Dette motivet inngår i en serie som ble tatt i forbindelse med en fjernsynsproduksjon der temaet var det tunge og slitsomme skogsarbeidet før mekaniseringa skjøt fart i 1960- og 70-åra. Opptakene ble gjort i Nordre Osen i Åmot, Hedmark, 13. og 14. februar 1980. Programmet ble sendt på NRK 1. mai 1981, altså på arbeiderbevegelsens internasjonale markeringsdag. Følgende pressemelding ble distribuert i forkant av fjernsynsvisningen:
«Fra tømmerskog og ljorekoie.
Livet i tømmerskogen ble ofte romantisert. Arbeidet var fritt, og hoggeren levde et såkalt sunt liv, ettersom arbeidet foregikk i friluft. Skogsarbeid før motorsaga og traktoren er tema for programmet, som forsøker å vise en del redskap, arbeids- og levemåter fra rundt århundreskiftet og fram til siste verdenskrig. Om det på denne tiden kom en del nye redskap, var likevel arbeidet det samme slitet. Alt fra felling til barking foregikk helt med håndkraft. Bare i framkjøring og lunning hjalp hesten til. Ennå var det vanlig at skogsarbeiderne selv satte opp sine skogshusvær, og mange gjennomlevde vinternatta i ljorekoie, med jordgolv, ildsted midt på golvet, og en åpen ljore i taket.
Koia var så kald at hoggeren kviet seg for å gå inn om kvelden, og lengtet etter å komme seg ut til arbeidet om morgenen. Hesten måtte ofte greie seg med en stall av granbar, og om det var riktig kaldt, måtte det kjøres et tømmerlass midt på natta for at hesten ikke skulle stivne.
Programmet er tatt opp i Østerdalen, ved Femunden, i Nordre Osen og på Norsk Skogbruksmuseum i Elverum. Programmet er ved Per Egil Hovind.»

Barkespaden er et eggredskap med en fal i den ene enden, som er festet i enden på et cirka en meter langt treskaft. Redskapet føres langsetter trestammen i lengderetningen med sikte på å hogge løs barken. Sommerstid ville barken ha løsnet i lange strimer, men i kaldt vintervær, som her, greide Granberg bare å løsne små barkflak av gangen. Han sto på den ene sida av stokken, og lot så vel armene som overkroppen bevege seg i et pendlende mønster. Under tradisjonell tømmerdrift ble stokkene nesten alltid barket. Det skyldtes dels at barket virke lett lot seg slepe på snødekt mark under lunning og hankekjøring, dels at de helst skulle ha en forsiktig tørk utover ettervinteren og våren, slik at de ikke var for tunge og vasstrukne når fløtingssesongen startet. Slik reduserte man mengden søkketømmer. Barket tømmer hadde heller ikke samme tilbøyelighet som ubarket virke til å sette seg fast på sand- og grusører i fløtingsvassdragene. Barkinga var imidlertid svært tidkrevende, og dermed kostnadsdrivende, i streng vinterkulde. Fra 1960-åra og framover ble barkinga på enkelte tømmerterminalplasser langs de store vassdragene mekanisert, og en del av treforedlingsbedriftene investerte i digre barketromler. Dermed ble det stadig mindre manuell barking i skogen. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var Granberg kledd i vadmelsbukser og vadmelsjakke. Han hadde snøsokker på beibna, ullvotter på hendene og en vidbremmet svart filthatt på hodet. Både det manuelle barkingsarbeidet og klærne Granberg hadde på seg fortonte seg nok som noe antikvariske da dette bildet ble tatt, i 1980. Årsaken til dette var at Granberg er fotografert som en av aktørene da NRK lagde en dokumentarfilm om slitet i det gamle skogbruket - jfr. fanen «Opplysninger».
