Skaversaga skal været bygd midt på 1800-tallet. Fra først av skal den ha vært oppgangssag, men etter hvert ble den ombygd til sirkelsag. Slik ble den brukt fram til 2. verdenskrig. Deretter ble saga stående ubrukt, slik at den etter hvert begynte å forfalle. Tidlig i 1960-åra skal en av eierne, Adolf Skavern (1903-1981) ha forsøkt å be om offentlig støtte til restaurering av det som var i ferd med å bli et sjeldent kulturminnen, men forgjeves. I første halvdel av 1970-åra konstaterte man at saganlegget begynte å bli svært råttent. Det ble da inngått en avtale mellom eierne – Adolf Skavern, Trygve Sømo (1915-1999) og Halvor Engemoen (1922-1993) – og Norsk Skogbruksmuseum om restaurering av anlegget. Museets utstillings- og undervisningsleder, Jostein K. Nysæther (1921-2006), som sjøl var fra Osen, målte opp saghuset og den tilstøtende ljørbua, og det ble satt opp kalkyle for hva arbeidet ville koste. Deretter sendte eierne, sammen med Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, søknad om økonomisk støtte til prosjektet fra Åmot kommune. I søknaden heter det blant annet:
«Skaversaga ligger ved Nedre Tverrenfallet på østsiden av Osensjøen, ca. 5 km fra Osnesset. Den er bygd i 1850-åra som oppgangssag, men ble senere ombygd til sirkelsag og brukt fra til siste krig.
I forbindelse med saga er det gjort omfattende arbeider i elva. Det er bygd en terskel på skrå over elvefaret og en 90 meter lang forbygning med to sluser for inntak av vann til sagrenna. Alt dette er bygd av tilhogne steiner av betydelige dimensjoner. I forbindelse med saga er det også tømret opp ei lita ljorebu.
Hele anlegget er – kulturhistorisk sett – meget interessant og bevaringsverdig, og eierne har, sammen med Norsk Skogbruksmuseum, tatt skritt i retning av restaurering. Skolen er også inne i bildet, og det har kommet forslag om å legge ei permanent natur/kulturløype i området – og la sagområdet inngå som en post i denne løypa. Dette kunne bli et verdifullt pedagogisk tilbud til skolene i kommunen. Dessverre er både saghuset og ljorebua i sterkt forfall, men restaureringsarbeidet er allerede i gang. Golvet i saghuset er reparert, sagtomta ryddet og takmaterialer tilkjørt. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum har gjort nødvendige oppmålinger, kartlegging og fotografering. Planen er at museet skal ha det faglige ansvar for tilsyn og vedlikehold.
Det er for øvrig gjort henvendelse til riksantikvaren med tanke på å få saga fredet som teknisk kulturminne.
Året 1975 skal være et spesielt arkitekturvernår, og vi vil gjerne at restaureringen av Skaversaga skal være et ledd i denne sammenheng. Vi håper Åmot kommune vil støtte oss i dette arbeidet, og søker om et bidrag på kr. 6 000,-.»
Med søknaden fulgte det et kostnadsoverslag der man hadde kalkulert totalkostnadene ved restaurering av anlegget til 17 800 kroner. Cirka en tredel av dette ønsket eierne og museet at kommunen skulle bidra med. Formannen i kulturutvalget i kommunen reiste til Skaversaga på befaring, og utvalget anbefalte enstemmig at kommunen skulle innvilge søknaden. Kontorsjef Bjarne Holen i Åmot hadde imidlertid fått rede på at staten i anledning «Arkitekturvernåret 1975» hadde avsatt 700 000 kroner til «bevaring av den anonyme bebyggelse utover landet», og at 40 000 kroner av dette beløpet var tildelt Hedmark fylke. Han anbefalte derfor at kommunestyret i Åmot skulle avvise søknaden, og oversende den til Fylkesmannen i Hedmark. Kontorsjefens innstilling ble enstemmig vedtatt. Dermed havnet saken på fylkeskonservator Per Martin Tvengsbergs bord. Han tildelte søkerne 2 000 kroner. Etterpå bidro også Åmot kommune med 4 000 kroner. Museet kjøpte impregnerte takbord, og Adolf Skavern ledet snekkergjengen, som satte saghuset og den tilhørende ljørbua i stand i løpet av somrene 1975 og 1976. Ved utgangen av sistnevnte år gjorde Jostein K. Nysæther opp følgende status for prosjektet:
«Første trinn i arbeidet med å restaurere Skavernsaga i Osen samt tilhørende sagkoie er nå avsluttet. Begge hus er restaurert. Råtne stokker og bjelker er erstattet med nye, og det er lagt nye tak av trykkimpregnerte materialer. Når det gjelder selve saghuset, står en del arbeide igjen. Det er ønske om å kunne restaurere vassrenna og vasshjulet, samt en skådam av tømmer. Noe penger er det igjen til dette, men det blir nødvendig med nye bevilgninger for å få arbeidet fullført.»
Nysæther skisserte samtidig et opplegg for en natur- og kultursti for skoleelever med konkrete naturfaglige, forstlige og kulturhistoriske attraksjoner, hvor Skaversaga inngikk. Dette pedagogiske opplegget ble prøvd i 1977.

Denne saga tilhørte brukerne på eiendommene Søndre Skavern, Nordre Skavern og Engemoen i Nord-Osen, og den var i bruk fram til 2. verdenskrig. Saghuset besto av et par laftete omfar som kvilte på tørrmurte natursteinspilarer, og som bar golvlunnene, som lå på tvers av husets lengderetning. På den laftete botnramma var det reist tre stolpepar som bar raftstokkene, og som var avstivet ved hjelp av skråband. De nevnte stolpeparene bar også hver sine tømrete gavler og et bordtekket åstak. Sagbenken var intakt, men både rullene, brettet og sagbladet manglet da dette fotografiet ble tatt. På dette fotografiet ser vi ellers hvordan vannet fosset inn mot et defekt kvernhjul under saghuset. Bildet ble tatt som ledd i arbeidet med en restaureringsplan for saghuset og ei tilstøtende ljørbu. Informasjon om restaureringsprosessen finnes under fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet inngår i en serie fotograf OT Ljøstad fra Norsk Skogbruksmuseum tok ved Skaversaga i 1974. Bildene skulle brukes som dokumentasjon, ikke bare i museet, men også overfor instanser man søkte økonomisk støtte fra med sikte på å restaurere saga.
