Arbeidet med utstillingsprosjektet «Det fantastiske treet» foregikk i to faser. Høsten 2014 ble den tidligere utstillingen som hadde stått i atriet som skal huse «treet» demontert, og det ble utført bygningsmessige tilpasninger ved flytting av inngangssone (veggarbeid) og skifting av golv. Vinteren og våren 2015 ble trappa i atriet skjermet, limtregalleriene i rommet ble innsatt og bygginga av «treet» omkring en stålkjerne startet. Museet var åpent som ellers mens dette arbeidet foregikk. Det sto en sperrebukk i døråpningen til atriet, men alle kunne se inn. Noen av materialene som skulle brukes, blant annet åtte meter lange kabelkasser og en del limtreelementer, lå lagret på golvet i sonen framfor atriet. For å orientere publikum om bakgrunnen for at museet framsto slik, ble det våren 2015 oppsatt en plakat med følgende forklarende tekst om prosjektet:
«Verdens største tre i ny utstilling.
I museets nye utstilling «Det fantastiske treet» konstruerer vi verdens største tre i aluminium. Det skal være med i formidlingen av fotosyntesen.
Debatten om klimaendringer, og skogens betydning i denne sammenheng er både kompleks og sammensatt, og det er behov for kunnskapsformidling av tematikken skog ogu klima. Derfor er Norsk Skogmuseum i gang med å bygge en utstilling som skal skape fascinasjon rundt treets fantastiske egenskaper. De besøkende skal lære om treets liv; hvordan fotosyntesen blir til, karbonkretsløpet, og skogens rolle i klimasammenheng.
Utstillingen skal gi større forståelse og kunnskap, spesielt til unge, om skogens økologiske og samfunnsmessige betydning. Den skal vekke oppmerksomhet, og avansert utstillingsteknikk skal skape opplevelser, vekke nysgjerrighet, og være pedagogisk i sin formidlingsform.
Treet består av aluminiumsrør med fiberoptiske kabler. Det skal få lyseffekter i blader og blomster, som skal åpne og lukke seg ved hjelp av hukommelsesmetall. Dette vil til sammen gjøre at treet kan vise alle de fire årstidene.
Det vil være hektisk aktivitet i byggeperioden, og store elementer skal på plass. Vi beklager at det kan føre til noe støy og rot.»
SubjectFra arbeidet med utstillingsprosjektet «Det fantastiske treet» ved Norsk Skogmuseum våren 2015. Her bygges en ny utstilling, som blant annet skal formidle fotosyntesen og den kompenserende funksjonen trærnes fotosyntese har ved å bremse de negative effektene moderne samfunns intensive bruk av fossil energi har på klimaet. En 7,5 meter høy modell av et tre - bygd på en stålkjerne, men med påviklete fiberoptiske kabler og «hukommelsesmetall» i vitale elementer - blir den sentrale hovedattraksjonen i utstillingen. På dette fotografiet ser vi newzealandske Nick Stevens montere blomster han har lagd av det nevnte hukommelsesmetallet. Disse skal kunne åpne og lukke seg, slik blomster i naturen gjør etter vekslende lydimpulser. Stevens er til daglig er timelærer for designstudentene ved Arkitektur- og designhøgskolen i Oslo.
Dette bildet tok museumsfotograf Bård Løken for å dokumentere en av de mest aktive fasene i arbeidet med å bygge en tremodell som etter hvert skal brukes til formidling av fotosyntesen og trærnes biologi ved Norsk Skogmuseum. Fotografiet ble dels tatt med henblikk på markedsføring av utstillingsprosjektet, dels med sikte på å dokumentere noe av det viktigste som skjer i museet i 2015 for ettertida.
