Olav Kaveldiget, som da fotografiet ble tatt var statskonsulent med skogkultur som arbeidsfelt i Landbruksdepartementet, demonstrerer planting av den nye plantetypen – «pluggrotplanter» – som raskt vant innpass i norsk skogbruk i andre halvdel av 1970-åra. Da dette fotografiet ble tatt var Kaveldiget i ferd med å feste et pottebrett på den såkalte «hoftemeisen» han skulle bære plantene på. Den nye typen dekkrotplanter, som ble levert fra skogplanteskolene i brett av hardplast (polyetylen), vanligvis med 95 planter på hvert brett. Hoftemeisen besto av et magebelte og ei skulderreim, som skulle forebygge at magebeltet seg nedover under tyngden av plantebrettet. I dette tilfellet var hoftemeisen utstyrt med et metallbrett som plantebrettet var festet til. Under planting brukte man ei «spaserstokkformet» hullpipe som ble styrt med den ene handa og tråkket ned i marka ved hjelp av den ene foten. På denne måten lagde plantøren et hull som passet akkurat til torvpluggene som planterøttene var forankret i. Deretter tok han ei plante fra brettet og plasserte den i plantehullet. Fotografiet ble tatt under en faglig demonstrasjon i 1977, da pluggrotplantene og redskapene som ble brukt når slike planter skulle ut på kulturfeltene i norske skoger fortsatt var under utprøving.

Dette fotografiet inngår i ei samling der fotografene var driftsteknisk orienterte medarbeidere i Det norske skogforsøksvesen, som i 1972 skiftet navn til Norsk institutt for skogforskning (NISK). Bildene er stort sett tatt under befaringer og forsøksprosjekter som dette skogteknologiske forskingsmiljøet organiserte eller var delaktige i perioden fra 1947 til slutten av 1980-åra. Samlinga, som består av en del tematisk orienterte permer med innlimte kopier samt film (negativer og fargedias) og opptaksjournaler, ble overdratt fra Institutt for skog og landskap ved Universitetet for miljø- og biovitenskap (UMB) til Norsk Skogmuseum (NSM) høsten 2008. Etter fusjonen med Norges veterinærhøgskole i 2014 giverne av arkivet skiftet navn til «Norges miljø- og biovitenskapelige universitet» (NMBU). Kontrakt om overdragelsen av materialet finnes i Norsk Skogmuseums avtalearkiv. Dette motivet er fra en perm merket «241 Skogkulturarbeider, planting, manuelt». Negativnummeret er 24121.
