Dette fotografiet ble innsamlet til bokprosjekter tidligere direktør ved Norsk Skogmuseum, Yngve Astrup, har arbeidet med, der den gjennomgående tematikken er norske investorers og skogbruksaktørers engasjementer i nordvestrussisk trelastindustri fra cirka 1880 til 1928. Bildet skal være fra et av albumene etter forstmannen Richard Thorkildsen.
«Bestyreren av Statens Planteskole på Sønsterud i Åsnes, skogforvalter Richard Thorkildsen, er død nær 64 år gammel. I alle årene etter krigen har han bestyrt planteskolen på Sønsterud og han var en av foregangsmennene på skogplantingens område. Han var alltid full av nye ideer, og han gjennomførte dem også i praksis.
Richard Thorkildsen var født på Jevnaker. Han hadde en solid utdannelse som forstmann. Etter endt eksamen ved Evenstad skogskole, gikk han Landbrukshøyskolen, hvor han ble uteksaminert i 1923. Som ferdig forstkandidat var han i den første tiden skogassistent hos Jens Hals i Åmot, deretter skogassistent ved Nordmarken gods. I 1926 dro han til Russland og hadde i en 6-års periode flere ledende stillinger innen skogbruket. I årene 1930-32 var han assistent i skogteknologi ved Skogteknisk høyskole i Arkangelsk. Fra 1935 til 1945 oppholdt han seg i Sverige, og i 1943 grunnla han sammen med Lars Evensen en norsk skogskole i Sverige for skogsarbeidere som kom over under krigen.
I 1945 kom han til Sønsterud, hvor han ble bestyrer for planteskolen. Hele sin faglige dyktighet la han ned i arbeidet der, og han var alltid våken for rasjonalisering. Hans agitasjon overfor skogeierne til økt planting er velkjent over hele Østlandet.
I Åsnes var han formann i styret for kommuneskogene, han var med i fylkets yrkesskolenemnd og representant for Solør Kraftlag. Skogforvalter Richard Thorkildsen var en mann med mange gode personlige egenskaper. Han var humørfylt og lun, og hyggelig mot alle han møtte. Hans store venneskare vil beklage og føle et stort savn ved hans alt for tidlige bortgang.»

Heftet «Norske pionerer i Kvitsjøens skogindustri fra 1880 til 1930» er utstyrt med følgende introduksjonstekst:
«Norsk Skogmuseums skrifter nr. 4 omhandler nordmenns skogindustrielle satsing ved Kvitsjøen fra 1880-1930. I Norsk Skogmuseums skrifter nr. 3 gikk turen til Sverige og Finland. Denne gangen går altså reisen videre østover til Nordvest-Russland. Her fantes uutnyttede skogsressurser og utsikter til betydelig fortjeneste. Allerede før forrige århundreskifte var norske aktører eiere av sagbruk ved Kvitsjøen. De virkelig tunge investeringen ble tatt i tiårene etter 1900. Nordmannen Frederik Prytz står fram som en av de sentrale skikkelsene i dette miljøet. Det største treforedlingsselskapet i Norge, Union & Co., samarbeidet i over 15 år med Prytz om investeringer i russisk skogindustri. Den russiske revolusjonen i 1917 endret alt. Etter at kommunistene kom til makten, ble et iherdig arbeid satt i gang for å redde den vestlige kapitalen. Tidsepokene er forskjellige, likevel er det, som forfatteren skriver, «slående likheter mellom erfaringene fra tidlig på 1900-tallet til de utfordringene utlendinger møter ved å investere i dagens Russland.»
Yngve Astrup og Jens Petter Nielsen, som har redigert Egil Abrahamsens manuskript om hans erfaringer fra sin virksomhet for norske trelastinvestorer i Nordvest-Russland tidlig på 1900-tallet, har utstyrt bokas bakside med følgende introduksjonstekst:
«På begynnelsen av 1900-tallet så norske forretningsmenn store muligheter i de enorme, nesten urørte skogene i Nord-Russland og Sibir, og det ble foretatt store investeringer i Russland like frem til revolusjonen i 1917. En av dem som prøvde å skape seg et liv innenfor trelast- og sagbruksnæringen i Nord-Russland, var Egil Abrahamsen (1893-1977) fra Larvik. «Vinter i Seregovoskogen» er hans personlige og engasjerende beretning om livet i Russland over en 20-årsperiode fra han reiste dit som femtenåring.
Egil Abrahamsen skriver levende om hvordan den norske trelastproduksjonen i Nord-Russland var organisert, fra tømmeret ble hugget dypt inne i de nordrussiske skogene, dernest tørket – og så fløtet på små og store elver, ofte over gigantiske avstander, nordover til Arkhangelsk og Onega. Vi finner mange skarpe iakttakelser om folkelivet i Russland, og får også høre om de dramatiske årene under revolusjonen og borgerkrigen, da hans eget liv mer enn en gang sto på spill.»
