig antall arbeidsplasser.
DNA-regjeringa falt da tilbake på å bygge ny aluminiumsfabrikk, som var det eneste konkrete realiserbare prosjektet med et akseptabelt antall arbeidsplasser. Likevel blei det aldri reist noe aluminiumsverk i Tyssedal. Den gamle fabrikken var blitt revet, ny
dypvannskai bygd og folk sendt på opplæring i den nye prosessen i Høyanger. Det var blitt 80-åra og tid for omfattende strukturendring av norsk industri. Landet hadde fått Høyre-regjering. Og etter valget mente denne regjeringa det var uansvarlig å bygge aluminiumsverket i Tyssedal. På tross av et enstemmig stortingsvedtak bare 6 måneder tidligere. Som løsning for Tyssedal lanserte Willoch-regjeringa et ilmenittverk. Men prosjektet måtte utredes nærmere. Det ville gi færre arbeidsplasser enn aluminiumsverket. På samme tid nedsatte regjeringa et utvalg som skulle utrede framtida for de ensidige industristedene her i landet. Omstilling var løsenet. Men til hva? Mange lokalsamfunn måtte regne med rasering av arbeidsplassene og samfunnet.
Tyssedal blei en prøvestein på den «nye» industripolitikken her til lands. Høyre-regjeringa stansa prosjekteringa av aluminiumsverket og lot ilmenittprosjektet utrede. Men dette prosjektet ga færre arbeidsplasser og var usikkert både med hensyn til produksjonsteknologi og markedsutsikter. Tyssedalog Odda-samfunnet gikk mann av huse for å vise sin forakt for parlamentarikere som gikk tilbake på løfter og tidligere vedtak. De prøvde å vise at aluminium var et realistisk og lønnsomt alternativ. Deres iherdige forsvarskamp blei riksstoff i media. Uten denne mobiliseringa av lokalsamfunnet er det grunn
til å spørre om det ville blitt noe ilmenittverk i det hele tatt. For det blei politisk nødvendig for regjeringa å gi Tyssedal noe, om den ikke ville ha alurniniumsproduksjon i Tyssedal. Og lokalsamfunnet fikk godt over 200 arbeidsplasser i et ilmenittverk, bare litt i underkant av det prosjekterte aluminiumsverket.Fotografering: June 7, 1982 (ant.)
