Johan Sønnik Andersen ble født på garden Seberg i Ringsaker, som sønn av lege Einar Andersen (1864-1954) og kona Asløv, f. Johnsen (1865-1961). At familien bodde i Ringsaker skyldtes nok at den unge medisineren hadde familie der. Sønniks bestefar, Christen Andersen (1825–93) hadde vært både lensmann og fogd med bosted i denne bygda. Da gutten var fem år flyttet familien til Lærdal i Sogn, hvor Einar Andersen var distriktslege i perioden 1904–17. Seinere kom han til Oppland som lege. Samtidig flyttet sønnen Sønnik til Oddernes ved Kristiansand for å gå ettårig skogskole. Her tok han eksamen våren 1918. Med skogskolekompetansen fikk han en stilling som driftsassistent i Ringsaker allmenning. For å kunne øke sin kompetanse ved skogbruksstudier på Norges landbrukshøgskole tok han examen artium i norsk og matematikk i 1922. Sønnik Andersen tok avsluttende eksamen ved Norges landbrukshøgskoles skogbruksavdeling 1925. Deretter etablerte han sitt eget firma, «Lillehammer skogkontor», som tilbød oppmålings- og taksasjonstjenester. Dette ble neppe noen glimrende forretning, for i 1928 vendte han tilbake til stillingen som driftsassistent i Ringsaker allmenning. Dette levebrødet hadde Sønnik Andersen fram til 1935. Deretter fulgte et par år som skogforvalter i Eidskog kommuneskoger inntil han 1937 ble ansatt i en nyopprettet stilling som arbeidsinspektør i skogbruket. I 1951 avanserte Sønnik Andersen til byråsjef i Skogdirektoratet i Landbruksdepartementet, hvor han i 1958 fikk status som underdirektør.
Bakgrunnen for at Sønnik Andersen fikk den karrieren har fikk var et pionerprosjekt han tok fatt på kort tid etter at han var blitt forstkandidat. Vinteren 1926 gjorde Sønnik Andersen en levekårsundersøkelse i skogskoier i Hedmark og Oppland, etter oppfordring fra faren, fylkeslege Einar Andersen i Oppland, og fylkeslege Vollert Hille (1863-1934) i Hedmark. Prosjektet ble støttet av Den norske Nationalforening mot Tuberkulosen. Sønniks far, Einar Andersen, skrev et sammendrag av undersøkelsen. Sammendraget ble publisert i «Meddelelser fra den Norske Nationalforening mot Tuberkulosen», nummer 84 i 1927. Undersøkelsen i Hedmark og Oppland satte fokus på en del viktige forhold, men for å få klargjort disse ytterligere, ble det søkt om støtte til videre undersøkelser i Nord-Trøndelag, ved Bangdalsbruket, hvor man hadde innført såkalt felleshusholdning med kokke i skogstuene. A/S Kneipbrødfabrikken og Statssekretær Jacob Aall og hustrus legat støttet prosjektet, og Sønnik Andersen var på feltarbeid i Bangdalsbrukets distrikt i november 1927. De to undersøkelsene ble publisert sammen i et hefte med tittelen «Undersøkelse av skogshytter og skogsarbeidernes levevilkår» i 1932. Heftet ble utgitt på Den norske lægeforenings forlag. Sønnik Andersen figurerte som forfatter, men faren Einar Andersen hadde bidratt med kommenterte kostholdsanalyser over 12 av de 101 sidene publikasjonen besto av. Sønnik Andersen innledet presentasjonen av undersøkelsene med noen linjer om hvor mange som hadde skogsarbeid og tømmerfløting som hovedinntekstkilde. Deretter orienterte han om hvilke lover som regulerte arbeidet i denne sektoren, før han beskrev ulike sider ved skogsarbeidet. Heftets største kapittel handler om det Sønnik Andersen kalte «skogshyttene» - som på Østlandet gikk under betegnelsen «koier» og i Trøndelag ble kalt «skogstuer». Deretter beskriver han kostholdet i disse husværene om kostholdet, både fra et økonomisk og et ernæringsmessig perspektiv. På dette siste området suppleres han altså av faren Einar Andersen, før Sønnik avslutter med å orientere om forholdene i Sverige med hovedvekt på «skogshärbärgesinspektören» og hans virksomhet.
