- Den første oppgaven Th. Kittelsen fikk i forbindelse med Wessel kom i 1890. Norsk-amerikaneren Harry Randall, kjent globetrotter, fikk ham til å lage tegninger til "Hundemordet" og "Smeden og Bageren". Den siste av disse utkom i 1891 som en mappe med løse plansjer hos C. Rasmussens Forlagsboghandel, Chicago og Minneapolis. Denne mappen er i dag en bibliofil sjeldenhet som vi med sikkerhet kjenner til bare to eksemplarer av i Norge! Innholdet er identisk med den boken du nå holder i hånden, men vi har reprodusert tegningene fra en utgave som kom i 1920. "Hundemordet" utkom aldri i Amerika, Kittelsen fikk tegningene tilbake. Han sendte dem til Ernst Bojesen i "Nyt Nordisk Forlag" i København, men etter dennes mening var de "for raae" til å bli utgitt. (De utkom imidlertid som et lite hefte hos Aschehoug i 1893).
