Atnvassdraget har sine øverste kilder i Rondane, nord for Elgevasshøe. Derfra renner elva Atna mot Atnsjøen, som ligger cirka 700 meter over havet. Ved Atnas utløp i sørenden av denne cirka 9 kilometer lange sjøen har det siden slutten av 1850-åra vært et damanlegg og et fall i elva som har gjort det mulig for folk i grenda omkring elveutløpet å utnytte energien i det hurtigstrømmende vannet. Nedenfor Atnbrua renner elva først østover, deretter sørover, til den møter elva Setninga, som kommer vestfra, via Vuludalen og Sollia. Like nedenfor renner Storbekken inn i Atna fra sør. Fra Storbekkmoen renner Atna med forholdsvis jevnt fall sørøstover gjennom Atndalen. I den nedre delen av dette dalføret renner elva Hira inn i Atna fra vest. Denne elva har sine kilder i skog- og myrområdene lengst øst i Ringebu kommune. Cirka 3 kilometer nedenfor Hiras innløp i Atna når vassdraget Glomma ved garden Atnosen, ikke langt fra kommunegrensa mot Rendalen.
Atna sør for Atnsjøen har vært ei betydelig fløtingselv. Også i de nevnte sidevassdragene har det vært fløting, i Storbekken riktignok bare unntaksvis og for lenge siden (på 1800-tallet). Her kunne det nemlig ta flere sesonger før tømmeret nådde ned til Atna. Heller ikke i Hira var fløtinga årviss, og også i Setninga var det sesonger uten fløting. Forslaget om å bygge en fløtingsdam ved Atnbrua ble reist av Ole Hervig. Han var fullmektig for trelasthandler P. Gregersen, som hadde forpaktet Solliskogene med mye tømmer som han ville drive ut og omsette i penger. Hervig så for seg at man ved å demme opp Atnsjøen tidlig på våren kunne etablere et stort vannmagasin, som skulle brukes til å slippe på vann som gav jevnt høy vannføring nedover i Atna så lenge fløtingssesongen varte. Hervig greide åpenbart ikke å skape entusiasme for denne ideen blant lokale skogeiere. I 1857 skrev Christiania Tømmerdirektions fløtingsfullmektig i denne regionen følgende: «Da man, efterat have hørt Storelvedølernes Mening, maa antage at det neppe vil komme til Enighed i dette Foretagende, der vistnok vil blive til fælleds Gavn for samtlige Tømmereiere ved Atna, henstilles det til Gregersen for egen Regning eller i Fellesskab med Hr. Bruun at opføre Dam i Atnesjøens søndre Ende.» Storelvdølene vegret seg altså mot de kostnadene dambyggingsprosjektet innebar. «Hr. Bruun», Gregersens og Hervigs alliansepartner, var landhandler Kristian Bruun på Negård i Stor-Elvdal. Også Bruun hadde skog der første etappe på tømmerets veg mot sagbrukene og trelastmarkedene gikk på vannet i Atnvassdraget. Gregersen og Bruun søkte om å få låne penger til dambygginga fra Christiania Tømmerdirektion, trelasthandlernes fløtingsorganisasjon for den delen av Glommavassdraget som lå nord for innsjøen Øyeren. Under forutsetning av at dette lyktes, aksepterte de øvrige skogeierne å bidra til nedbetaling av fløtingsutgiftene gjennom avgifter på tømmeret. Da dette var avklart viste det seg imidlertid at Tømmerdirektionens kasse var tom. Heller ikke Bruun hadde stor nok kontantbeholdning til å kunne forskuttere utgiftene til damby ggingsarbeidet. Dermed kvilte prosjektet på Gregersen, som ble overbevist om at dammen «gandske sikkert, hvis den opføres godt, vil svare Regning og maaske spare Tusinder». Målet var her, som i Tysla og Mistra der det ble bygd dammer samtidig, å få redusere tida det tok å få tømmeret ned til sagbrukene nederst i Glommavassdraget fra tre-fire til en sesong. Atndammen ble bygd, og i 1859 satset optimistiske skogeierne på å organisere fløtinga i en avdeling i stedet for to, slik det hadde vært vanlig. Dammen effektiviserte framdriften av tømmeret, men tømmerleverandørene gikk etter hvert tilbake til å organisere fløtingsarbeidet i to avdelinger med hver sin fløterhusbond. Atndammen fikk skader alt under 1860-flommen, og da forsøkte man å få landhandler Peder Hovind på Sorknes i Åmot til å hjelpe Gregersen med å bekoste reparasjonsarbeidet. Også Hovind hadde tømmerdrifter i Atndalen. Dammen ble istandsatt, og den fungerte etter hensikten. Bygge- og vedlikeholdskostnadene ble imidlertid belastet fløtingsvirket, og størrelsen på «fløtningstolden» økte med avstanden fra Atnas utøp i Glomma. Differansene mellom avgiftssatsene i ulike deler av vassdraget ble et stadig tilbakevendende stridstema i de årlige møtene skogeierne langs vassdraget hadde i forkant av fløtingssesongen, der de som bodde ved den øvre delen av vassdraget ofte mobiliserte for å hevde sine interesser. I 1878 vedtok et møte mellom skogeierne langs Atnvassdraget med 28 mot 11 stemmer å organisere samarbeidet om framdriften av tømmeret i en fellesfløtingsforening. De mest profilerte motstanderne mot dette samarbeidet var et par karer fra Trønnes, som fant det vanskelig å aksepterer at foreningen skulle betale avgifter til landhandler Bruun, som på denne tida eide og vedlikeholdt på Atndammen. Disse aktørene hadde sannsynligvis skog ved den nedre delen av vassdraget, der det var gode utsikter til å få det fram til Glomma før «bakenden» pasaserte Atnosen uansett damvann.
Fløtingsarbeidet i Atna var ikke ufarlig. I 1866 døde to unge menn, Jørgen Jensen fra Atndalen og Ole Jensen fra Folldal, under fløtinga i Atna, og fløtingsbetjenten meldte at «11 andre havde nær maattet dele Skjæbne med dem». I 1904 skrev kanaldirektør Gunnar Sætren at «Søndre Atna er aldeles sikker og ligesaa Nordre Atna, naar der ikke er for meget tømmer og dammen istand.» Når kanaldirektøren her brukte ordet «sikker» tenkte han ikke på arbeidsforholdene for fløterne, men på sannsynlighetene for at leverandørenes og tømmerkjøperne fikk tømmeret gjennom vassdraget i løpet av en sesong. Tidlig på 1900-tallet begynte Atndammen å bli forfallen. Arthur Mathiesen, som på dette tidspunktet skal ha eid damretten, var positiv til fornyelse. Statsallmenningen og Christiania Tømmerdirektion bidro med penger. En ny dam, med damkar av stein ble reist i 1916. Det var Odd Daae, en av ingeniørene i Tømmerdirektionen, som prosjekterte anlegget og hadde ansvar for byggeledelsen. Da dammen sto ferdig viste det seg at den hevet vannspeilet i Atnsjøen noe mer enn grunneierne hadde sett for seg. Følgelig ble det juridiske tvister hvor Tømmerdirektionen tapte i to rettsinstanser. Det ble inngått forlik om denne saken i 1925. Tidlig på 1900-tallet ble det også bygd ei fagverksbru av jern, tilpasset nye trafikale behov ved Atndammen. Denne brua ble sprengt i forbindelse med den tyske invasjonen i 1940. Etter krigen bygde vegvesenet ny bru, med fyllinger som var høyere enn de gamle. Dette innebar ytterligere heving av vannspeilet i Atnsjøen.
Fløtingsaktiviteten i Atnvassdraget var stor. Dette gjaldt særlig den nedre delen av Atna, som var omgitt av mye skog. Høyere oppe var tilveksten langsommere, og tidlig på 1900-tallet var det enkelte år det ikke ble innmeldt fløtingstømmer derfra. I sidevassdragene Setninga og Hira kan det se ut til at skogeierne, som finansierte fløtinga, har samordnet driftene for å oppnå tilfredsstillende økonomi i fløtinga. De sesongene det var fløting i disse vassdragene ble det i hvert fall levert forholdsvis store kvanta. I 1950-åra ble det ekspedert 1 138 517 tømmerstokker via Atna. 66 % av det innmelte fløtingsvirket i Atnvassdraget utislått i Nedre Atna, 19 % i Øvre Atna, 13 % i Setninga og 2 % i Hira. 1958 ble siste fløtingssesong i Hira. Skillet mellom Øvre og Nedre Atna gikk ved Grytoset.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs. Dette er antakelig direktøren i Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening, Johs. Johannesen. Til høyre for ham en mørkkledd mann, Tor G. Waal, som var fløtingsinspektør i øvre del av Glomma-vassdraget. En tredje mann, som står til høyre med ansiktet vendt nedover og dels bort fra fotografen, er foreløpig ikke identifisert. Bakenfor (og nedenfor) et elvelandskap som delvis er gjengrodd med lauvkratt. Helt bakerst og øverst i bildeflata deler av en bygningskonstruksjon, antakelig sagbruket ved Atnbrua.
Dette fotografiet er hentet fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med notatblokk, lydbandopptaker og kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten tømmertransport til vanns hadde vært. En del installasjoner i og ved elver og innsjøer måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noen eiendommer og kulturminner ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum etter at fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. Materialet ble enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert.
