Johan Rasch var fra småbruket Grønstad i Elverum. Som 14-åring var han vinteren 1930 første gang med faren som «løskar» under tømmerkjøring. Skogsarbeid med øks, svans og barkespade ble han også tidlig vant med. Johans far, Oskar Martinussen Rasch, døde under bombinga av Elverum i 1940. Dermed mistet slektningen Torbjørn Rasch, som var statens skogfullmektig i området, en dyktig medarbeider. Torbjørn oppmuntret unge Johan til å overta farens oppgaver. Det gjorde han, ikke bare som tømmerkjører. Johan arbeidet også i tømmerfløtinga på Glomma på strekningen mellom Søstuvika og Hanstadholmen i Elverum, der han etter hvert ble leder for arbeidslaget. Han drev også småbruket etter foreldrene videre, inntil utvidelsen av byggebeltet rundt kommunesenteret i Elverum gjorde videre jordbruk på Grønstad umulig. Også virksomheten som tømmerkjører med hest ble innhentet av moderniteten og dens maskiner. Etter den store skogbrannen på Starmoen i 1976 ønsket arbeidsgiveren – Statskog – at Johan skulle gi opp tømmerkjøringa, og i stedet bidra som tømmerhogger med motorsag som arbeidsredskap, noe han aksepterte. Johan Rasch hadde mange ulike erfaringer fra flere ulike arbeidsfelt i skogbruket, og på sine eldre dager ble han derfor en viktig informant for personalet ved Norsk Skogmuseum, som ligger noen få hundrede meter fra småbruket han bodde på gjennom hele livet. Samtalene med Johan Rasch om skogslivet vitnet om at han var en kar med god evne til å reflektere over sitt virke.

Da dette fotografiet ble tatt hadde han stilt opp hesten, som var forspent en «rustning» - en todelt tømmerdoning der framsleden ble kalt «bukk» og baksleden «geit» – foran ei tømmervelte. Før han kunne begynne å lesse måkte han snøen fra toppen av tømmerlunna ved hjelp av ei aluminiumroko. Deretter tok han spettet for å bende løs de sammenfrosne tømmerstokkene. Så rullet og trakk han stokkene over på sleden. Bildet viser hvordan Johan Rasch la kjettingstumpene fra endenene av svingbankene over lasset, slik at de møttes på oversida. Her trakk han den ene enden gjenneom en pæreformet lekk i enden av den andre, noe som låste kjettingen og forhindret at lasset forskjøv seg sidevegs. Når tømmerkjøreren hadde fått et høvelig antall stokker over på rustningen, strammet kjettingbindslet ved hjelp av en benningsbjønn og la høysekken på lasset for å ha sitteunderlag mens han kjørte til nærmeste bilveg eller fløtingsvassdrag. Johan Rasch var kledd i vadmelsbukser, dongerijakke og topplue, og hadde langskaftete gummistøvler på beina mens han arbeidet.
