«Veldige tømmermengder blokerer Glåma ved Funnefoss.
Tømmeret står i kompakt masse 1 km. opover elven og 60-70 fløtere gjør livsfarlige og nesten håløse forsøk på å løsne lunnen.
Dammen ved kraftverket står i fare for å sprenges når tømmeret går.

I Glåma mellem Funnefoss kraftstasjon og Sæterstøa sundsted har tømmeret i løpet av de siste dager hopet seg op og pakket elva fullstendig igjen over en strekning av en hel kilometer. Tømmeret begynte å hope sig op ovenfor dammene ved kraftstasjonen den 17. mai kl. 6.30 om morgenen og siden har det øket og øket. Slik som situasjonen var i går kveld kan den sammenlignes med den kolossale tømmerophopning på samme sted i 1918, og situasjonen er med et mildt uttrykk faretruende.
Vår medarbeider på Skarnes reiste igår eftermiddag ned til Funnefoss hvor vi også knipset noen billeder på stedet. Selve tømmermassene får man først øie på et stykke ovenfor kraftstasjonen- Vi trodde opriktig talt at vi hadde reist aprilsnarr da vi stoppet utenfor kraftstasjonens kontorbygning og ikke kunde opdage noen tømmermasser som egentlig var faretruende. Det viste sig nemlig at den nederste del av tømmermassen hadde løsnet og drevet vekk med strømmen i går eftermiddag og så å si bare «bruddstykker» av tømmer hang igjen i strykene. Men litt lenger op – ca. 5-800 meter fra dammene – satt tømmeret i en kompakt masse, stuet på hverandre tvers over elven i 1 km.s lengde opover mot sundstedet. Det var et syn for guder å se disse veldige tømmermasser pakket på hverandre. Iblandt var tømmeret pakket så voldsomt sammen at tylftevis av tømmer hadde reist sig på enden og en mengde stokker hadde knekket av som fyrstikker. Glåma går jo nu i disse dager med sterk kraft ut og tømmeret har lagret sig på hverandre, hulter til bulter i høiden og dybden. Det er voldsomme krefter som har vært på ferde her, og hvad menneskehender skal kunne evne og utrette mot dette håpløse virvar er ikke godt å si.
Inne på strandbredden sto det biler og fullt av skuelyste, og selvsagt hadde allerede Oslo-pressen vært på ferde med kamera og utsendte medarbeidere. Nederst i tømmermassen drev det fullt av fløtere med haker og fløterredskap og arbeidet med å løsne tømmeret og det hadde virkelig lykkes å lage en kile inn i tømmermassen omtrent midt ute i elven. Arbeidet lot imidlertid ikke til å monne større og man var i ferd med å kjøre en dampwinch ned til elvebredden på vestsiden av Glåma og ved hjelp av denne og 5 kvart toms stålvaier av noen hundre meters lengde vilde man forsøke å rykke tømmer løs. Arbeidet skulde foregå på den måte at man festet vaieren i tømmeret og rykket brokker av tømmermassen løs nedentil. Man var imidlertid opmerksom på at det bare blir ubetydelige mengder man får løs om gangen. Man brukte den samme fremgangsmåte som i 1918 da man var oppe i akkurat samme situasjon. Den gang var to wincher på hver sin side av elven i sving og det lyktes til slutt å få tømmermassene løs.
Arbeidet er naturligvis forbundet med stor fare. Det kunde være en 60-70 fløtere som drev ute i tømmermassen og løsnet stokker igår eftermiddag, og et par av dem uttalte til vår medarbeider at de hadde merket at tømmermassen beveget sig svakt onsdag eftermiddag klokken 4 og i går en gang ved 3-tiden. Skulde denne tømmermassen løsne med ett brak vilde den ikke alene kunne true dammene i Funnefoss kraftstasjon, men de vilde knuse hele fløtermannskapet som arbeider ute i elven med haker. Det er imidlertid den omstendighet å hefte sig ved at elven er forholdsvis smal nederst i tømmermassen og den vider sig mer og mer ut opover mot Sæterstøa sundsted og det minker naturligvis i høi grad faren for at tømmeret plutselig kan komme i drift. Omtrent midt i tømmermassen er elven grunn og her mener man at tømmeret sitter fast i stener og fjell på elvebunnen et langt stykke. Faren for at hele massen kan løsne i en gang er derfor minimal, men dermed er det naturligvis ikke sagt at det ikke er fare på ferde. Selv om bare en brøkdel av disse hundre tusen stokker løsner i en gang er det sannelig ikke godt å si at det løper av uten risiko for mennesker og verdier.
Vår utsendte medarbeider traff nede på elvekanten fløtningsinspektør Greni og talte med ham. Han hadde det naturligvis travelt og var svært opspilt over «katastrofen» om vi så må si, men mellem alle samtalene han hadde med fløterne og gav ordrer, lyktes det allikevel å få i gang en samtale.
Herr Greni fortalte at tømmeret hadde begynt å pakke sig sammen 17. mai om morgenen. Det var lagt en dobbel lense mot østfossen – altså på østsiden av elva, men lensen røk onsdag da tømmeret omsider blev løsnet. Man var i arbeide 17. mai med å tappe tømmer, men det var jo ikke så svært store mannskaper det lyktes å mobilisere denne dagen. Tømmeret hopet og hopet sig derfor paa hinannen. Mestparten kom i løpet av onsdag natt og kommer fremdeles, men alt onsdag morgen gav Glommen fellesfløtning ordre om at alt utislag i hele Glåmas løp til Rena og alle tverrelver oventil måtte stoppes. Denne ordre er selvsagt efterkommet, men alt tømmer som alt er kommet ut i Glåma fra Rena og nedover er jo i drift og situasjonen nede ved Sæterstøa er fremdeles den at der kommer tømmer tømmer og hoper sig på forstoppelsen der nede. Men allerede nu begynner man å merke at tømmeret i Glåma minker.
Hvad vil man gjøre med denne katastrofale forstoppelsen her? spurte vi.
Tja, sa Greni, det er ikke godt å si. Foreløpig arbeider vi med 60-70 mann, hvorav en stor styrke fra Fetsund lenser er trenede fløtere, men De ser jo selv best hvad vi kan utrette med dette. Det er jo alt for lite mannskap, men nu skal vi da prøve hvad vi kan med winchen. Det lyktes oss i 1918 å få tømmeret løs på den måte.
Men må der ikke sprenges med dynamitt her?
Nei, det går nok ikke, nei.
Blev der satt inn store arbeidsstyrker fra begynnelsen?
Det kom 24 mann fra Fetsund og 13 fra Årnes, og meget er også gjort, men hvad vi kan utrette når der kommer slike masser og legger sig op som det kom onsdag natt og utover? Nei, sier Greni opgitt, dette ser jeg sandelig mørkt på.
Og mer tid hadde ikke herr Greni å ofre på oss.
Før vi forlot stedet for dagens sensasjon beså vi fløternes campingplass; hvor der lå sengklær og ryggsekker innover i skogen på strandbredden og fløtere og fløtere og andre satt inne på land og kokte kaffe og pratet. Ute i elven drev det en anselig styrke med haker og slepte håpløsheten. Man kan nu gå på tømmeret over elven på en strekning av 1 km.s lengde og tømmeret legger sig stadig nærmere Sæterstøa sundsted, hvor der som bekjendt er en motordrevet ferje for bilende og kjørende og gående folk. Sundmannen mente dog ikke at sundstedet vilde bli blokert ennu på 1 a 2 dager i verste fall. I 1918 stod tømmeret langt ovenfor sundstedet, så situasjonen var iallfall ikke verre nu.
Vårt Skarnes-kontor forsøkte i går å få fløtningsdirektør Johannesen i tale, men det lyktes ikke.
Klokken 7 igår kveld talte vi med Funnefoss kraftstasjon, men det var ingen forandringer i situasjonen da. Winchen var ennu ikke på plass og det var tvilsomt om man fikk gjort noe med den i går kveld. Derimot kommer den i virksomhet i dag.
Vi fikk den oplysning at der er mye mer tømmer der nede nu enn i 1918 og da arbeidet man en hel måned med å få tømmeret løst. Man står altså foran et både kostbart og gigantisk arbeide.»
Dagen etter, lørdag 21. mai 1938 meldte Kongsvinger Arbeiderblad følgende:
«2 millioner stokker i tømmersetten ved Sæterstøa.
Ikke så mye tømmer i drift siden 1921.
Usedvanlig mye flyttemerket tømmer i år.
En av våre medarbeidere traff igår distriktssjef Per Åsness på toget og samtalen dreiet sig temmelig snart om den katastrofale tømmersett i Glåma ved Seterstøa. Åsness var på tur nedover for å konstatere hvor vidt forbudet mot utislag blir respektert. Han forteller i samtalens løp at det ikke har vært så mye tømmer i drift i Glåma på en gang siden 1921. I de nordre bygder er fløtningen først nu kommet i gang og pågår nu for full stim. Imidlertid blir elveløpet sperret ved lenser der hvor det er smult vann for å hindre at setten ved Funnefoss skal bli større enn det uundgåelige.
Hvorledes stiller det sig med vannføringen nettop nu?
Det er jo forholdsvis kaldt om nettene nu, men det er masser av sne i fjellet, så dersom det sdetter inn med mildvær for alvor kan vi nok få en ganske pen flom iår også selv om de lavere strøk er snebare.
Langs begge sider av Glåma ligger store tømmerlunner og herr Åsness forteller at det aldri har vært så mye flyttemerket tømmer som iår. Det fører med sig at folk er engstelige for at de ikke skal få slått det uti rett tid og derfor var det tendens til ikke å respektere forbudet mot utislag. Imidlertid har vi nu avertert så nu blir det vel slutt med utislaget.
Ved besøk på «åstedet» konstaterer vi at elveløpet ved sundstedet på Seterstøa ennu ikke er sperret, men elva er fylt med tømmer nesten like opptil. Og ved å sammenholde de tømmermengder som her kom drivende med de enkeltvise stokker det lyktes fløtermannskapet å rykke løs, kommer vi til det resultat at setten ved Funnefoss uvegerlig må bli større og større. Vi konstaterer også at dampwinchen som det var stilt så store forhåpninger til, står uvirksom på stranden.
Ute på tømmeret, like ut på ytterste kant, sliter fløtermannskapene i hakeskaftene, synger og drar, for omsider å få løsnet en stokk.
Det må være et umenneskelig slit og vi spør uvilkårlig efter dagprisen, som vi får oppgitt til kr. 1,26 pr. time.
Ikke noe tillegg for den livsfare de utsetter dere for da?
Nei, man betaler ikke for menneskers liv.
Det kommer langsomt og ledsaget av et talende blikk.
Fløterne anslår antallet av stokker til 2 millioner og at det er mange skal være visst. Tømmeret ligger 3 meter over vannflaten i overt 1 km.s lengde. Det skulde vel si noe slikt som at tømmersetten er like dyp under vannet. Altså en kompakt tømmermasse i 6 meters dybde.
Vi spør en fløter hvor lenge han tror det vil ta å få løst tømmeret, men får det svar at det er alt for mange forhold som spiller inn til å kunne si noe bestemt om det. Men en mannskapsstyrke på et par hundre mann kan det la sig gjøre å rense elven i løpet av en måned, men det kan også ta to måneder. Han forteller videre at det bare var 6 mann som arbeidet ovenfor Funnefoss 17. mai da tømmeret begynte å sette sig. Hadde det vært større mannskap kunde katastrofen vært undgått.
Å ha noen formening om de ekstrautgifter dette vil påføre fløtningen er vanskelig for utenforstående, men det blir adskillige tusener er sikkert. Det måtte lønne sig for fløtningsdireksjonen å benytte sig av flere folk før katastrofen var der.
I 1918 hadde man samme situasjon. En lærepenge som vel burde vært kostbar nok. Det er noe som heter å spare på skillingen mens daleren går.
Det slo oss forresten med forbauselse at elveløpet ovenfor ferjestedet ved Seterstøa ikke var sperret med lenser. Her vil nu ferjeforbindelsen snart være stoppet, mens trykket på setten blir større og større for hver time som går.
Mannskapsstyrken ved Funnefoss er et par hundre mann og øker stadig. Igår kveld kom det en buss med 25 fløtere helt fra Hof.

Ved 7-tiden igår kveld hadde vårt Skarnes-kontor en samtale med Funnefoss kraftstasjon angående situasjonen i den veldige tømmerlunnen som har festet sig der nede. Vi fikk imidlertid den oplysning at forholdene var omtrent som torsdag kveld. Der er løsnet bare ubetydelige tømmerkvanta i lunnen. Winchen har vært i gang, men den har ikke kunnet utrette noe nevneverdig og i går kveld holdt man på med å bygge en tømmerflåte som den skulle plasseres på for at den kan flyttes opover langs elvekanten efter hvert som man får vekk tømmer. Man brukte den samme fremgangsmåte for 20 år siden, men den gang som sagt med to wincher.
Igår kveld var man dessuten i ferd med å frakte op en kraftig motorbåt som kan assistere med å løsne tømmer.
På spørsmål om det kan være noen fare for kraftstasjonens dammer, hører vi at faren er ganske stor hvis der løsner store tømmerpartier i en gang. Dammene er gamle og av tre og vil ikke kunne tåle noe større påkjenning. Nu er imidlertid elven så stor at dammene ikke er synbare over vannstanden, og selv om der går vil det ikke bety noen øieblikkelig stans for stasjonen under den nuværende høie vannstand. Derimot er det verre skade skjedd om var-grinene, som beskytter turbinene og siler rusk og lignende som flyter i elven, går i stykker av tømmeret. Og det er det endog stor fare for.
Funnefoss sliperi er for tiden ikke i gang. Det har stått i 5 uker på grunn av fulle lagre.»
Samme dato, 21. mai 1938, hadde Indre Akershus Blad et oppslag om tømmeropphopinga ovenfor Funnefossen med litt andre tall:
«Henimot et milion tømmerstokker har satt sig fast i Glomma.
Mellem Funnefoss og Seterstøa stasjon koker elven av tømmer.
150 mann arbeider på å løse det. Men arbeidet vil ta flere uker.
De tømmermasser som har satt sig fast i åpningen mellem lensene ovenfor Funnefoss tresliperi i Ners på Romerike øker stadig. Og elven står i et eneste kok.
Her arbeider nu 150 mann på å løse tømmeret, forteller man på Funnefoss. Og flere kommer til. Men slik som det hele har låst sig fast vil det utvilsomt måtte fra flere måneder før man får løst floken.
Hvor store tømmermengder ligger fast?
Det sies at det skal være mellem en halv og en million stokker. Og mere siger til efterhvert.
Men hvad er grunnen til denne voldsomme ophopning?
Jo, her var litt regn i begynnelsen av uken og alle benyttet anledningen og veltet tømmeret ut i elven for å få det frem. Følgen blev en masseophopning og tømmeret sitter nu fast på en strekn ing av over 14 kilometer. Det blokerte avsnitt når nemlig helt op mot Seterstøa stasjon. Stokkene stues sammen og somme steder ligger haugene tre meter over vannflaten. På sine steder velter de også innover på breddene. Når sammenstuingen foregår, knekkes stokkene som fyrstikker.
Arbeidet med å løsne tømmeret ledes af fløtningsinspektør Greni. Han ser nokså mørkt på situasjonen.
Lokalkjente folk forteller, at man aldri har hatt en så veldig ophopning av tømmer ved Funnefos.»
Mandag 23. mai 1938 hadde Kongsvinger Arbeiderblad dette oppslaget:
«Tømmersetten ved Sæterstøa tiltar.
Fløterne fra Fetsund forlanger ekstratillegg som ikke imøtekommes.
De har derfor nedlagt arbeidet.
Stillingen for tømmerlunnen ved Funnefoss-Sæterstøa er i alt vesentlig uforandret. Det arbeidet fløtermannskapet kan gjøre nederst i tømmersetten monner tilsynelatende lite mot de mengder av tømmer Glåma har tilført siden vi omtalte forholdene.
Allerede lørdag kveld stod nemlig tømmeret ca. 20-30 meter ovenfor sundstedet ved Sæterstøa og i går morges gikk tømmerlunnen ca. 200 meter ovenfor sundstedet.
I løpet av lørdag natt lyktes det fløterne og varpen å fjerne omkring 50 meter av tømmersetten nederst, så situasjonen er foreløpig den at det kommer like mye tømmer til som det lykkes å få løsnet. Hele tømmersetten har nu en lengde av vel 2 kilometer, men øverst er den selvsagt ikke så mangedobbelt som ved Sandakergårdene hvor setten er optil 6 meter tykk.
Efter hvad vårt Skarnes-kontor bringer i erfaring kommer der stadig flere fløtermannskaper dit ned. Lørdag kom således 21 Flisa-fløtere, som straks gjorde seg bemerket ved sitt beregnende og gode arbeide, og siden er der kommet fler fra Flisa. Men forholdet er også det at det er mange uøvede mannskaper på stedet og der er brutt ut almindelig misnøie over at fløterne skal ha samme betaling, nemlig 1,25 for timen, som de øvede fløtere. Særlig har fløterne fra Fetsund vært misfornøid over dette forhold, og krevet samme timebetaling som de har hatt ved Fetsund lenser, nemlig 1,70 for timen. Da fløtervesenet ikke gikk med på dette krav, nedla de arbeidet og reiste hjem lørdag kveld. Imidlertid mangler der ikke mannskap, idet der er trukket sammen alle mobile fløtere fra Odalsvassdraget og Solørbygdene. Der arbeidet søndag eftermiddag ca. 150 fløtere der nede, og siden man begynte det tilsynelatende håpløse arbeide med å lage en åpning i lensen har man arbeidet sig ca. 300 meter opover.
Vårt Skarnes-kontor vekslet igår kveld noen ord med fløtningsinspektør Greni om stillingen.
Jeg ser adskillig lysere på situasjonen nu, sa han. Vi er kommet godt på tur, idet vi har banet oss n «gate» i setten av ca. 300 meters lengde siden vi optok kampen med virvaret. Vi har nu en sterk varpebåt i arbeide og sammen med fløterne blir der gjort et godt arbeide. Så langvarig en affære som i 1918 skal det ikke bli denne gangen.
Ved nyhetsutsendingen i Kringkastingen lørdag uttalte De at arbeidet skal la sig undagjøre i løpet av 8 dager …?
Ja, efter min mening skal vi ha kommet langt på 8 dager, hvis alt går bra. D. v. s. der blir jo liggende igjen tømmer på begge sider av elven, men får vi først banet en renne gjennem hele setten, er slaget vunnet. Og det går bra nu.
Er det mannskap nok?
Ja, til å arbeide i den smale tømmerrennen er det mer enn nok.
Er det slik at fløterne fra Fetsund har sluttet på grunn av misnøie over timebetalingen?
Ja, det vil si det er en del som har reist hjem fordi de hadde noe å gjøre der nede.
Så vidt herr Greni. Tømmergangen i Glåma har nu minket betraktelig efter at forbudet mot utislag blev gitt. Ved Knutsrud i Fulufjorden er der spent en lense som stanser tilgangen ovenfra. Men også her kommer der tross dette en del tømmer igjennem. Imidlertid må man vel nu regne med at setten ikke kan vokse så særlig ovenfor Sæterstøa. Fløtningsdirektør Johannesen er således stadig på farten i vassdraget ovenfor og ser og kontrollerer forholdene.
Kunde setten vært undgått?
Vi undlater ikke i denne forbindelse å sette fingeren op hvad en erfaren og stedskjent mann igår fortalte oss om fløtningen ved Funnefoss. Det tyder nemlig på at fløtningsvesenet allerede 17. mai begikk en fadese som ser ut til å bli kostbar.
Ved Funnefoss er der spent en såkalt «direksjonslense» over Glåma, bare med en renne i midten hvor man lenser tømmeret ut. Her arbeidet bare 6 mann om morgenen 17. mai da tømmeret begynte å sette sig.
Ordren skulde ha vært, mener vår hjemmelsmann, at så snart man var klar over stillingens håpløshet, skulde lensen vært kappet. Den røk av sig selv lenger ut på dagen, men da hadde allerede tømmeret festnet sig så godt at det var håpløst med det mannskap man kunde sette på 17. mai å få gjort noe større.
Dette høres jo meget rimelig ut, og det er sikkert så sant som det er sagt, men til undskyldning må også sies at det er alltid lettes å være klok efterpå.
Risikerer man nu at tømmeret blir sittende fast der nede en måneds tid eller to, kan man sikkert regne med at søkketømmerprosenten av tømmeret blir uhyggelig og at der av tømmeret som hele tiden ligger under vann ikke engang holder sig flytende til Årnes. Bra vilde det jo være om det ikke gikk slik, men risikoen er der.
Der skal, efter hvad en sakkyndig sier til oss, ligge tømmer i lunnen for minst 10 millioner kroner.
Det viser sig at forbudet mot utislag ikke blir respektert. En av våre medarbeidere konstaterte således at utislag foregikk for full damp ved Rustadmoen i Vinger lørdag ettermiddag.»
Tirsdag 24. mai kunne endelig Kongsvinger Arbeider blad bringe ei gladmelding fra Funnefossen:
«Flere tusen stokker løsnet i går ved Funnefoss.
Og ingen skade skjedde på kraftstastjonen.
Men det er fremdeles veldige mengder tømmer igjen i setten.
Ved henvendelse til Funnefoss kraftstasjon igår klokken syv fikk vi den opmuntrende melding at flere tusen stokker løsnet i setten igår eftermiddag litt over klokken fem og fulgte fossestrykene nedover uten at noe uhell skjedde. Dermed er der allerede gjort et respektabelt arbeide i tømmerlunnen nedentil, men forholdet er fremdeles at setten har vokset en del oventil og ferjen har vært blokeret siden lørdag eftermiddag. Der har vært brukt båt til sundingen.
Noen nærmere oplysninger kunde man ikke gi i Funnefoss kraftstasjon, og Greni lyktes det ikke å få i tale. Vi forsøkte derimot å treffe ingeniør Kittelsen, men fikk en dame i tale i stedet som gav den oplysning at der er absolutt ikke gjort noen ting – forholdene er de samme!»
Det kan jo ikke holde stikk. Det er omtrent umulig å få folk i tale som har greie på situasjonen, da omtrent alle mennesker tilbringer dagen nede på elvekanten og ser på.»
Fredag 27. mai meldte Kongsvinger Arbeiderblad følgende:
«Nu går det unda ved Funnefoss!
Fløtningsinspektør Greni mener å være gjennem setten i kveld.
Det gjenstår ca. 800 meter tømmer, som ikke sitter fast i bunnen.
60 fløtere permittert, men der arbeider fremdeles over 100 mann.
Efter mye strev lyktes det oss endelig like før telefonens stengning igår å få fatt i fløtningsinspektør Greni for å få rede på situasjonen ved Funnefoss. Og situasjonen ved Funnefoss var riktig lys i går kveld. Greni regnet med at man skal ha slått sig igjennem setten fredag kveld.
Glåma kunde sannsynligvis ikke bli helt ren for tømmer der nede da, men han regnet ihvertfall med at der kunde settes på tømmer ovenfra uten risiko idet det jo gjelder å få fløtt vekk tømmer ovenfra også nu da Glåma viser stigning nord i fylket igjen. Det gjelder jo å nytte ut flommen til å få de veldige tømmermasser frem i vassdraget. Det er store ting som står på spill og det er sikkert grunn til å tro at fløtervesenet har gått med skjelv i knea i den siste tiden, da det så ut til å bli en langvarig affære med å greie op i floken ved Funnefoss.
Herr Greni var riktig fornøid. Varpebåten og fløterne har gjort et strålende arbeide og det gjenstår nu bare 800 meter tømmermasse. Men man er kommet helt gjennom den hårde setten og arbeider nu med tømmer som ikke sitter fast i bunnen. Da er vi helt ovenpå, sier Greni, og resten skal gå som en lek.
Arbeider der mange fløtere der nede nu?
Å ja, vel 100 mann, men vi permitterte 60 lørdag kveld.
Det har vel vært et enerverende og anstrengende arbeide?
Ja, gud bevars. Nui da De ringte var jeg langt ute på elva om bord i varpebåten. Jeg trodde det var riks fra Oslo og reiste i land, men hadde jeg visst det bare var Dere, så jadden hadde jeg blitt der ute! sier Greni spøkende.
Akk ja, det er ofte slik at bladfolk er brysomme, men de er det så menn ikke av privat fornøielse. I så måte sier vi med en impulsiv pressemann som en gang drog en gretten byfogd op av middagsluren og frem til telefonen og i den anledning fikk en fæl skyllebøtte over sig: Jeg skal si Dem en ting jeg, byfogd: Vi pressefolk må forstyrre selv statsråder i nattesøvnen!
Nu ja, dette var spøk.
Fløtningsinspektør Åsnes forteller oss efter et besøk der nede onsdag kveld at det gikk strålende unda. Der gikk optil 30-40 tylfter om gangen uavlatelig, og så vel fløtningsdirektør Johannesen som Greni var strålende fornøid. Man var kommet gjennom den kompakte masse som stod på bunnen og inn i tømmerlunnen som det var lettere å arbeide i. Setten står fremdeles 400 meter ovenfor sundstedet og 400 meter nedenfor, men det er som sagt tømmer man kan komme noen vei med.
Som meddelt er Glåmas løp ved Flisa sperret med lenser for å hindre at tømmersetten ved Seterstøa skal ta overhånd. Vår medarbeider tok i går et overblikk over situasjonen og anslår tømmerbommens lengde til 6 km. og elvens bredde her til 40-50 meter. Det er nu antydninger til sammenstuing på enkelte steder.»
SubjectSammenstuvet tømmer som fylte hele elveløpet mellom Funnefossen og fergestedet Sæterstøa i Nes kommune i Akershus fra 17. mai 1938 og noen dager framover. På dette tidpunktet var det så mye tett sammenstuvet tømmer at det var mulig å gå tørrskodd tvers over det brede elveløpet. Trykket i tømmerhaugen var så stort at en del av stokkene ble presset opp i stående stilling. Tømmermengdene ble naturligvis altfor store for det lokale fløterlaget, som måtte suppleres med ekstramannskaper. Etter hvert var det 60-70 mann som angrep tømmeret, de fleste fra den nedre sida av haugen, men på dette fotografiet ser vi også noen midt ute på tømmerhaugen. Fløtingsinspektøren rekvirerte vinsj i håp om å få trukket løs tømmeret - se avisreportasje under fanen «Opplysninger».
Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med notatblokk, lydbandopptaker og kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten tømmertransport til vanns hadde vært. En del installasjoner i og ved elver og innsjøer måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noen eiendommer og kulturminner ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum etter at fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte en del av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert.
Other informationJohs. Johannesen ble født i Oslo 16. mai 1877. Han tok artium i 1895, og tre år seinere ble han uteksaminert som bygningsingeniør fra Kristiania tekniske skole. Deretter var han ansatt ved Gleim og Eyde i Lübeck, seinere ved Eydes ingeniørkontor i Kristiania. I perioden 1900-01 studerte han ved den tekniske høgskolen i Dresden. I 1902 ble han fløtingsinspektør i Glomma-vassdraget, og fire år seinere ble han utnevnt til direktør i Christiania Tømmerdirektion, seinere kalt Glomma Fellesfløtingsforening. Denne stillingen hadde han fram til våren 1948, da han nådde aldersgrensen. Johannesen var ofte medlem av ulike tekniske kommisjoner, både i og utenfor fløtingsvesenet. Han skal blant annet ha høstet anerkjennelse for den innsatsen han gjorde i grenseforhandlinger med Russland. Johannesen var medlem av hovedstyret i Norsk Ingeniørforening fra 1925 til 1933, og i de tre siste åra av denne perioden var han styreleder med tittelen "president". Johs.
