Fotografen Anders Beer Wilse var fast engasjert på turistskipene nordover i perioden 1905-1913.

D/S «Neptun» var et passasjer- og hurtigruteskip som ble overlevert Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab (BDS) i juni 1890. Skipet var bygget ved Joh. C. Tecklenburg i Geestemünde, Tyskland. Hun var søsterskip til Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskabs (NFDS) DS «Kong Harald», som ble bygd ved samme verftet.
D/S «Neptun» gikk i rute mellom Hamburg og Finnmark om vinteren, og i turisttrafikk langs norskekysten om sommeren. I 1919 ble skipet satt inn i fast rotasjon i hurtigruten, men ble trukket ut igjen i 1921. Etter dette gikk hun i rute mellom Hamburg og Bergen frem til 1928, da hun ble solgt til Stavanger for opphugging.
Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab hadde som tradisjon å navngi skipene sine etter fenomener og objekter på nattehimmelen. Neptun er den ytterste planeten i vårt solsystem.
