Fra gammelt av lå «Storlensa» i Glommavassdraget like nedenfor Bingsfossen. Derfra og nedover mot innsjøen Øyeren var elva stilletflytene, og det var uproblematisk å ta seg fram med båt. Lenge tilhørte Storlensa ved Bingen grunneierne i området, som belastet tømmerhandlerne som fikk sortert tømmeret sitt her med avgifter. I 1811 ble anlegget kjøpt av Det Ankerske Fideikomis - et selskap som var tuftet på verdiene i dødsboet etter trelasthandler Bernt Anker. I 1826 fikk trelasthandlerne som opererte i vassdraget skjøte på lensene. De organiserte sortering av tømmeret fra de store skogsområdene ved den nordre delen av vassdraget ved Bingen. På denne tida var lenseanlegget ved Bingen ganske komplekst. I et skrift fra 1828 beskrives det slik:
«Naar Tømmeret om Sommeren og især i Flomtiden kommer nedad Elven, optages en del af Bergslænsen samt ved Høels- eller Foslænserne, for at Hovedlændsen ei skal overlæsses. Den Del derimod, som gaar ud Elven, stanses ved sidste Lænse. Saasnart denne faar mere Tømmer, end man tror, den kan modtage uden at briste, afstikkes det til de nedenforliggende Rebaklænsen og Sprænglænserne samt til Vestby-, Lystad- og Rømulænserne. Paa alle disse Steder og ved Hovedlænsen selv sorteres eller, som det kaldes, flakes Tømmeret efter Merkerne. En sorteret Rad, bestaaende av 5 Tylvter ved Siden av hverandre lagte Tømmerstokke, kaldes en Slipperad, og denne hænges i en Slake eller Sammenbindingslænse, som findes ved hver Tømmerlænse. Flake- eller Flødningsbinderen sammenføier gjerne 3 Slipperader efter hverandre, og disse kaldes nu en Bas. Er flere slike Baser færdige, løses de hver for sig fra Slakelænsen og føres længere ud i Elven, hvor de ved Stranden, med Grundeierens Tilladelse og mod Betaling, sammenbindes paa den Maade, at 5 Tylvter bliver i Bredden og 20 Stykker i Længden. Nu kaldes samlingen et Tømmerhundrede og transporteres saaledes til Sagbrugene ved Vahl, længere ned i Elven, til Gahnsbrugene og de øvrige Sagbrug i Øieren samt til Strømmen. Derimod gaar man gjerne med 150 eller 300 Tylter ad Gangen af det Tømmer, som skal [overe Øyeren og] gjennem Mørkfossen. …»
Da myndighetene i 1850-åra begynte å prosjektere en jernbane som skulle gå østover fra hovedstaden, «Kongsvingerbanen», med bru over elva ved Fetsund litt lengre nede i vassdraget, forsto kjøpmennene i Christiania Tømmerdirektion at det kunne bli problematisk å få tømmer i bommer eller bunter forbi brustedet. Derfor kjøpte de eiendommen Lund nedenfor jernbanebrua på Fetsund og en del tilstøtende strandarealer. Fra og med 1861 foregikk sorteringsarbeidet der. Man beholdt likevel anlegget på Bingen som attholds- eller beholdningslense, hvor man «stakk ut» passende tømmermengder hver dag, som fikk flyte stille ned mot sorteringslensene på Fetsund. Der ble tømmer som skulle til sagbrukene på Lillestrøm og langs Øyeren sortert fra det som skulle til kjøpere lengre sør med sikte på båtsleping til de nevnte sagbruksmiljøene eller til elveløpet ovenfor Mørkfossen. I år med stor tømmeromsetning kunne svært store mengder tømmer i perioder bli liggende ved attholds- eller beholdningslensa ved Bingen i påvente av sortering ved Fetsund.
Tømmeropphopning ved Bingen i Sørum, Akershus, våren 1916. Ved Bingen var det ei kraftig attholdslense. Fotografiet er tatt fra elvebakken på østsida av elva mot et bredt, stilleflytende parti av elva, der det hadde hopet seg opp store mengder barket fløtingsvirke. Nærmest opptaksstedet lå virket noenlunde plant og regelmessig i vannskorpa, men lengre ute i elveløpet var trykket åpenbart så stort at en del stokker hadde reist seg i mer vertikale stillinger. På bakkekammen i bakgrunnen skimtes et kulturlandskap med jorder, enkelte skogstriper og et par gardstun.
Dette fotografiet skal være tatt i 1916, som var en spesiell fløtingssesong. I den øvre delen av vassdraget var vårflommen uvanlig stor, så stor at mange ikke kunne minnes å ha sett maken. Det hadde ikke vært mer vatn i elva siden 1850. Lengre nede i vassdraget var 1916-flommen mer moderat, men likevel stor. Mye vatn og kraftig strøm - kombinert med store virkesmengder i vassdraget som en følge av høye tømmerpriser - skapte utfordringer for aktørene i fløtinga. Heldigvis tålte attholdslensa ved Bingen i Sørum påkjenningen, men trykket fra strømmen i vannet og bakenforliggende tømmermasser presset store mengder tømmerstokker over lensestengselet, slik at det fløt videre nedover mot Fetsund, der det ble liggende og presse mot brua for Kongsvingerbanen (jfr. f. eks. SJF.1989-02565 - SJF.1989-02571). Heldigvis tålte brua påkjenningene, men engen følte seg sikre på at den ville tåle neste storflom. Dette var hovedårsaken til at det ble bygd ny bru - høyere over vannspeilet på elva - i 1918.

Dette fotografiet er fra samlinga etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening og forløperne, Christiania Tømmerdirektion (Øvre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening) og Fredrikstad Tømmerdirektion (Nedre Glommens fællesfløtningsforening). Da det ble klart at det gikk mot avvikling av fløtinga i Glommavassdraget i midten av 1980-åra initierte Norsk Skogbruksmuseum noe som ble kalt «Prosjekt Glomma». Museet satte historikeren Øivind Vestheim og fotografen OT Ljøstad til å følge fløtinga i vassdraget med kamera de siste to fløtingssesongene, mens museumsdirektør Tore Fossum samarbeidet med administrasjonen og styret i Glomma fellesfløtingsforening om best mulig ivaretakelse av levningene etter den viktige aktiviteten fløtinga hadde vært. En del installasjoner i vassdrag måtte imidlertid fjernes, slik vassdragslovgivningen forutsatte. Mange husvære ble overdratt til grunneiere for en rimelig pris, og noe ble overlatt til aktører som ville drive formidling av vassdrags- og fløtingshistorie. Arkivene etter virksomheten ble overdratt til Riksarkivet, som valgte å la det bli liggende i en av kontorbygningene ved Fetsund lenser. Ordning av dette materialet ble påbegynt under ledelse av Øivind Vestheim. Etter at det ble etablert et museum ved Fetsund lenser i 1990 har personale derfra hatt det daglige forvaltningsansvaret for protokoll- og dokumentarkivet etter Glomma fellesfløtingsforening. Fotomaterialet etter organisasjonen ble overlatt til Norsk Skogbruksmuseum da fløtinga opphørte. Det besto av 72 album, samt en del «løse» kopier og negativer. OT Ljøstad reproduserte en del av motivene ved hjelp av mellomformatkamera med negativ svart-hvitt-film. Materialet ble også enkelt registrert, i første omgang med stikkord (ofte stedsnavn og opptaksdatoer) som var skrevet inn i albumene. Skanning og fyldigere registrering tas innimellom andre oppgaver, og ettersom samlinga er stor, vil det ta lang tid før dette arbeidet er fullført. Norsk Skogbruksmuseum publiserte i 1998 Øivind Vestheims bok «Fløtning gjennom århundrer» hvor mye av materialet fra «Prosjekt Glomma» og fotografier fra Glomma fellesfløtingsforenings arkiv ble presentert. I 2012 utgav Fetsund lenser/Akershusmuseet ei bok med tittelen «Stemmer fra elva», med Thomas Støvind Berg som hovedforfatter. Denne publikasjonen presenterer mye materiale fra miljøet rundt lensestedet Fetsund.
