Olav Kaveldiget, som da dette fotografiet ble tatt var statskonsulent i Landbruksdepartementet med skogkultur som arbeidsfelt, viser planting av torvbandplanter på ei hogstflate i granskog, antakelig i Eidsvoll prestegardsskog i Akershus. Fotografiet ble tatt under en faglig demonstrasjon i 1977, da nye typer dekkrotplanter og redskapene som ble brukt når disse plantene skulle ut på kulturfeltene i norske skoger fortsatt var under utprøving. Metoden med skogplanteproduksjon i torvband ble utviklet av finske Pentti Nisula i midten av 1960-åra. Her til lands fikk denne plantetypen en varm talsmann i Åge Froland, daværende bestyrer ved Sønsterud planteskole i Åsnes i Hedmark. Han var klar over at svenskene hadde utviklet pluggrotplanter som de med gode resultater hadde plantet ut på markberedte arealer, men mente at torvbandplantene ville være mer robuste i et norsk skogbruk som var preget av vanskeligere terreng og mindre markberedning. Følgelig fikk han i gang produksjon av torvbandplanter på Sønsterud tidlig i 1970-åra. Til disse plantene fikk mekanikeren Per Ulven på Tangen i Stange (Hedmark) i oppdrag å utvikle planteutstyr. Han leverte plantespett med kileformete blad og et tverrstag som plantøren kunne sette foten på for å drive kilen ned i marka. Etter å ha opparbeidet et plantehull på denne måten, skulle torvbandplantene føres forsiktig langs kilen og ned i det opparbeidete hullet, slik Kaveldiget viser på dette fotografiet. Til venstre ser vi ei spesiell plantekorg som Per Ulvin utviklet for torvbandplantene. Denne plantetypen ble etter hvert fortrengt av de såkalte pluggplantene, som ble produsert i plastbrett med torv i plantehullene og utplantet ved hjelp av hullpipe.

Dette fotografiet inngår i ei samling der fotografene var driftsteknisk orienterte medarbeidere i Det norske skogforsøksvesen, som i 1972 skiftet navn til Norsk institutt for skogforskning (NISK). Bildene er stort sett tatt under befaringer og forsøksprosjekter som dette skogteknologiske forskingsmiljøet organiserte eller var delaktige i perioden fra 1947 til slutten av 1980-åra. Samlinga, som består av en del tematisk orienterte permer med innlimte kopier samt film (negativer og fargedias) og opptaksjournaler, ble overdratt fra Institutt for skog og landskap ved Universitetet for miljø- og biovitenskap (UMB) til Norsk Skogmuseum (NSM) høsten 2008. Etter fusjonen med Norges veterinærhøgskole i 2014 giverne av arkivet skiftet navn til «Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet» (NMBU). Kontrakt om overdragelsen av materialet finnes i Norsk Skogmuseums avtalearkiv. Dette motivet er fra en perm merket «241 Skogkulturarbeider, planting, manuelt». Negativnummeret er 24148.
