I 1863 kjøpte Truels Madssen Wiel i handelshuset Wiel & Co. i Fredrikshald (Halden) den militære embetsgarden Søndre Torp i Borge, med sikte på å ekspandere firmaets trelastproduksjon med ei dampsag ved Glomma, like ovenfor Fredrikstad. Denne byen var med Glomma som transportåre for tømmerråstoffet og med dampmaskiner som drivkraft for sagbrukene i ferd med å bli Norges viktigste produksjonssenter for trelast. Wiel-familien kjøpte også en del mindre, tilstøtende eiendommer på begge sider av Glomma, for å sikre seg tomtearealer og strandrettigheter til å bygge et dampsagbruk med gode landingsmuligheter for fløtingstømmer. Bruket, som lokalt ble kalt «Wiel-saga», fikk også egen høvleriavdeling. I 1895 overtok ei gruppe trelasthandlere i Fredrikstad denne bedriften med tomter, produksjonslokaler og arbeider- og funksjonærboliger for til sammen 100 000 kroner. Dermed skiftet selskapet etter hvert navnt til «Torp Brug». Den største aktøren i det nye driftsselskapet var firmaet And. H. Kiær & Co. Ltd. Det var lederen i dette selskapet, Elias Kiær, som etter noen år med sagbruksdrift på Torp tok initiativ for å supplere den trelastproduksjonen familieselskapet allerede hadde i Fredrikstad-regionen med en papirfabrikk. Den endelige beslutningen om dette ble tatt i 1907. Fra da av tok det om lag tre år å bygge fabrikken, som etter planen skulle få en årsproduksjon på om lag 6 000 tonn kraftpapir i året, fordelt på tre papirmaskiner, en yankeemodell og to fourdriniermaskiner. Fabrikken gikk godt i startfasen. Tømmerråstoffet var billig, og fabrikken lå gunstig til ved den nederste delen av Norges betydeligste fløtingsvassdrag, der And. H. Kiær & Co. Ltd. også fikk transportert virke fra egne eiendommer i skogbygdene oppover i Solør og Østerdalen. Alt i 1912 vedtok styret i driftsselskapet at Torp Brug skulle utvides, slik at anlegget fikk en driftskapasitet på 10 000 tonn kraftpapir i året. Det store krakket som inntraff etter 1. verdenskrig - i 1920-21 - førte imdlertid til problemer, både ved at markedet for produktene utviklet seg negativt, og ved at et par av de aktørene som hadde investert i Torp Brug sammen med And. H. Kiær & Co. Ltd. gikk konkurs. Dermed ble kreditorene, i første instans Fredrikstad Privatbank, seinere Norges Bank, aktører i den strategiske ledelsen. Til tross for de dårlige tidene, ble det faktisk investert i mer teknisk utstyr og større produksjonskapasitet. Utbyttet ble imidlertid ikke som forventet, og i 1926 overtok And. H. Kiær & Co. Ltd. praktisk talt alle eierinteressene i Torp Brug. Under ledelse av den dyktige ingeniøren Kristoffer Mørch ble det investert i et blekeri, som gjorde Torp Brug istand til å levere kvitt kraftpapir, et produkt bedriften ble spesielt kjent for. Fabrikken produserte også hartsfolje og terpentin. Men hovedproduktet var stadig kraftpapir, og i 1930-åra nådde årsproduksjonen bortimot 20 000 tonn. I begynnelsen av 1950-åra sysselsatte Torp Brug om lag 350 arbeidere. I 1954 ble bedriften åsted for en arbeidskonflikt som ble både hard og langvarig, blant annet fordi bedriftsledelsen sa opp en fagforeningsleder, noe som provoserte fagorganiserte i hele det norske industrimiljøet. Streiken inntraff midt i en moderniseringsperiode på Torp Brug. Etter 2. verdenskrig investerte Kiær-familien i modernisering av fabrikkanlegget på Torp med sikte på å heve produksjonskapasiteten. Det ble reist nytt blekeri og nytt kokeri i 1950. Fire år seinere sto en ny verksted- og lagerbygning ferdig, og i den var det innredet sanitæranlegg for arbeiderne. Et nytt sodahus var også under bygging. I 1955-56 fortsatte moderniseringa med bygging av et nytt, stort lutkokeri, flissilo, kontinuerlig mikseri og en ny papirsal, hvor det ble plassert en stor Yankee-maskin. Dermed kunne årsproduksjonen økes til 30 - 35 000 tonn kraftpapir, om lag det dobbelte av hva den hadde vært ti år tidligere, og bemanninga økte til bortimot 500 ansatte. De store moderniseringsarbeidene hadde imidlertid tæret hardt på reservene i eierselskapet And. H. Kiær & Co. I 1957 inngikk dette selskapet et industrielt samarbeid med den store treforedlingsbedriften A/S Borregaard i Sarpsborg, og i 1961 overtok A/S Borregaard 77 prosent av aksjene i Kiær-selskapet. Borregaard satset ikke på modernisering og videreutvikling av virksomheten på Torp. I 1972 ble det bestemt at produksjonen der skulle stanses. Dette rammet 350 arbeidere, men mange av dem fikk fortsette som papirarbeidere ved Borregaards hovedanlegg eller i emballasjeproduksjonen ved Glomma Papp i Sarpsborg. Fabrikkbygningene på Torp ble etter dette stående tomme i mange år, før de ble jevnet med jorda.

Bildet er tatt fra forholdsvis stor høyde, rett ned mot det underliggende landskapet. Dersom bildet holdes med sørsida ned og nordsida opp, ser vi Glomma i vest, mot venstre bildekant. På vestsida av elva ser vi takene og bordtomtene på Hauge Bruk,som lå i Rolvsøy kommune, og vi ser også noe av småhusbebyggelsen der mange av arbeiderfamiliene som var knyttet til Hauge Bruk bodde. Ettersom bordtomtene ved denne trelastbedriften var tomme, er det sannsynlig at fotografiet ble tatt etter at virksomheten var avviklet. På østsida av Glomma, rett over for Hauge Bruk, ser vi ned på fabrikkbygningene og de omliggende tomtearealene til Torp Brug, som var en treforedlingsbedrift med kraftpapir som hovedprodukt. Kalkdeponiene på den søndre delen av arealet skiller seg ut med sine lyse overflater. I elveløpet skimter vi en del tømmer som var innlenset ved elvebredden, slik at det kunne tas inn på sagbruket hvor stokkene ble kappet i høvelige kubblengder for flishogging og derpå følgende cellulosekoking og papirproduksjon. Torp Brug var bygd på jordbrukseiendommen Søndre Torps grunn, og mye av åkerjorda var fortsatt ubebygd da dette fotografiet ble tatt. Sørøst for fabrikken var det en liten furuskog, som delvis var pleiet som parkområde, og sør for denne grønne lunga skimter vi takene på de flotte murvillaene som var bygd for funksjonærer som var sentrale i fabrikkledelsen. Mange av fabrikkarbeiderfamiliene bodde på Torpeberget, en grunnlendt granittrygg nord og øst for fabrikken. Her var det også skole, forsamlingslokale, meieri og forretninger. Mellom fabrikkanlegget og riksveg 111, som går nord-sør i dette bildet, ser vi fotballbanen til Torp Idrætsforening.

Dette fotografiet ble funnet i Norsk Skogmuseums arkiv som en cirka 23 X 23 centimeters papirkopi. Baksida av denne kopien er stemplet «Widerøe's flyveselskap A/S».
Fjellanger Widerøe har drevet med flyfotografering siden ca. 1935. I 1934 og 1936 slo Helge Skappel og broren Vilhelm S. seg sammmen med brødrene Viggo og Arild Widerøe og dannet et felles flyselskap, Widerøe's Flyveselskap a/s.

FW AS leverer idag flybilder fra hele Norge. På firmaet på Fornebu valgte man å selge ut Skråfotoarkivet til alle landets kommuner. Salget foregikk over en periode på over ti år. Noen få kommuner valgte å ikke kjøpe bildene, disse finnes fremdeles i firmaet i dag. I etterkant har firmaet kjøpt opp flere andre flyfotoarkiv, i tillegg til å bygge opp Fjellanger-Widerøe-arkivet.
