I desember 2015 lå følgende tekst om utstillingsprosjektet «Det fantastiske treet» på Norsk Skogmuseums hjemmeside:
«I disse dager bygges verdens største aluminiumstre på Norsk Skogmuseum. Treet skal inngå i en ny utstilling om fotosyntesen.
Første del av utstillingen; TREnd - om tre i design, arkitektur og kunst åpnet januar 2015.
Debatten om skogens betydning for klimaet er både kompleks og sammensatt. Derfor ser Norsk Skogmuseum behovet for formidling av kunnskap om tematikken skog og klima. I den nye utstillingen skal vi konstruere et stort tre som skal skape fascinasjon rundt treets fantastiske egenskaper. De besøkende skal lære om treets liv; hvordan fotosyntesen og karbonkretsløpet foregår, og om skogens rolle i klimasammenheng.
Den første delen av utstillingen viser treets egenskaper som byggemateriale, vist gjennom kunst, møbler og arkitektur. Eksemplene som stilles ut er noen av de beste innen nyere norsk formgivning. Flere av disse er prisbelønte for sin høye kvalitet og gode trebruk. Vi viser de gode eksemplene for å inspirere til økt bruk av materialet tre. Denne delen av utstillingen åpnet i januar 2015.
Til sammen skal utstillingsprosjektet «Det fantastiske treet» fornye 350 kvm. av våre utstillingsarealer. I forlengelsen av dette har vi planer om å bygge et forskningsrom. Dette skal være et spennende laboratorium som gir en introduksjon i naturvitenskaplige forskningsmetoder.
Utstillingen skal gi større forståelse og kunnskap, spesielt til unge, om skogens økologiske og samfunnsmessige betydning. Den skal vekke oppmerksomhet, og avansert utstillingsteknikk skal skape opplevelser, vekke nysgjerrighet, og være pedagogisk i sin formidlingsform.
I produksjonen samarbeider vi med designere og trebedrifter for å vise hvordan treverk kan formes og gis nye uttrykk. Den amerikanske trekunstneren Kevin Iris og Geir Roger Børresen fra Frode Stenberg AS har laget treet av flere hundre aluminiumsrør. Alle rørene har fiberoptiske kabler, og er viklet til stamme og grener. Treet har blader og blomster som skal åpne og lukke seg, og sammen med lyseffekter i bladene vil treet kunne vise alle de fire årstidene.
Utstillingen inneholder også en vegg som viser et forstørret bladsnitt. Det vil forklare hvordan fotosyntesen foregår i bladet. Industridesigner Nick Stevens har utviklet mekanikken i blomster og blader.

Utstillingen er plassert i atriet som ligger sentralt i den delen av museumsbygningen som ble reist tidlig i 1990-åra. Her – under et pyramideformet glasstak – har kunstneren Kevin Iris med god bistand fra Geir Roger Børresen og Kjell Arne Grøtbekklien reist en cirka 7,5 meter høy treskulptur med jernkjerne, men med påviklete aluminiumrør med fiberoptiske kabler. Treet skal brukes til å formidle trærnes biologi, med transport av vann og mineraler fra bakken og oppover, og fotosynteseprodukter fra bladene og nedover. Designeren Nick Stevens har produsert blader og blomster av «intelligent metall», som skal kunne skifte farge og åpne og lukke seg, slik slike plantedeler i naturen gjør i takt med vekslende lysimpulser. I bakgrunnen ser vi en glassvegg foran et av galleriene i utstillingsrommet. Denne veggen er formet som et lysende tverresnitt av cellestrukturen i et blad.
