Ved inngangen til atriet der utstillingen «Det fantastiske treet» bygges, har museet slått opp følgende informasjonstekst til publikum:
«Verdens største tre i ny utstilling.
I museets nye utstilling «Det fantastiske treet» konstruerer vi verdens største tre i aluminium. Det skal være med i formidlingen av fotosyntesen.
Debatten om klimaendringer, og skogens betydning i denne sammenheng er både kompleks og sammensatt, og det er et behov for kunnskapsformidling av tematikken skog og klima. Derfor er Norsk Skogmuseum i gang med å bygge en utstilling som skal skape fascinasjon rundt treets fantastiske egenskaper. De besøkende skal lære om treets liv; hvordan fotosyntesen blir til, karbonkretsløpet, og skogens rolle i klimasammenheng.
Utstillingen skal gi større forståelse og kunnskap, spesielt til unge, om skogens økologiske og samfunnsmessig betydning. Den skal vekke oppmerksomhet, og avansert utstillingsteknikk skal skape opplevelser, vekke nysgjerrighet, og være pedagogisk i sin formidlingsform.
Treet består av aluminiumsrør med fiberoptiske kabler. Det skal få lyseffekter i blader og blomster, som skal åpne og lukke seg ved hjelp av hukommelsesmetall. Dette vil til sammen gjøre at treet kan vise alle de fire årstidene.
Det vil være hektisk aktivitet i byggeperioden, og store elementer skal på plass. Vi beklager at det kan føre til noe støy og rot.»
Fra produksjonen av utstillingen «Det fantastiske treet» i atriet ved Norsk Skogmuseum. Fotografiet er tatt fra et av de nye innvendige galleriene i dette rommet 7. oktober 2015. Det viser det sju og en halv meter høye fiberoptiske treet som er plassert midt i rommet. Vi ser også den stiliserte rotstrukturen som er markert på golvet, som etter hvert skal få et innhold som kan betraktes gjennom solide glassplater. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var golvet preget av redskapen til Kjell Arne Grøtbekklien og Tore Skyrud, som arbeidet med golvet, men ikke var tilstede akkurat da fotografiet ble tatt. Det var derimot utstillingsarkitekt Elisabet Løvold, som sto på golvet og så opp mot trekrona. Elisabet har, sammen med Ida Kristine Teien, hatt prosjektlederansvar for denne utstillingen. På veggen over Elisabet, øverst til venstre i bildet, ser vi en transparent glassvegg med flerfarget strekdekor som skal illustrere strukturen i trærnes blader.
